Wood, with its constituent building block cellulose, is by far the most common biomaterial on the planet and has been the most important material used by humans to establish civilization. If there is one single biomaterial that should be studied and used by materials scientists across disciplines to achieve a sustainable future, it is cellulose. This perspective provides insights for the general materials science community about the unique properties of wood and cellulose and how they may be used in advanced sustainable materials to make a substantial societal impact.

Introduction: In the United States, maternal mortality is high and patterned by race and socioeconomic status (SES). Patient-provider relationships and societal discrimination have been separately associated with poor maternal outcomes, but it is not clear how such mechanisms may be interrelated. Thus, the present study investigates how societal experiences of discrimination are associated with and manifest in patient-provider relationship quality among perinatal women.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on restoring sensory function after the removal of the inferior alveolar nerve during cancer surgery, which can lead to significant issues with speech, saliva control, and eating.
  • Researchers simulated a surgical technique to reconstruct the mental nerve using a branch from the opposite side, analyzing anatomical aspects and nerve connections in cadavers.
  • Results showed a feasible approach with minimal nerve gap and successful connections, possibly improving patients' quality of life through quicker recovery and less donor site damage.

The aim of the creation of this cohort was to investigate patterns of health and health care utilisation before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, overall and in relation to specific diagnoses, among people with intellectual disabilities (ID) compared to the general population. People living in Skåne, the southernmost region of Sweden, on 1st of January 2014 with at least one diagnosis of ID (ICD-10 codes F70-F79) or Down syndrome (DS; Q90), or support and/or services according to the LSS act comprised the ID cohort (n = 14 716). People living in the same family and/or household as a person in the ID cohort constituted the ID family cohort (n = 31 688), and those remaining comprised the general population cohort (gPop; n = 1 226 955).

Clinical applications of CAR-T cells are limited by the scarcity of tumor-specific targets and are often afflicted with the same on-target/off-tumor toxicities that plague other cancer treatments. A new promising strategy to enforce tumor selectivity is the use of logic-gated, two-receptor systems. One well-described application is termed Tmod™, which originally utilized a blocking inhibitory receptor directed towards HLA-I target antigens to create a protective NOT gate.

Ileal conduit (IC) is the most performed urinary diversion after radical cystectomy (RC) for urothelial carcinoma (UC) of the bladder. While UC recurrence after RC is well-described, recurrence of UC within a urinary diversion is much less prevalent, and thus, management of these lesions is not well understood. Here, we report the case of a 59-year-old male with a history of invasive UC with glandular differentiation of the urinary bladder who had carcinoma in situ recurrence after induction, intravesical Bacille Calmette-Guerin therapy.

Sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (sCJD), the most common human prion disease, is thought to occur when the cellular prion protein (PrP) spontaneously misfolds and assembles into prion fibrils, culminating in fatal neurodegeneration. In a genome-wide association study of sCJD, we recently identified risk variants in and around the gene STX6, with evidence to suggest a causal increase of STX6 expression in disease-relevant brain regions. STX6 encodes syntaxin-6, a SNARE protein primarily involved in early endosome to trans-Golgi network retrograde transport.
