Torsades de Pointes (TdP) is a life-threatening ventricular arrhythmia that can be associated with metabolic abnormalities, exposure to arrhythmogenic medications, and congenital long-QT syndrome. This report describes a patient with ALL and multiple complications of therapy who developed TdP. The patient had no evidence of congenital long-QT syndrome, but a constellation of factors appears to have led to QT prolongation, ventricular ectopy, and TdP.

Background: The recommended dose for pediatric defibrillation is 2 J/kg, based on animal studies of brief duration ventricular fibrillation (VF) and a single pediatric study of short duration in-hospital VF. In a piglet model of out-of-hospital (prolonged) cardiac arrest, this recommended dose was usually ineffective at terminating VF. We, therefore, hypothesized that pediatric dose defibrillation may be less effective for prolonged out-of-hospital pediatric VF.

Phylogenetic relationships of Paecilomyces sect. Isarioidea species were analysed using the beta-tubulin gene and ITS rDNA. Maximum parsimony analyses showed that the section does not form a natural taxonomic group and is polyphyletic within the Hypocreales.

A collection of 75 strains of Pectobacterium chrysanthemi (including all biovars and pathovars) and the type strains of Brenneria paradisiaca (CFBP 4178(T)) and Pectobacterium cypripedii (CFBP 3613(T)) were studied by DNA-DNA hybridization, numerical taxonomy of 121 phenotypic characteristics, serology and 16S rRNA gene-based phylogenetic analyses. From analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences, it was deduced that P. chrysanthemi strains and B.

Aminoacyl-tRNA synthetase-containing complexes have been identified in different eukaryotes, and their existence has also been suggested in some Archaea. To investigate interactions involving aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases in Archaea, we undertook a yeast two-hybrid screen for interactions between Methanothermobacter thermautotrophicus proteins using prolyl-tRNA synthetase (ProRS) as the bait. Interacting proteins identified included components of methanogenesis, protein-modifying factors, and leucyl-tRNA synthetase (LeuRS).

Fungal diseases in insects are common and widespread and can decimate their populations in spectacular epizootics. Virtually all insect orders are susceptible to fungal diseases, including Dipterans. Fungal pathogens such as Lagenidium, Coelomomyces and Culicinomyces are known to affect mosquito populations, and have been studied extensively.

The occurrence of "Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. phaseoli var. fuscans" (proposed name) populations as biofilms on bean leaves was investigated during three field experiments on plots established with naturally contaminated bean seeds.

A strain from the group of black Aspergilli was analysed in detail to determine the species to which it belongs. A detailed analysis of morphology, RFLP patterns and metabolite profiles was carried out. In addition, a phylogenetic tree was constructed for the black Aspergilli using the ITS and the beta-tubulin sequences of the individual strains.

Total metal content by itself is insufficient as a measure to indicate actual environmental risk. Understanding the mobility of heavy metals in the soil and their speciation in the soil solution is of great importance for accurately assessing environmental risks posed by these metals. In a first explorative study, the effects of general soil characteristics on Cd mobility were evaluated and expressed in the form of empirical formulations.

Fast-growing Zygomycetes, most notably Rhizopus oligosporus, are traditionally used in many food fermentations, for example, for soybean tempeh production. R. oligosporus is considered to belong to the Rhizopus microsporus group.

Objectives: This study was designed to compare outcome after adult defibrillation dosing versus pediatric dosing in a piglet model of prolonged prehospital ventricular fibrillation (VF).

Background: Weight-based 2 to 4 J/kg monophasic defibrillation dosing is recommended for children in VF, but impractical for automated external defibrillator (AED) use. Present AEDs can only provide adult shock doses or newly developed attenuated adult doses intended for children.

Much evidence indicates that fear conditioning involves potentiation of some thalamic inputs to the lateral amygdala (LA). In turn, the LA would excite more neurons in the central nucleus (CE), leading to the generation of fear responses via their brainstem and hypothalamic projections. However, the posterior thalamus not only projects to LA but also to the medial sector of CE (CEm), suggesting that CEm might also be a site of plasticity.

The magnetization transfer ratio (MTR) is strongly related to the field strength (B(1)) of the saturation pulse. B(1) variations therefore can result in significant MTR variations and can affect histogram analysis, particularly if data from a large volume of interest are included. A multicenter study was performed to determine the typical range of B(1) errors and the corresponding MTR variations in brain tissue of healthy volunteers.

[Quality assurance in the diagnosis of indoor fungi].

Bundesgesundheitsblatt Gesundheitsforschung Gesundheitsschutz

January 2005

In co-ordination with the Umweltbundesamt Berlin, the Landesgesundheitsamt Baden-Wurttemberg (LGA) initiated external quality assurance in the diagnosis of indoor fungi in autumn 2001. Four of six fungal strains commonly found indoors have to be fully identified (on the genus and species level). There are two distributions per year; the six distributions hitherto carried out resulted in correct identification by 46-89% of laboratories (40-71 participants, total 148).

Without any incentive to clean up a contaminated site, remediation is often delayed until the site owner is compelled to act by regulatory agencies. In such a context, the selected technology is typically the one that will reach the remediation goals as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, this criterion is often met by overly expensive technologies, resulting in high and sometimes unaffordable total remediation costs, leading to a remediation with a negative net benefit.
