Objective: To identify the COVID-19 pandemic impact on well-being/mental health, coping strategies, and risk factors in adolescents worldwide.

Method: This study was based on an anonymous online multi-national/multi-language survey in the general population (representative/weighted non-representative samples, 14-17 years of age), measuring change in well-being (World Health Organization-Five Well-Being Index [WHO-5]/range = 0-100) and psychopathology (validated composite P-score/range = 0-100), WHO-5 <50 and <29, pre- vs during COVID-19 pandemic (April 26, 2020-June 26, 2022). Coping strategies and 9 a priori- defined individual/cumulative risk factors were measured.

In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in developing and using artificial intelligence (AI) models in pathology. Although pathologists generally have a positive attitude toward AI, they report a lack of knowledge and skills regarding how to use it in practice. Furthermore, it remains unclear what skills pathologists would require to use AI adequately and responsibly.

In Denmark, approximately 5% of new mothers experience postpartum depression, potentially hindering a child's care and stimulation for ideal social-emotional development. This literary review explores the impact of maternal postpartum depression on a child's social-emotional development and confirms that maternal postpartum depression potentially harms the child's social-emotional development. Nevertheless, there is cause for optimism in the literature, suggesting that the impact on the child is likely to be transient in cases of shorter durations of postpartum depression.

There is an increasing understanding that condensation is a crucial intermediate step in the assembly of biological materials and for a multitude of cellular processes. To apply and to understand these mechanisms, biophysical characterisation techniques are central. The formation and biophysical properties of protein condensates depend on a multitude of factors, such as protein concentration, pH, temperature, salt concentration, and presence of other biomolecules as well as protein purification and storage conditions.

Article Synopsis
  • This study focused on training a deep learning model to help doctors identify important areas in breast cancer patients that need treatment.
  • It used expert opinions from radiotherapy centers in Denmark to create high-quality data for training the model.
  • The results showed that the model's performance was very similar to what experienced doctors would achieve, which means it could be used safely in real medical situations.

  • The COH-FIT study is a large, multi-country survey aimed at identifying factors affecting wellbeing and mental health outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic, involving a representative sample of 121,066 adults.
  • Researchers analyzed both modifiable (like coping strategies and pre-pandemic stress) and non-modifiable factors (such as age, gender, and socioeconomic status), finding significant negative effects on wellbeing and psychopathology scores during the pandemic.
  • The study identified 15 modifiable and 9 non-modifiable risk factors, alongside 13 modifiable and 3 non-modifiable protective factors, emphasizing the importance of social support and coping strategies in mental health outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • There is a lack of comprehensive international studies examining multidimensional mental health and wellbeing before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly identifying at-risk groups and effective coping strategies.
  • The COH-FIT survey, conducted from April 2020 to June 2022 in 30 languages, assessed changes in well-being and psychopathology among over 121,000 participants, revealing significant declines in mental health during the pandemic.
  • Key findings indicated that certain demographics, such as young adults and people in low-income countries, were particularly affected, while coping strategies like exercise, internet use, and maintaining social contacts emerged as the most effective for managing stress.

Background: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) has a negative impact on health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) is the treatment of choice for those not responding to medical treatments. To date, the short-term effects of FESS on HRQoL are still unclear.

In the medical literature, promising results regarding accuracy of medical AI are presented as claims for its potential to increase efficiency. This elision of concepts is misleading and incorrect. First, the promise that AI will reduce human workload rests on a too narrow assessment of what constitutes workload in the first place.

Objectives: The Sino-Nasal Outcome Test 22 (SNOT-22) is a validated patient-reported outcome instrument to evaluate the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). There are no published normative SNOT-22 scores, limiting its interpretation.

Methods: Symptom scores from 1,000 SNOT-22 questionnaires were analysed by principal component analysis (PCA) and exploratory factor analyses.

Article Synopsis
  • HPV vaccination in Germany has effectively reduced the prevalence of HPV types 16 and 18 among women aged 20-25, showcasing a drop from 22.5% to 10.3% in unvaccinated participants from 2010-2012 to 2018-2019.
  • Among the studied population, the overall vaccination rate was 62%, with a vaccine effectiveness of approximately 46.4% against HPV16/18 infections.
  • The study involved a random selection of geographical clusters and health data collection from over 7,800 women, reflecting a significant advancement in public health through vaccination initiatives.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic is characterized by rapid increases in infection burden owing to the emergence of new variants with higher transmissibility and immune escape. To date, monitoring the COVID-19 pandemic has mainly relied on passive surveillance, yielding biased epidemiological measures owing to the disproportionate number of undetected asymptomatic cases. Active surveillance could provide accurate estimates of the true prevalence to forecast the evolution of the pandemic, enabling evidence-based decision-making.

For many patients and their treating clinicians, the pharmacological management of psychotic symptoms centres on trying to find a regime that balances efficacy and quality of life-impairing side effects associated with dopamine antagonism. Recent reports of a positive Phase III study from Karuna Therapeutics indicate that the first primarily non-dopamine-based treatment for schizophrenia may come to market soon with the potential for substantially reduced or differentiated side effects. Against a background of repeated failures, Karuna's success promises a desperately needed new treatment option for patients.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the intra- and postoperative complications, especially the risk of visual axis opacification (VAO), following the implantation of the bag-in-the-lens (BIL) intraocular lens (IOL) in infants with congenital cataract operated on before 12 weeks of age.

Methods: Infants operated on before 12 weeks of age between June 2020 and June 2021 with a follow-up longer than 1 year were included in the present retrospective study. This was a first-experience cohort of an experienced paediatric cataract surgeon with this type of lens.

Background: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a heterogeneous disease at the clinical phenotype level (without nasal polyp [CRSsNP] vs with nasal polyp [CRSwNP]) and at the underlying inflammatory endotype level (type 2 vs non-type 2). Whether the endotype is associated with clinical presentation in patients with CRSsNP has yet to be explored in detail.

Objective: To identify associations between endotypes and their clinical significance in patients with CRSsNP based on tissue interleukin-5 levels.

Background: Tonsillectomy (TE) for recurrent tonsillitis (RT) is one of the most common surgical interventions. Since 2015, the indication criteria for TE have become much stricter (German S2k guideline). Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) of short-term quality of life (QoL) after TE have not yet been investigated.

Objective: Parotidectomy worsens quality of life (QoL) in the short-term, but the long-term impact is unknown. In this study, we analysed the long-term effects of parotidectomy on QoL.

Methods: In this prospective long-term follow-up study, participants were divided into three groups: short-term (ST) follow-up of six weeks, long-term (LT) follow-up of 13 years and short- and long-term (SLT) follow-up.

The German National Cohort (NAKO) is an ongoing, prospective multicenter cohort study, which started recruitment in 2014 and includes more than 205,000 women and men aged 19-74 years. The study data will be available to the global research community for analyses. Although the ultimate decision about the analytic methods will be made by the respective investigator, in this paper we provide the basis for a harmonized approach to the statistical analyses in the NAKO.
