Background: Heat stress (HS) in cattle is a major debilitating problem, affecting health and milk yield. Physiologically, HS has been shown to lower blood glucose levels to 2.5 mmol/l (45 mg/dl) and results in upregulation of heat shock proteins (HSPs), eliciting the heat shock response (HSR) of which HSP90, 70 and 27 have been shown to be protective.
