Use of North Carolina Medicaid Collaborative Care Billing Codes After Statewide Approval for Reimbursement.

Effective October 2018, North Carolina Medicaid approved reimbursement for collaborative care model (CoCM) billing codes. From October 2018 through December 2019, only 915 of the estimated two million eligible Medicaid beneficiaries had at least one CoCM claim, and the median number of claims per patient was two. Availability of reimbursement for CoCM Medicaid billing codes in North Carolina did not immediately result in robust utilization of CoCM.

Background: A better understanding of attitudes and beliefs held by traditional healers and utilizers of traditional medicine concerning mental health conditions in Liberia is important as Liberia seeks to improve its delivery of mental healthcare in the context of scarce resources and recovery from civil war.

Methods: A qualitative research design was used to collect data from 24 Liberian traditional healers, and 11 utilizers of Liberian traditional medicine. Participants were queried about mental health problems in Liberia, treatments, and attitudes towards modern healthcare.

Contributing Risk Factors for Substance Use Among Youth in Postconflict Liberia.

Substance use is prevalent among youth in postconflict African countries and is associated with a number of public health problems such as poverty, child homelessness, and school truancy. This qualitative study explores the risk factors associated with substance use among Liberian youth from the perspective of public-school students. Nine focus groups were conducted with 72 Liberian public-school students (35 female, 37 male).

Access to education has been shown to strongly influence adolescent health across the world, and strong relationships with teachers has been found to lead to better academic and psychosocial outcomes for students. In many low-income countries where adolescents have less access to education and are more likely to experience poor health outcomes, risky sexual behaviors can exacerbate these challenges by increasing the risk of unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. This study sought to examine risky behaviors, such as substance use and risky sexual practices, of in-school youth in Liberia, a country in West Africa.

Liberians have experienced significant psychological trauma following fourteen years of violent civil war and the 2014-2015 Ebola epidemic, but there are only two psychiatrists for the entire population. However, many traditional healers commonly treat mental health-related illnesses throughout the country. This paper examines the potential for collaboration between traditional and Western medicine to close the mental health treatment gap in Liberia.

Fine Epitope Mapping of Monoclonal Antibodies to the DNA Repair Protein, RadA.

Repair of DNA damage is vital to the health and survival of all organisms. In Escherichia coli, a protein known as RadA (or Sms) participates in recombinational repair, a process that uses an undamaged DNA strand in one DNA duplex to fill a gap in a homologous DNA strand in a sister DNA duplex. In a prior report, we described the production of monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) specific for RadA.

A Qualitative Analysis of Substance Use among Liberian Youth: Understanding Behaviors, Consequences, and Protective Factors Involving School Youth and the School Milieu.

Objective: Substance use is a significant and common problem among school-aged youths throughout Africa. Like other countries on this continent, the West-African nation of Liberia is recovering from civil war. A well-educated population of young people is critical to the recovery efforts and long-term success of Liberia.

Video-teleconferencing with medical students to improve exposure to child and adolescent psychiatry.

Objective: The chronic workforce shortage in child and adolescent psychiatry (CAP) remains a germane issue that has been difficult to deal with effectively. Collaboration between medical schools without sufficient CAP resources and those with enough to share may help improve interest in the field.

Method: This lecture series piloted a collaborative effort between CAP residents from a Midwest academic center and student-led interest groups from two osteopathic medical schools.

Psychiatric comorbidity in children and adolescents with restless legs syndrome: a retrospective study.

Objective: Children and adolescents with restless legs syndrome (RLS) are commonly diagnosed with comorbid attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and behavioral disturbances. Uncertainty exists over the significance of other co-occurring psychiatric disorders and their pharmacologic management in children with RLS. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence and nature of psychiatric disorders in children with RLS and to describe the use of psychotropic medications in our study cohort.

The safety of electroconvulsive therapy in patients with prolonged QTc intervals on the electrocardiogram.

Background: Prolonged QTc intervals have been associated with increased cardiac morbidity and mortality. We investigated whether pretreatment prolongation of the QTc interval was associated with increased cardiac-related events (CREs) in electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) treatment of psychiatric disorders.

Methods: The charts of 1437 ECT patients were reviewed for the presence of baseline QTc prolongation.

Oocyte maturation is dependent on a complex program of morphological, ultrastructural, and biochemical signaling events, and if disrupted could lead to decreased fertility and population decline. The in vitro sensitivity of amphibian oocytes and oocyte maturation to plant growth factor and widely used hormonal herbicide, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), was examined in this study to determine its potential impact on early development and possible contribution to the global amphibian decline. Progesterone, which acts through a membrane receptor, triggers meiotic maturation in full grown (stage VI) Xenopus oocytes, characterized by cytoskeletal reorganization, nuclear dissolution, chromosome condensation, and spindle formation.
