Making mentoring more impactful for URiM students.

Mentorship has been proven to be a valuable vehicle to fight the disparity of diverse representation in medicine. Given the numerous findings that a more diverse medical profession leads to better patient outcomes, we believe fostering mentorship of URiM medical students is in the best interest for patients and the field of medicine. In our manuscript, we illustrated tenets of mentorship that result in effective mentoring of URiM students by any physician regardless of race, ethnicity, or background.

Making an Impact with E.M.P.A.C.T. Engage, Mentor Prepare, Advocate, Cultivate, and Teach: An Innovative Pilot Mentoring Program Evaluation for Students Underrepresented in Medicine.

Purpose: Medicine has yet to increase the representation of historically excluded persons in medicine to reflect the general population. The lack of support and guidance in the medical training of these individuals is a significant contributor to this disparity. The Engage, Mentor, Prepare, Advocate for, Cultivate, and Teach (EMPACT) Mentoring program was created to address this problem by providing support for learners who are historically underrepresented in medicine (URiM) as they progress through medical school.

Preliminary Analysis of Unsaturated Fatty Acid Profiles of Coffea arabica L., in Samples with a Denomination of Origin and Speciality of Oaxaca, Mexico.

In February 2020, Coffea arabica L. grown on the coast and in the Southern Sierra Madre of the state of Oaxaca, Mexico obtained the denomination of origin. Which does not have data on color and chemical composition, the first associated with the degree of roasting and the second with lipids (17-18%), as the group of compounds responsible, in part, for flavor, consistency, and may contribute to health benefits.

The Role of B Cell and T Cell Glycosylation in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus.

Glycosylation is a post-translational modification that affects the stability, structure, antigenicity and charge of proteins. In the immune system, glycosylation is involved in the regulation of ligand-receptor interactions, such as in B-cell and T-cell activating receptors. Alterations in glycosylation have been described in several autoimmune diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), in which alterations have been found mainly in the glycosylation of B lymphocytes, T lymphocytes and immunoglobulins.

Nutritional Composition and Bioactive Compounds of Quelites Consumed by Indigenous Communities in the Municipality of Juquila Vijanos, Sierra Norte of Oaxaca, Mexico.

The indigenous communities of Mexico have a long tradition of consuming quelites. In this research, eight species of quelites that are traditionally consumed by indigenous communities of the Sierra Norte of Oaxaca, Mexico, were characterized: Eryngium foetidum L., Galinsoga parviflora Cav.

Gene Participates in the Development of Primary Dyslipidemias.

Dyslipidemias are a group of diseases, which are characterized by abnormal blood concentrations of cholesterol, triglycerides and/or low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-c). Dyslipidemia is a determinant condition for the progress of an atherosclerotic plaque formation. The resulting atherogenicity is due to at least two mechanisms: first, to the accumulation in the plasma of lipid particles that have the capacity to alter the function of the endothelium and deposit at the atheromatous plaque, and second, at an insufficient concentration of multifactorial type of high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-c), whose function is to protect against the development of atherosclerosis.

Effect of mushroom addition on the physicochemical and sensory properties of blue maize tortillas produced with traditional and ecological nixtamalization.

The physicochemical, nutritional and sensory properties of flours, doughs and tortillas made with traditional nixtamalization (TN) and ecological nixtamalization (EN) and enriched (9%) with the traditional maguey mushroom (Pleurotus agaves) were analysed. EN resulted in flours and tortillas having a greater content of bioactive compounds than that of TN flours, which represents a production process of maize tortillas containing high amounts of antioxidants. The addition of mushrooms to EN flours improved their sensory properties, whereas the addition of mushrooms to TN flours decreased them.

Vitis vinifera: An Alternative for the Prevention of Neurodegenerative Diseases.

To present a systematic review of published studies in databases such as PUBMED, REDALYC, SCIELO, DIALNET, SCOPUS, EBSCO and CONRICYT related to the role-played by the components present in the vegetable oil of grape seed (Vitis vinífera) and the prevention or delay in the onset or progression of neurodegenerative diseases. The analysis of the research revealed that neurodegenerative diseases causes alterations in consciousness or in the nervous system leading to severe damage in neuronal cells, these pathologies are considered gradual and progressive. Various syndromes manifest the degenerative diseases of the nervous system; in some of them the predominant symptom is the progressive dementia.

The effect of the presence of seeds on the nutraceutical, sensory and rheological properties of Physalis spp. Fruits jam: A comparative analysis.

Four jams were made using two wild species of Physalis spp., two containing seeds (P1WS and P2WS) and two without seeds (P1WHS and P2WHS). Physicochemical, nutraceutical and rheological properties of the jams were determined and a sensory evaluation made.

[Increasing consumption of dietary fiber complementary to the treatment of metabolic syndrome].

Introduction: the amount of fiber ingested in Latin American countries is lower (10-20 g/d) than recommended (35 g/d). An increase isrecommended for patients with metabolic syndrome (MS) to reduce cardiovascular risk, as well as to prevent obesity and other complications.

Objective: to evaluate whether increased dietary fiber consumption complements MS treatment and improves clinical and laboratory parameters in subjects at the San Martín Mexicapam "La Joya" Health Center, Oaxaca (Mexico).

[Obesity and its respiratory effects detected through levels of partial pressure of carbon dioxide in the supine position].

Introduction: Obesity is a disease that is closely associated with deleterious respiratory effects such as the Obesity Hypoventilation Syndrome which conventionally includes awake hypercapnia. There are studies addressing the detection of daytime hypercapnia with the patient either in sitting or standing position. However, there are no studies in obese subjects with a normal daytime PaCO2 in whom the detection of hypercapnia is made in the supine position.

Sentinel lymph node biopsy for cutaneous melanoma: a 6 years study.

Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the results of sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) in cutaneous melanoma at our institution.

Materials And Methods: 128 patients with primary cutaneous melanoma who underwent SLNB between April, 2004, and August, 2010 were studied. Univariate and multivariate analysis was performed to explore the effect of variables on mortality and sentinel node status.

[Isolation of helicobacter pylori in dental plaque in patients with gastritis at "Angamos" clinic].

Objective: Detect the presence of (Helicobacter pylori) in dental plaque among patients with gastritis diagnosed by biopsy at Angamos Surquillo Hospital.

Type Of Study: Analytical Observation.

Population: 115 patients scheduled for endoscopy at the Gastroenterological Department of said hospital.

Cutaneous sensitivity to six mite species in asthmatic patients from five Latin American countries.

The prevalence of positive skin prick tests to the mite species Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, D. farinae, Blomia tropicalis, Chortoglyphus arcuatus, Lepidoglyphus destructor and Aleuroglyphus ovatus was determined in 297 asthmatic adults and children living in seven cities of five Latin American countries. A standardized protocol and a common battery of extracts were used at each site.
