Outbreaks of Hepatitis A, caused by the Hepatitis A Virus (HAV), remain a worldwide health concern. We conducted a retrospective chart review to characterize patients with acute HAV during an outbreak at our urban tertiary care center to better characterize patients infected with HAV. We searched our electronic records for patients with positive HAV IgM antibodies during a period of outbreak in Philadelphia, May 2017-December 2019.

Current literature reports increased incidence of postpancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), a precursor for nonalcoholic steatohepatitis and cirrhosis. The incidence of and risk factors (RFs) for NAFLD in the PD population, however, are not well elucidated. A cohort of 421 patients from a single institution who underwent PD for carcinoma and followed for at least 6 months were assessed retrospectively for age, gender, pathology, surgical complications (operative blood loss and length of stay [LOS]), comorbidities (diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, obesity), tobacco use, pre- and postoperative nutritional status (albumin and body mass index [BMI]), use of pancreatic enzyme replacement, and perioperative laboratory values (hemoglobin and liver function test).

Brain injury is an etiological factor for temporal lobe epilepsy and can lead to memory and cognitive impairments. A recently characterized excitatory neuronal class in the dentate molecular layer, semilunar granule cell (SGC), has been proposed to regulate dentate network activity patterns and working memory formation. Although SGCs, like granule cells, project to CA3, their typical sustained firing and associational axon collaterals suggest that they are functionally distinct from granule cells.
