Background: Congenital bronchial atresia (CBA) is a rare bronchial abnormality. Adult patients with CBA generally do not show any symptoms. Although surgical resection is the first-line treatment, the indication for the surgical intervention is controversial, especially in mildly symptomatic or asymptomatic patients.

Left inguinal dedifferentiated liposarcoma and primary unclassified sarcoma of the left lung as synchronous multiple sarcomas: a case report.

Background: Pulmonary nodules in patients with soft tissue sarcomas are likely pulmonary metastases, whereas synchronous primary pulmonary sarcomas are rare. Without surgery, determining whether a solitary pulmonary nodule is a primary or metastatic nodule is difficult. Herein, we report a rare case of a primary pulmonary sarcoma that presented synchronously with a primary dedifferentiated liposarcoma.

The combination of PD-L1 expression and the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio as a prognostic factor of postoperative recurrence in non-small-cell lung cancer: a retrospective cohort study.

Background: While PD-L1 expression and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) are prognostic biomarkers for lung cancer, few studies have considered their interaction. We hypothesized that the product of PD-L1 expression (tumor proportion score) and the NLR (PD-L1 × NLR) might be a postoperative prognostic marker reflecting the immune microenvironment of lung cancer.

Methods: We analyzed the association between PD-L1 × NLR and postoperative recurrence-free survival in 647 patients with NSCLC using multivariable Cox proportional hazards models.

In sub-Saharan Africa, upland rice cultivation is expanding into rainfed areas endemic to the root parasitic weed Striga hermonthica. We evaluated the Striga resistance of 69 accessions from the World Rice Core Collection (WRC) to estimate the phenotypic diversity within the Oryza sativa species. Pre-attachment resistance was screened based on the germination-inducing activities of the root exudates, while post-attachment resistance was screened through rhizotron evaluation.

To prepare an autologous cell-based product in a cell processing facility, the raw material, which is collected from a patient, must first be shipped from a medical institution to the facility. The quality of this raw material varies depending on the patient, and variations due to transport methods also occur. Because the quality must be uniform and manufacturing processes need to be adjusted to account for these variations, determining the effect of shipment conditions on raw materials is very important for estimating cell manufacturability in the process design.

Here, we report on the mechanism underlying how Striga maintains high transpiration under drought conditions. Impacts of Dams and Global Warming on Fish Biodiversity in the Indo-Burma Hotspot.

Both hydropower dams and global warming pose threats to freshwater fish diversity. While the extent of global warming may be reduced by a shift towards energy generation by large dams in order to reduce fossil-fuel use, such dams profoundly modify riverine habitats. Furthermore, the threats posed by dams and global warming will interact: for example, dams constrain range adjustments by fishes that might compensate for warming temperatures.

Cell therapy and regenerative medicine technologies require strict cell manufacturing procedures to be defined and addressed. Maintenance of the aseptic environment is critical to preclude extrinsic contamination risks, similar to conventional pharmaceutical manufacturing. However, intrinsic contamination risks exist in all cell manufacturing processes owing to the use of cells as the raw materials that cannot be sterilized, thus giving rise to the primary and secondary risks of cell contamination and cross-contamination, respectively.

The orangutan is the world's largest arboreal mammal, and images of the red ape moving through the tropical forest canopy symbolise its typical arboreal behaviour. Records of terrestrial behaviour are scarce and often associated with habitat disturbance. We conducted a large-scale species-level analysis of ground-based camera-trapping data to evaluate the extent to which Bornean orangutans Pongo pygmaeus come down from the trees to travel terrestrially, and whether they are indeed forced to the ground primarily by anthropogenic forest disturbances.

Co-benefits of sustainable forest management in biodiversity conservation and carbon sequestration.

Background: Sustainable forest management (SFM), which has been recently introduced to tropical natural production forests, is beneficial in maintaining timber resources, but information about the co-benefits for biodiversity conservation and carbon sequestration is currently lacking.

Methodology/principal Findings: We estimated the diversity of medium to large-bodied forest-dwelling vertebrates using a heat-sensor camera trapping system and the amount of above-ground, fine-roots, and soil organic carbon by a combination of ground surveys and aerial-imagery interpretations. This research was undertaken both in SFM applied as well as conventionally logged production forests in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo.

Neighborhood aggregation effect and its effective scale on reproductive success in Shorea laxa (Dipterocarpaceae).

This study investigated whether reproductive success is affected by the intensity of neighborhood aggregation of adults in the tropical tree Shorea laxa. We focused on three processes in the early reproductive stages: seed maturation; seed survival (categorizing sound seed, predation by insects and predation by vertebrates) in pre-seed dispersal; and seedling survival in the post-seed dispersal stage. We used a model selection procedure to examine the aggregation effect on reproductive success.

Endovascular trapping for a giant aneurysm of the cervical internal carotid artery: a case report.

We describe a case of giant cervical internal carotid aneurysm successfully treated by endovascular trapping. A 57-year-old woman with a history of maxillary contusion seven years before presented with pharyngeal discomfort during swallowing. MRI revealed a 4 cm mass in the right parapharyngeal space.

A double three-step theory of brain metastasis in mice: the role of the pia mater and matrix metalloproteinases.

The brain is frequently affected by the spread of lung cancer, and haematogenous metastasis is a common route to brain metastasis. We therefore developed an isogenic brain metastasis model of lung cancer to use the Lewis lung carcinoma cell line and analysed dynamics of neoplastic cells after extravasation. Histological analysis revealed two characteristic patterns: metastatic foci exhibiting an angiocentric pattern were designated 'perivascular proliferations'; neoplastic cells infiltrating the brain parenchyma were designated 'invasive proliferations'.

Wide phenotypic variations within a family with SALL1 mutations: Isolated external ear abnormalities to Goldenhar syndrome.

We report on wide phenotypic variations within a family with SALL1 mutations; the elder sister presented with a Townes-Brocks syndrome phenotype including external ear anomalies, preaxial polydactyly, and anteriorly placed anus, whereas the younger sister presented with a phenotype resembling Goldenhar syndrome, including atretic ear canals, mandibular hypoplasia, and right preaxial polydactyly as well as an epibulbar dermoid. The mother had abnormal external ears but was otherwise structurally normal, and the father was asymptomatic. Analysis of the SALL1 gene revealed that both daughters were heterozygous for nonsense mutation 1256T>A (L419X), that is present 5' to the region encoding the first double zinc finger.
