A cohort of 53 patients (age range 1.9-16.5 years) with sickle cell disease (49 homozygous SS and four S beta zero-thalassaemia) was studied for evidence of sleep related upper airway obstruction (UAO).

It should therefore be considered in the differential diagnosis of any child with signs or symptoms that remain unexplained after standard investigations or are unresponsive to treatment.

The precise roles of the EGF-R in vivo are largely unknown, especially their role in growth and development of embryonic tissues. We reported earlier that EGF-Rs are not expressed on the cell surface of undifferentiated embryonal carcinoma (EC) cells, but intracellular receptor protein is detectable (A.

Determining the location of the lesion is the primary goal in early assessment of the unresponsive patient. Examination of the patient's eyes is the single most important step in understanding coma.

In this study, the relationship between anaemia and apparent life-threatening events was retrospectively investigated in 72 term infants referred for assessment and home monitoring following an apparent life-threatening event. For 41 infants (25 male, 16 female; 38 Caucasian, three Asian) a venous red blood cell count was available.

Nine calves free of P. haemolytica were divided into two groups.

We have studied the initiation of transcription in vitro by RNA polymerase II on simian virus 40 (SV40) minichromosomal templates isolated from infected cells. The efficiency and pattern of transcription from the chromatin templates were compared with those from viral DNA templates by using two in vitro transcription systems, either HeLa whole-cell extract or basal transcription factors, RNA polymerase II, and one of two SV40 promoter-binding transcription factors, LSF and Sp1. Dramatic increases in numbers of transcripts upon addition of transcription extract and different patterns of usage of the multiple SV40 initiation sites upon addition of Sp1 versus LSF strongly suggested that transcripts were being initiated from the minichromosomal templates in vitro.

The hypothalamic factors dopamine (DA) and somatostatin (SRIH) inhibit pituitary glycoprotein secretion, but little is known regarding the effects of these factors on glycoprotein pulses. To address this question, 12 healthy volunteers underwent frequent blood sampling over 12 h at baseline and during 12-h infusions of DA and/or SRIH. TSH, LH, FSH, and alpha-subunit (alpha) levels were measured in all samples, and hormone pulses were located by Cluster analysis.

PRL, like other anterior pituitary hormones, is normally secreted in a pulsatile fashion. However, it is not known whether such pulses depend on dopamine and/or other hypothalamic factors. This question can be addressed by investigating patients with large pituitary mass lesions, since such patients often have hyperprolactinemia due to disruption of normal hypothalamic input to the pituitary gland.

To study patterns of hormone production and secretion in glycoprotein-producing pituitary tumors, 12 patients with such tumors underwent the following studies. Preoperatively, all patients had serum TSH, LH, FSH, and alpha-subunit levels measured every 15 min for 24 h. Hormone pulses were located by cluster analysis, and pulse parameters were compared to those in healthy young men, healthy young women, healthy postmenopausal women, and subjects with primary hypothyroidism.

The events most critical to the establishment of a particular differentiation pathway must occur early since P19 cells are committed to differentiation pathways after 30 min of exposure to RA (M. W.

Our earlier work indicated that Egr-1 and c-fos may also play roles in differentiation and we now present data to show some features of their regulation. Transcriptional regulation accounts at least partly for the increased steady-state levels of Egr-1 mRNA in differentiating teratocarcinoma cells; this rate increases threefold over the 7-10 days of differentiation of P19 embryonal carcinoma cells with both 0.

Among the late transcripts, male-specific mRNAs were distinguished from their female counterparts by the presence of an extra exon interrupting an otherwise long open reading frame (ORF). We have now analyzed the structures of the late Sxl transcripts by cDNA sequencing, Northern (RNA) blotting, primer extension, and RNase protection.
