Schizolobium parahyba seed chymotrypsin inhibitor (SPC) is a protein with M(r) of 20,000 and four half-cystine residues and no free thiol group. SPC is stable at temperatures up to 75 degrees at pH 7 but gradually loses activity when kept at 95 degrees for 1 hr and total inactivation occurs after 5 hr. Amino acid analysis shows a high content of glycine, aspartate, glutamate and alanine residues.

Conclusive evidence was provided that gamma 1, the upstream of the two linked simian gamma-globin loci (5'-gamma 1-gamma 2-3'), is a pseudogene in a major group of New World monkeys. Sequence analysis of PCR-amplified genomic fragments of predicted sizes revealed that all extant genera of the platyrrhine family Atelidae [Lagothrix (woolly monkeys), Brachyteles (woolly spider monkeys), Ateles (spider monkeys), and Alouatta (howler monkeys)] share a large deletion that removed most of exon 2, all of intron 2 and exon 3, and much of the 3' flanking sequence of gamma 1. The fact that two functional gamma-globin genes were not present in early ancestors of the Atelidae (and that gamma 1 was the dispensible gene) suggests that for much or even all of their evolution, platyrrhines have had gamma 2 as the primary fetally expressed gamma-globin gene, in contrast to catarrhines (e.

1. Aqueous extracts of Enterolobium contortisiliquum seeds contain an endopeptidase of M(r) 60,000 with specificity for basic amino acid residues. The enzyme was purified by chromatography on DEAE Sephadex, followed by gel filtration on Sephadex G-75 and affinity chromatography on Zinc-Sepharose.

Purpose: To evaluate the antihypertensive efficacy and safety of cilazapril compared to nifedipine retard in mild to moderate hypertension.

Methods: forty randomized out-patients with mild moderate hypertension, diastolic pressure (DP) between 95 and 115 mmHg, with placebo for 15 days were randomized and allocated for treatment, double-blind, once daily with cilazapril 2.5 mg (n = 20) or nifedipine retard 20 mg (20 = n) for four weeks.

The case of a patient with meningoencephafalitis due to a nonencapsulated strain of Cryptococcus neoformans is reported; he had no risk factors for the disease or AIDS. Clinical examination showed a chronic meningoencephalitis first diagnosed as tuberculosis. In the second cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) examination after a week from admission yeasts appeared inside macrophage cells.

In Bradyrhizobium japonicum, Tn5 insertions in a particular chromosomal DNA fragment result in a Hup- phenotype in free-living conditions without affecting hydrogenase (Hup) activity in the symbiotic state. By determination of the nucleotide sequence of this region, we were able to identify the nature of the inactivated genes. The fragment is located 9 kb downstream of the hydrogenase structural genes and contains one incomplete and three complete open reading frames.

An electrophoretic survey of 15 protein systems (22 loci) was employed to determine the genetic relationships among 9 populations (441 individuals) of South American squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus sciureus, S. sciureus boliviensis, and S. sciureus ustus).

Based on the fact that Chenopodium amaranticolor extracts showed inhibitory activity against tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) and Ehrlich tumour (EA), tests were carried out to investigate whether the antiviral and antitumoral activity were caused by the same compounds. When the extract was purified by CM Sephadex C-25 column, after precipitation with 90% ammonium sulphate, twenty active fractions against TMV and two pools of fractions active against EA were obtained. Only one fraction with high absorbance values at 260 and 280 nm was able to inhibit both TMV and EA.

Two hundred and four patients who underwent renal transplantation were followed up as outpatients with a minimum of four years. They were divided into two socio-economic levels: group I - 104 patients who underwent transplantation in a private hospital and 120 patients (group II) with a lower socio-economic standard, treated in a public hospital. In both groups urinary infections and hepatitis were excluded.

Purpose: To compare the antihypertensive and metabolic effects of captopril combined with hydrochlorothiazide (C+HCTZ) versus chlorthalidone (CT) in mild and moderate primary hypertensive patients.

Methods: Fifty five patients, without treatment or treated with 15 days placebo were randomized for treatment with the combination of captopril 50mg and hydrochlorothiazide 25mg (n = 29) against chlorthalidone (n = 26). The clinical evaluation was done during placebo and monthly throughout three months, and the laboratory tests were done before and at the end of the study.

We have previously observed impaired progesterone accumulation in vitro in response to human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) by cells pretreated in vivo with a gonadotropin releasing hormone analog (GnRH-a). The present study was conducted in order to evaluate different protocols for GnRH-a in in vitro fertilization (IVF), employing two different available analogs. Granulosa-luteal cells were collected at ovum pick-up and stimulated with hCG.

Several lines of investigation suggest a direct modulatory role for gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) on granulosa cell functions. Also, GnRH and its analogues (GnRHa) have been implicated in the resumption of meiosis, both in vivo and in vitro. Despite the presence of specific receptors for GnRH on human granulosa and luteal cells, very little is known about the possible effects of this hormone on the ovary.

The genomic region of the Anticarsia gemmatalis multiple nucleocapsid nuclear polyhedrosis virus (AgMNPV) strain 2D encoding the polyhedrin gene was cloned and mapped, and a 2085 bp SphI-PstI fragment containing the gene was sequenced. The polyhedrin polypeptide of the parental isolate AgMNPV was manually sequenced, and the amino acid sequence obtained agreed with that deduced from the DNA coding region sequence. AgMNPV and Orgyia pseudotsugata MNPV (OpMNPV) are similar in terms of promoter structure and polyhedrin primary sequence, and the polyhedrin gene of both viruses is transcribed in the anti-clockwise direction in relation to their physical maps.

The value of hysterosalpingosonography (HSSG) as a diagnostic tool was evaluated in 76 patients and compared to hysteroscopic, laparoscopic, and/or hysterosalpingographic (HSG) findings. Saline solution and Dextran 60 were used as distension media. Patients were divided in three groups: group A (n = 22), patients submitted for control post-tubal electrocoagulation.

Regression analysis of the proportion of unfertilized oocytes on the number of oocytes retrieved per patient was applied to three different ovarian stimulation protocols in order to establish the relativity of the concept 'high responder to gonadotrophins' for in-vitro fertilization (IVF) patients. After fitting the data to the model: probit(proportion of unfertilized oocytes) + 5 = intercept + B Log10(oocytes retrieved per patient), women with a number of oocytes retrieved greater than or equal to the value necessary to obtain 50% fertilization were defined as high responders. Exogenous gonadotrophin stimulation which was commenced after complete suppression of ovarian activity by a gonadotrophin-releasing hormone analogue (GnRHa) (long protocol) resulted in a significantly higher number of oocytes retrieved (10.
