Without surgery, determining whether a solitary pulmonary nodule is a primary or metastatic nodule is difficult. View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: While PD-L1 expression and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) are prognostic biomarkers for lung cancer, few studies have considered their interaction. We hypothesized that the product of PD-L1 expression (tumor proportion score) and the NLR (PD-L1 × NLR) might be a postoperative prognostic marker reflecting the immune microenvironment of lung cancer.
Methods: We analyzed the association between PD-L1 × NLR and postoperative recurrence-free survival in 647 patients with NSCLC using multivariable Cox proportional hazards models.
In sub-Saharan Africa, upland rice cultivation is expanding into rainfed areas endemic to the root parasitic weed Striga hermonthica. We evaluated the Striga resistance of 69 accessions from the World Rice Core Collection (WRC) to estimate the phenotypic diversity within the Oryza sativa species. Pre-attachment resistance was screened based on the germination-inducing activities of the root exudates, while post-attachment resistance was screened through rhizotron evaluation.

Methodology/principal Findings: We estimated the diversity of medium to large-bodied forest-dwelling vertebrates using a heat-sensor camera trapping system and the amount of above-ground, fine-roots, and soil organic carbon by a combination of ground surveys and aerial-imagery interpretations. This research was undertaken both in SFM applied as well as conventionally logged production forests in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo.
This study investigated whether reproductive success is affected by the intensity of neighborhood aggregation of adults in the tropical tree Shorea laxa. We focused on three processes in the early reproductive stages: seed maturation; seed survival (categorizing sound seed, predation by insects and predation by vertebrates) in pre-seed dispersal; and seedling survival in the post-seed dispersal stage. We describe a case of giant cervical internal carotid aneurysm successfully treated by endovascular trapping. A 57-year-old woman with a history of maxillary contusion seven years before presented with pharyngeal discomfort during swallowing. MRI revealed a 4 cm mass in the right parapharyngeal space.

The brain is frequently affected by the spread of lung cancer, and haematogenous metastasis is a common route to brain metastasis. We therefore developed an isogenic brain metastasis model of lung cancer to use the Lewis lung carcinoma cell line and analysed dynamics of neoplastic cells after extravasation. Histological analysis revealed two characteristic patterns: metastatic foci exhibiting an angiocentric pattern were designated 'perivascular proliferations'; neoplastic cells infiltrating the brain parenchyma were designated 'invasive proliferations'.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFWe report on wide phenotypic variations within a family with SALL1 mutations; the elder sister presented with a Townes-Brocks syndrome phenotype including external ear anomalies, preaxial polydactyly, and anteriorly placed anus, whereas the younger sister presented with a phenotype resembling Goldenhar syndrome, including atretic ear canals, mandibular hypoplasia, and right preaxial polydactyly as well as an epibulbar dermoid. The mother had abnormal external ears but was otherwise structurally normal, and the father was asymptomatic. Analysis of the SALL1 gene revealed that both daughters were heterozygous for nonsense mutation 1256T>A (L419X), that is present 5' to the region encoding the first double zinc finger.
