The toxic oxidation intermediate p-benzoquinone exists in aqueous environments at dilute concentrations above the fish-toxicity limit of 0.045 mg/L, affecting aquatic life. The reduction of this compound to the concentrations required to achieve safe discharge limits is challenging.
