The neurological disorders caused by Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV) in the absence of skin rash are a challenge to the clinician. The presentation varies from acute to subacute to chronic. Reactivation of VZV usually produces zoster (shingles), meningitis or meningoencephalitis, cerebellitis, isolated or multiple cranial nerve palsies (polyneuritis cranialis), myelitis, and vasculopathy.

Skeletal Age-related Changes of Midpalatal Suture Densities in Skeletal Maxillary Constriction Patients: CBCT Study.

Aim: To determine if density measurements of the midpalatal suture and cervical vertebral maturation index (CVMI) are related, and to investigate if CVMI could help in predicting of the developmental status of the midpalatal suture.

Materials And Methods: Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images of 95 skeletal maxillary constriction patients (aged 8 to 18 years) were examined. The maturational stages of the cervical vertebrae were visually defined, and midpalatal suture density in the anterior region, the middle region, and the posterior region were measured.

Injuries in Australian Rules Football: An Overview of Injury Rates, Patterns, and Mechanisms Across All Levels of Play.

Context: The nature of Australian rules football (Australian football) predisposes both unique and common injuries compared with those sustained in other football codes. The game involves a combination of tackling, kicking, high-speed running (more than other football codes), and jumping. Two decades of injury surveillance has identified common injuries at the professional level (Australian Football League [AFL]).

Patterns of platelet-rich plasma use among Australasian sports physicians.

Background: We hypothesised that the application, production and administration of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) varies widely among sports physicians, bringing into question the validity and consistency of PRP described in research and clinical use. We also assessed congruence between the reported clinical indications for PRP, and the available research evidence for these indications.

Methods: We conducted an anonymous 23 question online survey of 153 current Fellows of the Australasian College of Sports Physicians (ACSP), using an emailed link.

Aims: To determine whether a single ultrasound-guided platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection into the anterior inferior tibiofibular ligament (AITFL) reduces the time for rugby athletes to return to function and match play following MRI confirmed ankle syndesmosis injury.

Methods: Cohort controlled pilot study. 10 Rugby Union players were recruited during the 2014 season, and consented to receive a single autologous PRP injection into the AITFL within 14 days of MRI confirmed ankle syndesmosis injury.

Multi-drug resistance (MDR) is a trend whereby tumor cells exposed to one cytotoxic agent develop cross-resistance to a range of structurally and functionally unrelated compounds. P-glycoprotein (P-gp) efflux pump is one of the mostly studied drug carrying processes that shuttle the drugs out of tumor cells. Thus, P-gp inhibitors have attracted a lot of attention as they can stop cancer drugs from being pumped out of target cells with the consumption of ATP.

T and B cell deficiency associated with yellow nail syndrome.

Yellow nail syndrome (YNS) is a rare disorder of unknown aetiology that is characterized by yellow nails associated with lymphoedema and chronic respiratory manifestations. There are no detailed immunological studies in YNS. In this study, we present first extensive immunological analysis of both adaptive and innate immunity in two patients with YNS.

Adaptive and Innate Immune Responses in Autism: Rationale for Therapeutic Use of Intravenous Immunoglobulin.

Autism is a complex polygenic neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by deficits in communication and social interactions as well as specific stereotypical behaviors. Both genetic and environmental factors appear to contribute to the pathogenesis of autism. Accumulating data including changes in immune responses, linkage to major histocompatibility complex antigens, and the presence of autoantibodies to neural tissues/antigens suggest that the immune system plays an important role in its pathogenesis.

Transurethral electrovaporization of the prostate: is it any better than conventional transurethral resection of the prostate?

Objective: To evaluate transurethral electrovaporization of the prostate (TUVP), compared with transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP), as a treatment for men with symptomatic benign prostatic enlargement (BPE).

Patients And Methods: In all, 235 men with symptomatic BPE in four hospitals in the South-East of England were randomized to TUVP (115) and TURP (120). Patients were assessed using the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS), the Short Form-36 (SF-36), EuroQol and sexual function questionnaire, uroflowmetry, ultrasonographic measurement of residual urine volume, pressure-flow urodynamics and transrectal ultrasonography.

Leptospirosis in pregnancy and its effect on the fetus: case report and review.

We report the case of a pregnant woman with leptospirosis who gave birth to a healthy baby. We also review 15 previously reported cases of leptospirosis in pregnancy. Of these 15 cases, eight women had abortions, two delivered healthy babies, and four delivered babies who had signs of active leptospirosis; in one case, the fate of the fetus was not stated.

Long-term follow-up after leptospirosis.

Human leptospirosis is an infectious disease that is a substantial problem in the Third World, but it can occur in developed countries as well. Survivors of the acute disease are considered to recover without sequelae, though little literature exists on long-term follow-up among these patients. Eleven patients, at an average of 22 years after acute leptospirosis, were reevaluated for possible delayed sequelae.

Myocardial infarction during pregnancy and puerperium is very rare. Increased awareness of its possible occurrence is important for diagnosis. A young woman who developed acute myocardial infarction 14 days after labor is described.

Inherited progressive cone--rod dystrophy and alopecia.

Two young sisters of Yemenite Jewish family with progressive cone-rod dystrophy accompanied with progressive alopecia of the scalp in one patient and with alopecia of the scalp and eyelashes in the other patient are presented. This rare disease seems to be autosomal recessively inherited since the patient's parents are first cousins and the family history is positive for a paternal grandmother and great-aunt having the same condition.

Scintigraphic assessment of ectopic splenic tissue localization and function following splenectomy for trauma.

Twenty-three subjects who had a splenectomy as a result of trauma underwent scintigraphic evaluation with a sensitive heat-denatured 99mTc-labeled red blood cells (DRBC). This method enabled detection of ectopic splenic tissue foci (ESTF) as small as 1 X 1 cm in diameter. ESTF splenosis or accessory spleen was detected in 15 cases (65%), a higher incidence than previously reported.

Passive immunization in experimental Herpesvirus hominis infection of newborn mice.

Infection of newborn mice with Herpesvirus hominis type 2(HVH-2) was used as an experimental model of disseminated HVH infection in newborn humans. Mice were challenged with 103 plaque-forming units of HVH-2 intranasally and were given 0.2 ml of rabbit serum intraperitoneally.
