The use of chitosan-based gels is still limited due to their restricted solubility in acid solutions, where the molecules have a positive charge. The functionalization of chitosan makes it possible to significantly expand the possibilities of using both the polymer itself and hydrogels based on its derivatives. To evaluate the effect of the conditions for the production of cryo- and hydrogels based on carboxyethylchitosan (CEC) crosslinked with glutaraldehyde on gel swelling and its resistance to degradation depending on pH and cytotoxic effects and to test the hypothesis that the amount of crosslinking agent during synthesis may affect the cytotoxicity of the gel.

Background: The NIST retention index database is one the most widely used sources of retention indices. In both untargeted analysis and machine learning studies filtering for potential errors is rather lacking or nonexistent. According to our estimates about 80% of the compounds from both NIST 17 and NIST 20 retention index databases have only one RI value per stationary phase, which makes searching for erroneous values with statistical methods impossible.

To date, few publications describe CEC's properties and possible applications-thus, further evaluation of these properties is a point of interest. The present in vitro model study aimed to evaluate a carboxyethylchitosan (CEC) gel with a degree of substitution of 1, cross-linked with glutaraldehyde at a polymer:aldehyde molar ratio of 10:1, as a potential carrier for delivering bacteriophages to various pH-fixed media (acidic, alkaline), and including gastrointestinal tract (GIT) variable medium. A quantitative analysis of bacteriophages released from the gel was performed using photon correlation spectrophotometry, and phage activity after emission into medium was evaluated using the spot test.

Implant-associated infections are the most costly problem in modern orthopedics due to the continued increase in the occurrence of antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains that requires the development of new effective antimicrobials. A non-randomized, prospective, open-label, with historical control study on the use of combined phage/antibiotic therapy of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) was carried out. Forty-five adult patients with deep PJI of the hip joint were involved in the study, with a 12-month follow-up after one-stage revision surgery.

Rationale: Databases of electron ionization mass spectra are often used in GC/MS-based untargeted metabolomics analysis. The results of the library search depend on several factors, such as the size and quality of the database, and the library search algorithm. We found out that the list of considered m/z values is another important parameter.

Background: Elevated mean pulmonary artery pressure (mPAP) is common in patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and heart failure symptoms. However, dynamic left ventricular (LV) outflow tract obstruction may confound interpretation of pulmonary hypertension (PH) pathophysiologic features in HCM when relying on resting invasive hemodynamic data alone.

Research Question: Do structural changes to the lung vasculature clarify PH pathophysiologic features in patients with HCM with progressive heart failure?

Study Design And Methods: Clinical data and ultrarare lung autopsy specimens were acquired retrospectively from the National Institutes of Health (1975-1992).

A number of aromatic metabolites of tyrosine and phenylalanine have been investigated as new perspective markers of infectious complications in the critically ill patients of intensive care units (ICUs). The goal of our research was to build a multivariate model for predicting the outcome of critically ill patients regardless of the main pathology on the day of admission to the ICU. Eight aromatic metabolites were detected in serum using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.

The pathobiology of in situ pulmonary thrombosis in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) due to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection is incompletely characterized. In human pulmonary artery endothelial cells (HPAECs), hypoxia increases neural precursor cell expressed, developmentally downregulated 9 (NEDD9) and induces expression of a prothrombotic NEDD9 peptide (N9) on the extracellular plasma membrane surface. We hypothesized that the SARS-CoV-2-ARDS pathophenotype involves increased pulmonary endothelial N9.

It was revealed that nominal mass spectra extracted from the same NetCDF file using different gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) software products are not identical. This phenomenon is caused by differences in algorithms used for rounding floating-point m/z values to integers. It was found that all programs under consideration (AMDIS, ChemStation, ChromaTOF, MS Search, OpenChrom) use different procedures.

The possibility of obtaining composite micropowders of the W-C-Co system with a spherical particle shape having a submicron/nanoscale internal structure was experimentally confirmed. In the course of work carried out, W-C-Co system nanopowders with the average particle size of approximately 50 nm were produced by plasma-chemical synthesis. This method resulted in the uniform distribution of W, Co and C among the nanoparticles of the powder in the nanometer scale range.

The NiAl-Cr-Co- alloys were produced by centrifugal self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) casting. The effects of dopants = La, Mo, Zr, Ta, and Re on combustion, as well as the phase composition, structure, and properties of the resulting cast alloys, have been studied. The greatest improvement in overall properties was achieved when the alloys were co-doped with 15% Mo and 1.

Progress in precision medicine is limited by insufficient knowledge of transcriptomic or proteomic features in involved tissues that define pathobiological differences between patients. Here, myectomy tissue from patients with obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and heart failure is analyzed using RNA-Seq, and the results are used to develop individualized protein-protein interaction networks. From this approach, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is distinguished from dilated cardiomyopathy based on the protein-protein interaction network pattern.

A reduction in glucose consumption has been shown in both patients with acquired epilepsy and in animal epilepsy models. However, the question remains whether the disturbance of glucose metabolism is the driving force of epileptogenesis. We have recently reported that a chronic partial inhibition of brain glycolysis by the non-metabolizable glucose analogue 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG) triggers epileptogenesis in initially healthy rats.

Background: Pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) is a highly morbid disease characterized by elevated pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) and pathogenic right ventricular remodeling. Endothelial expression of the prometastatic protein NEDD9 is increased in fibrotic PAH arterioles, and NEDD9 inhibition decreases PVR in experimental PAH. We hypothesized that circulating NEDD9 is increased in PAH and informs the clinical profile of patients.

Only a small subset of known organic compounds (amenable for gas chromatography/mass spectrometry) is present in the largest mass spectral databases (such as NIST or Wiley). Nevertheless, library search algorithms available in the market are not able to predict the absence of a compound in the database. In the present work, we have tried to implement such prediction by means of supervised classification.

Cognitive malfunction, synaptic dysfunction, and disconnections in neural networks are core deficits in Alzheimer's disease (AD). 5xFAD mice, a transgenic model of AD, are characterized by an enhanced level of amyloid-β and abnormal neurotransmission. The dopaminergic (DA) system has been shown to be involved in amyloid-β transformations and neuronal plasticity; however, its role in functional network changes in familial AD still remains unclear.
