First principles calculations of the O surfaces of Co-ZnO show that substitutional Co ions develop large magnetic moments which long-range order depends on their mutual distance. The local spin polarization induced at the O atoms is 3 times larger at the surface than in the bulk, and the surface stability is considerably reinforced by Co. Moreover, a robust ferromagnetic state is predicted at the O (0001) surface even in the absence of magnetic atoms, correlated with the number of p holes in the valence band of the oxide, and with a highly anisotropic distribution of the magnetic charge even in the absence of spin-orbit coupling.

A descriptive, cross-sectional study is presented whose objective was to determine the level of knowledge about and the attitudes toward open access journals among Cuban health researchers. To this end, a printed questionnaire was distributed between March and June 2007 to a group of researchers from Cuban national health institutes, who were chosen through stratified random sampling (160 researchers from 11 institutes). Variables included level of information about Open Access Movement terms and initiatives; papers published in open access journals; and reasons to publish, or not to publish, papers in such journals.

Genomewide clonal analysis of lethal mutations in the Drosophila melanogaster eye: comparison of the X chromosome and autosomes.

Using a large consortium of undergraduate students in an organized program at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), we have undertaken a functional genomic screen in the Drosophila eye. In addition to the educational value of discovery-based learning, this article presents the first comprehensive genomewide analysis of essential genes involved in eye development. The data reveal the surprising result that the X chromosome has almost twice the frequency of essential genes involved in eye development as that found on the autosomes.

This qualitative research investigated the perception of mothers regarding hospital support after perinatal loss. Twelve in-depth interviews demonstrated that the mothers recalled the circumstances of the loss. Most identified the hospital's support services and made comments on aspects of hospital support as influential in grief recovery.

We report an infant with auditory neuropathy secondary to the Q829X mutation in the gene encoding otoferlin (OTOF). Included in a universal newborn hearing screening program, the subject passed the otoacoustic emission (OAEs) test. Given that the infant had a familial history of deafness auditory brainstem response (ABR) testing was performed, revealing a profound hearing impairment.

Optimization of DNA extraction from low-yield and degraded samples using the BioRobot EZ1 and BioRobot M48.

Robotic extraction of DNA from dilutions of blood and semen using either the BioRobots EZ1 or BioRobots M48 consistently produced lower recoveries than standard organic extractions of the same samples. In an effort to increase the efficiency of robotically extracted DNA, glycogen and carrier RNA were added following cell lysis. The forensic community continues to seek improvements in cell separation methods from mixtures for DNA typing.
