Schwannoma is a peripheral nerve tumour, accounting for 5% of benign soft tissue tumours, with vestibular schwannoma comprising 6% of all intracranial tumours. The tumour stem cell concept is rapidly gaining traction underscoring the understanding of tumourigenesis. It proposes a small subpopulation of primitive cells as the origin of the tumour and these cells account for treatment resistance, local recurrence and distant metastasis in malignant tumours.

We assessed the incidence of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) in children aged <15 years with newly diagnosed type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) in the Auckland Region (New Zealand) in 1999-2013, in a retrospective review of a complete regional cohort. DKA and its severity were classified according to ISPAD 2014 guidelines. Of 730 children presenting with new-onset T1DM over the 15-year time period, 195 cases had DKA of any severity (27%).

Background: We aimed to evaluate the incidence of type 1 diabetes mellitus in children <15 years of age (yr) in the Auckland region (New Zealand) over 20 years (1990-2009).

Methods: We performed a retrospective review of all patients <15 yr diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, from an unselected complete regional cohort.

Results: There were 884 new cases of type 1 diabetes, and age at diagnosis rose from 7.

Background: Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) may lead to severe long-term health consequences. In a longitudinal study, we aimed to identify factors present at diagnosis and 6 months later that were associated with glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA(1c)) levels at 24 months after T1DM diagnosis, so that diabetic children at risk of poor glycaemic control may be identified.

Methods: 229 children <15 years of age diagnosed with T1DM in the Auckland region were studied.
