The recently identified bilateral macroscopic tubarial salivary glands present a potential opportunity for further toxicity mitigation for patients receiving head and neck radiotherapy. Here, we show superior dosimetric sparing of the tubarial salivary glands with proton radiation therapy (PRT) compared to intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) for patients treated postoperatively for human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC). We measured changes in 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) uptake on positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) images in the lung parenchyma to quantify the degree of lung inflammation in patients with locally advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) who received radiotherapy (RT). The goal of this study was to demonstrate successful implementation of this imaging methodology on NSCLC patients and to report quantitative statistics between pre-RT and post-RT. Purpose: To describe an implementation of dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) for calculation of proton stopping-power ratios (SPRs) in a commercial treatment-planning system. The process for validation and the workflow for safe deployment of DECT is described, using single-energy computed tomography (SECT) as a safety check for DECT dose calculation.

Importance: While early epidemiologic studies ascribed increases in the incidence of human papillomavirus-associated oropharyngeal cancers to middle-aged patients, recent analyses have demonstrated an increasing median age of diagnosis. Treatment of patients older than 70 years is controversial as their inclusion in the practice-defining clinical trials has been limited and the survival benefit conferred by chemotherapy may be outweighed by treatment toxic effects.

Despite the fact that a large portion of medical students pursue training in a cancer-related discipline, oncology is emphasized to a disproportionately lesser extent than are other disciplines in medical school. Medical students have wide gaps in their oncology-specific knowledge, and undergraduate medical education fails to address the multidisciplinary nature of oncology. To address these shortcomings and improve medical students' understanding of the multidisciplinary nature of oncology, we have instituted a clinical oncology elective for medical students: an optional, 2-day session held after classes and promoted by student interest groups.

Purpose: Recent studies suggest that ultrahigh-dose-rate, "FLASH," electron radiation therapy (RT) decreases normal tissue damage while maintaining tumor response compared with conventional dose rate RT. Here, we describe a novel RT apparatus that delivers FLASH proton RT (PRT) using double scattered protons with computed tomography guidance and provide the first report of proton FLASH RT-mediated normal tissue radioprotection.
