Objectives: In scenarios of vaccine scarcity or contexts of organizational complexity, it is necessary to define prioritization strategies for allocating vaccine doses in compliance with the criterion of equity and efficiency of health resources. In this context, the COVIDIAGNOSTIX project, based on the health technology assessment (HTA), assessed the role of SARS-CoV-2 serological tests as a companion diagnostic in the definition of the vaccination strategies for the vaccine administration. To guarantee evidence support for health policy choices, two different vaccine strategies were analyzed, one based on administering the vaccine booster dose to the entire population (VACCINE strategy) and the other based on allocation criteria (TEST&VACCINE strategy).

The search for novel lipid A analogues from any biological source that can act as antagonists, displaying inhibitory activity towards the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, or as immunomodulators in mammals, is a very topical issue. To this aim, the structure and immunological properties of the lipopolysaccharide lipid A from the purple nonsulfur bacterium Rhodopseudomonas palustris strain BisA53 have been determined. This lipid A displays a unique structural feature, with a non-phosphorylated skeleton made up of the tetrasaccharide Manp-α-(1→4)-GlcpN3N-β-1→6-GlcpN3N-α-(1→1)-α-GalpA, and four primary amide-linked 14:0(3-OH) and, as secondary O-acyl substituents, a 16:0 and the very long-chain fatty acid 26:0(25-OAc), appended on the GlcpN3N units.

Endotoxin is recognized as one of the virulence factors of the Bordetella avium bird pathogen, and characterization of its structure and corresponding genomic features are important for an understanding of its role in pathogenicity and for an improved general knowledge of Bordetella spp virulence factors. The structure of the biologically active part of B. avium LPS, lipid A, is described and compared to those of another bird pathogen, opportunistic in humans, Bordetella hinzii, and to that of Bordetella trematum, a human pathogen.
