Article Synopsis
  • The COVID-19 pandemic led to a significant decrease in invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) cases due to health restrictions, but this also resulted in lower vaccination rates.
  • After restrictions were lifted, IMD cases rebounded quickly, with a notable increase among adolescents and young adults, surpassing pre-pandemic levels by 2023.
  • Changes in epidemiology and genotyping were observed, particularly for serogroups W and Y, while cases of serogroup C remained low due to effective childhood vaccination programs.

Article Synopsis
  • * A study analyzing IMD cases in France from 2015 to 2022 found an increase in non-meningeal forms, such as pneumonic and abdominal IMD, particularly in older and young adults, respectively.
  • * The rise in these atypical forms may result in worse outcomes due to delays in diagnosis, suggesting a need to update vaccination strategies to better respond to these changes in the disease's patterns.

Since January 2018, mandatory vaccination against meningococci serogroup C has been implemented in France for children <2 years with a recommended catch-up vaccination until the age of 24 years. We aimed to analyse the impact of mandatory vaccination on populations not targeted by it (2-24 years old). We used the database of the national reference centre for meningococci to collect the number of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) cases before (2016-2017) and after (2018-2019) the mandatory vaccination.
