Background: Hyperglycemia increases oxidative stress through the overproduction of reactive oxygen species, which results in an imbalance between free radicals and the antioxidant defense system of the cells. - Certain secondary metabolites (SM), like β-carotene and sanguinarine, have been found to act as competitive inhibitors of P-gp, increasing the accumulation of drugs in cancer cells and effectively reversing multidrug resistance.
- Combining P-gp inhibitors like digitonin with these SM not only enhances their effectiveness but also significantly reduces the expression of the MDR1 gene, which encodes P-gp, leading to improved outcomes in cancer treatment.
