Purpose: To examine associations between Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL) 4.0 Generic Core Scales and PedsQL Infant Scales with formal health care resource utilization (HCRU) and informal caregiver burden.
Methods: We studied a pediatric cohort of 837 patients (median age: 8.
Importance: With more than 6.2 million hospitalizations due to COVID-19 in the US, recognition of the average hospital costs to provide inpatient care during the pandemic is necessary to understanding the national medical resource use and improving public health readiness and related policies.
Objective: To examine the mean cost to provide inpatient care to treat COVID-19 and how it varied through the pandemic waves and by important sociodemographic patient characteristics.
Purpose: To better understand the effects of returning diagnostic sequencing results on clinical actions and economic outcomes for pediatric patients with suspected genetic disorders.
Methods: Longitudinal physician claims data after diagnostic sequencing were obtained for patients aged 0 to 21 years with neurologic, cardiac, and immunologic disorders with suspected genetic etiology. We assessed specialist consultation rates prompted by primary diagnostic results, as well as marginal effects on overall 18-month physician services and costs.
Background: Professional society guidelines recommend limiting the use of antipsychotics in older patients with postoperative delirium. How these recommendations affected the use of antipsychotics and other psychoactive drugs in the postoperative period has not been studied.
Methods: This retrospective cohort study included patients 65 years or older without psychiatric diagnoses who underwent major surgery in community hospitals (CHs) and academic medical centers (AMCs) in the United States.
Background: Patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) can develop malignant bowel obstructions (MBOs) requiring inpatient admission and nasogastric tube decompression. Palliative decompressive gastrostomy tubes (G-tubes) may affect patient disposition, allowing for self-management and reduction in inpatient services. Therefore, we sought to assess disposition and inpatient readmission rates in patients admitted with PC and MBO following G-tube placement.

Methods: A sample of patients undergoing outpatient hysterectomy in October 2015 to December 2021, excluding those with a diagnosis of gynecologic malignancy, was obtained from the Vizient Clinical Database. The primary outcome was total direct hysterectomy cost, which is a modeled cost to produce care.
Background: Rates of spontaneous cerebrospinal fluid leak (sCSF) repairs have increased in recent decades in line with increases in obesity rates.
Objectives: To determine if the national rate of sCSF leak has continued to rise in recent years and to identify associated risk factors utilizing a comprehensive national database comprising most academic medical centers.
Methods: A retrospective review from 2009 to 2018 was performed using the Vizient Clinical Database (CDB) of 105 leading academic medical centers in the United States.
Background: Studies of the early months of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic indicate that patient outcomes may be adversely affected by surges. However, the impact on in-hospital mortality during the largest surge to date, September 2020-March 2021, has not been studied. This study aimed to determine whether in-hospital mortality was impacted by the community surge of COVID-19.

Traditional methods to adjust cost estimates have exclusively used administrative data derived from billing claims to identify comorbidity and complications. Transplantation uniquely has accurate national clinical registry data that can be used to supplement administrative data.

We aimed to describe variability in SAH care using patient-level data and identify factors impacting hospital outcomes and regional variability in outcomes.
Methods: A retrospective multi-center cross-sectional cohort study of consecutive non-traumatic SAH patients in the Vizient Clinical Data Base, between January 1st, 2009 and December 30th, 2018 was performed.

Study Objective: To identify recent nationwide trends in hemostatic agent (HA) use and to explore factors associated with HA use in 3 benign gynecologic surgery contexts: isolated hysterectomy, pelvic organ prolapse repair, and anti-incontinence surgery.
Design: Retrospective cohort study.
Setting: Vizient Clinical Database.
Introduction: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic continues to spread globally and as of February 4, 2021, there are more than 26 million confirmed cases and more than 440,000 deaths in the United States (US). A top priority of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is to identify risk factors for severe COVID-19 illness. The objective of this study was to analyze the characteristics and outcomes of COVID-19 adults who were managed in an outpatient setting compared to patients who required hospitalization at US academic centers.

Structured interventions can assist organizations in determining whether interventional efforts have led to sustained improvement. The PARiHS framework (Promoting Action on Research Implementation in Health Services) can assist organizations in implementing research into practice.

Background: CDT is an increasingly utilized therapy in patients with intermediate/high-risk PE. However, data on the relationship between hospital volume and clinical outcomes remain limited.

Background: Obesity and several obesity-related co-morbidities are risk factors for severe COVID-19 disease. Because bariatric surgery successfully treats obesity-related conditions, we hypothesized that prior bariatric surgery may be associated with less severe COVID-19 disease.
Objectives: To examine the association between prior bariatric surgery and outcomes in patients with obesity admitted with COVID-19.
Goals/background: Pain is common among cirrhosis patients, particularly those hospitalized with acute illness. Managing pain in this population is challenging due to concern for adverse events and lack of guidelines for analgesic use. We sought to characterize analgesic use among inpatients with cirrhosis compared with matched noncirrhosis controls, as well as hospital-level variation in prescribing patterns.

The objective of this study was to analyze the characteristics and outcomes of male compared to female adults with COVID-19 who required hospitalization within US academic centers.
Methods: Using the Vizient clinical database, discharge records of adults with a diagnosis of COVID-19 between March 1, 2020 and November 30, 2020 were reviewed.
Pain is common among patients with cirrhosis, yet managing pain in this population is challenging. Opioid analgesics are thought to be particularly high risk in patients with cirrhosis, and their use has been discouraged. We sought to understand patterns of opioid use among inpatients with cirrhosis and the risks of serious opioid-related adverse events in this population.

We hypothesize a consequence of COVID-19 is reduced operative volume across the country. We aim to examine changes in volume of common gastrointestinal operations during COVID-19, including elective, urgent/emergent, and cancer operations.

Summary Background Data: ECMO has been utilized in COVID-19 patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and refractory hypoxemia. Early case series with the use of ECMO in these patients reported high mortality exceeding 90%.
Background: Sex-based differences in transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) outcomes have been previously documented. However, whether these differences persist with contemporary third generation transcatheter heart valves (THVs) is unknown.
Methods: We utilized Vizient's clinical database/resource manager (CDB/RM™) to identify patients who underwent TAVR between January 1, 2018 and March 31, 2020 to compare in-hospital outcomes between males and females.
