Introduction: Chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis (CRMO) is a rare autoinflammatory disease characterized by sterile inflammation of bony tissue. Although it has distinct clinical and radiologic features, it is often misdiagnosed, leading to inappropriate and delayed treatment. Indeed, at the origin the disease can have an exclusive maxillofacial location and so be, at least clinically, difficult to prove.

Introduction: Carotid-cavernous fistula is an abnormal communication between the internal carotid artery, the external carotid artery or any of their branches and the cavernous sinus. This condition may occur spontaneously or after craniofacial trauma; in this case the fistula takes place on the same side as the craniofacial fracture and becomes symptomatic within a few weeks. The diagnosis is clinical; it must be evoked before any post-traumatic proptosis.

Article Synopsis
  • Lingual tuberculosis, a rare form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis, often presents as a chronic non-healing lesion in the mouth, which can be mistaken for cancer.
  • A case study involving a 36-year-old woman highlights this misdiagnosis, as her lesion was initially thought to be a malignant fissure but was confirmed to be tuberculosis through a biopsy.
  • The report emphasizes the need for awareness of tuberculosis in cases of persistent oral lesions, as early recognition and treatment can lead to positive outcomes.

Synopsis of recent research by authors named "Sami El Hamid"

  • - Sami El Hamid's research primarily focuses on rare conditions related to the maxillofacial region, particularly chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis (CRMO) and its diagnostic challenges, as highlighted in his systematic literature review published in August 2024.
  • - His studies also explore complications arising from craniofacial trauma, such as contralateral traumatic carotid-cavernous fistulas, emphasizing the need for careful clinical assessment in post-traumatic cases, as discussed in his September 2021 publication.
  • - Additionally, El Hamid investigates the presentation of tuberculosis in atypical forms, such as lingual primary tuberculosis, which can masquerade as malignancy in the oral cavity, thus enhancing awareness of its symptomatic similarities and treatment challenges, as noted in his July 2021 article.
