Spontaneous large volume hemothorax managed with a small-bore chest tube.

A 67-year-old male with metastatic lung cancer presented with acute shortness of breath and increasing oxygen requirements. He had a decreasing hemoglobin for which he required red blood cell transfusions. His chest X-ray showed near complete white-out of the left lung.

Acquired Aorto-Right Ventricular Fistula following Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement.

Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) techniques are rapidly evolving, and results of published trials suggest that TAVR is emerging as the standard of care in certain patient subsets and a viable alternative to surgery in others. As TAVR is a relatively new procedure and continues to gain its acceptance, rare procedural complications will continue to appear. Our case is about an 89-year-old male with extensive past medical history who presented with progressive exertional dyspnea and angina secondary to severe aortic stenosis.

Unique presentations of invasive lobular breast cancer: a case series.

Introduction: Breast carcinoma is the most common malignancy in women. Unlike IDC, which typically metastasizes to the lung, liver or bone, ILC has been found to metastasize to GI tract, peritoneum and retroperitoneum. Nonspecific symptomology may be considered secondary to other diseases and this can delay the definite diagnosis and treatment of metastatic disease.

Transient serotonin syndrome caused by concurrent use of tramadol and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor.

Background: Serotonin syndrome is a potentially life-threatening adverse drug reaction that most commonly results from adverse interactions between drugs. Because serotonin syndrome can be fatal and is often difficult to diagnose, it is vital for health professionals to know about this reaction. We report a typical case of transient serotonin syndrome secondary to tramadol-Citalopram combination.

Complications of intracoronary abciximab bolus-only versus standard protocol during percutaneous coronary intervention in acute coronary syndrome.

Background: Abciximab reduces major adverse cardiac events in patients with ST elevation myocardial infarction undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention (pPCI). Standard protocol is intravenous abciximab bolus during PCI plus abciximab infusion for 12-18 h post pPCI. Intracoronary (IC) abciximab bolus administration results in high local drug concentrations and hence it should have higher antiplatelet effect.

Fulminant invasive aspergillosis of the mediastinum in an immunocompetent host: a case report.

Introduction: Invasive aspergillosis is a serious complication in immunocompromised patients. It is an opportunistic disease, which predominantly occurs in the lungs, although dissemination to virtually any organ is possible. Invasive aspergillosis in an immunocompetent patient with extension to the mediastinum has rarely been reported.

Perception and practices of breastfeeding of infants 0-6 months in an urban and a semi-urban community in Pakistan: a cross-sectional study.

Objective: To investigate mother's perception and practices about breastfeeding and their socio-demographic correlate in infants equal to or less than 6 months.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out on 200 mother-infant pairs who visited the health care centers, Bilal Colony (semi-urban) and the Aga Khan University (urban), for their well baby follow-ups and vaccination using convenient sampling. Frequencies and percentages were computed and Chi-square was used to find associations between socio-demographics of mothers and their perception and practices about breastfeeding.

Knowledge and awareness about cervical cancer and its prevention amongst interns and nursing staff in Tertiary Care Hospitals in Karachi, Pakistan.

Background And Objective: Cervical cancer is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality amongst the gynecological cancers worldwide, especially in developing countries. It is imperative for at least health professionals in developing countries like Pakistan to have a sound knowledge about the disease. This study was carried out to assess the knowledge and awareness about cervical cancer and its prevention amongst health professionals in tertiary care hospitals in Karachi, Pakistan.

Factors influencing medical student participation in an obstetrics and gynaecology clinic.

Objective: To identify factors influencing medical student participation in an obstetrics and gynaecology (OBGYN) setting.

Methods: This was a cross sectional study carried out on patients admitted in OBGYN wards of Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, Pakistan. A total of 250 patients consented to participate in this study.
