Solid lipid nanoparticles (SLNs) have the advantages of a cell-specific delivery and sustained release of hydrophobic drugs that can be exploited against infectious diseases. The topical delivery of hydrophobic drugs needs pharmaceutical strategies to enhance drug permeation, which is a challenge faced by conventional formulations containing a drug suspended in gel, creams or ointments. We report the fabrication and optimization of SLNs with sulconazole (SCZ) as a model hydrophobic drug and then a formulation of an SLN-based topical gel against fungal infections.

Article Synopsis
  • A 60-year-old man with an inguinal hernia was found to have a right pelvic kidney and ureter in the hernial sac, but was asymptomatic with normal kidney function.
  • A renogram indicated partial obstruction, leading to a multi-disciplinary discussion where a ureteric stent was recommended for surgical assistance.
  • The surgery was successful, with the stent removed six weeks later, and follow-up tests confirmed normal kidney function.

  • High on-treatment platelet reactivity (HOPR) in post-PCI patients increases the risk of cardiovascular events, leading to a study on intensified dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT).
  • 434 patients with HOPR were randomized to receive intensified therapy (different combinations of clopidogrel and aspirin) for 1 month versus standard therapy (clopidogrel 75 mg).
  • The results showed that the intensified therapy significantly reduced the rate of persistent HOPR and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) at both 1 and 12 months, without a significant increase in bleeding risks.

While research suggests that sexism is associated with college women's hazardous alcohol use, few studies have investigated the psychological factors that underlie the association between sexism and alcohol-related problems. Thus, the purpose of the present study was to examine the direct and indirect effect of gender-relevant sociocultural factors, including sexism, self-objectification, and empowerment, on college women's alcohol-related problems through drinking to cope. 450 women attending a large public university completed a cross-sectional survey that assessed these gender-relevant sociocultural factors and alcohol-related outcomes.

Covid-19 has given one positive perspective to look at our planet earth in terms of reducing the air and noise pollution thus improving the environmental conditions globally. This positive outcome of pandemic has given the indication that the future of energy belong to green energy and one of the emerging source of green energy is Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). LIBs are the backbone of the electric vehicles but there are some major issues faced by the them like poor thermal performance, thermal runaway, fire hazards and faster rate of discharge under low and high temperature environment,.

Intestinal obstruction secondary to cocoon formation is not common. We report a case of a patient who had presented with abdominal pain and distension accompanied by vomiting. Investigations, laparotomy and histology together revealed primary peritoneal carcinoma as the cause of the patient's symptoms.

With the advent of high throughput sequencing and high resolution transcriptomic technologies, there exists today an unprecedented opportunity to understand gene regulation at a quantitative level. State of the art models of the relationship between regulatory sequence and gene expression have shown great promise, but also suffer from some major shortcomings. In this paper, we identify and address methodological challenges pertaining to quantitative modeling of gene expression from sequence, and test our models on the anterior-posterior patterning system in the Drosophila embryo.

We report a case of a sixty year old man with a mycotic infra-renal abdominal aortic aneurysm complicated by a left psoas abscess. After treatment with parenteral antibiotics he underwent early aortic reconstruction with an in-situ prosthetic graft wrapped in an omental pedicle. Mycotic abdominal aortic aneurysms can be treated in this way despite the potential for graft infection from persisting retroperitoneal sepsis.

Management of rectal cancer has evolved over the years. In this condition preoperative investigations assist in deciding the optimal treatment. The relation of the tumor edge to the circumferential margin (CRM) is an important factor in deciding the need for neoadjuvant treatment and determines the prognosis.

Management of vaginal prolapse in the elderly lacks a uniform consensus and continues to remain challenging. The authors report a case of an elderly lady who presented with a spontaneous vaginal evisceration. She had a long-standing vaginal prolapse being controlled by a shelf pessary, which, in her case became displaced 2 weeks prior to admission.

The authors report a case of a 79-year-old female who presented with signs and symptoms of acute cholecystitis. She was taken to theatre within 24 h of acute admission to undergo laparoscopic cholecystectomy. The gallbladder was found to have undergone torsion upon its mesentery leading to its infarction and necrosis.

Article Synopsis
  • The authors conducted a study of 710 laparoscopic hernia repairs over 10 years and encountered a rare case of delayed mesh infection 7 years after the surgery.
  • A 56-year-old patient experienced diarrhea and swelling in the right side of the abdomen, leading to imaging that showed a mesh in a fluid-filled cavity.
  • Upon surgical exploration, 550 ml of pus was found in the cavity alongside the mesh, which was subsequently removed, and the patient recovered well post-surgery.

Mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) is a type of extra nodal malignant lymphoma seen in organs such as the stomach, thyroid and salivary glands. Furthermore, occurrence of colorectal MALT lymphoma is extremely rare. We report a case of a solitary rectal MALT lymphoma treated by surgical resection and radiotherapy.

This study was undertaken to identify and characterize bacterial isolates obtained simultaneously from dead fish samples during a massive fish kill in Kuwait Bay and sewage-water samples running into Kuwait Bay using conventional and molecular techniques. Of the 71 bacterial isolates studied; 66 were recovered from 7 different fish species and 5 strains were isolated from sewage samples. The species-specific identity of the isolates was established by phenotypic characteristics and by PCR amplification of 16S rRNA by using Streptococcus agalactiae-specific primers.

Background: Despite important advances in the therapy of acute myeloid leukemia (AML), the majority of patients die of their disease, unless bone marrow transplantation (BMT) is done. Infection and hemorrhage are still the major causes of mortality in AML patients. Progress in therapy and supportive care has led to gradual improvement in the overall results, but further improvements are still needed.

Introduction: The role of laparoscopic ultrasound (LUS) during staging laparoscopy for pancreatic cancers is established but remains debatable in evaluating oesophagogastric cancers.

Methods: A retrospective consecutive case series consisting of patients undergoing staging laparoscopy in two centres (centre A and B) was carried out over a 5-year period (2000-2005). Patients in centre B underwent LUS following laparoscopic assessment using a 7.

Purpose: The bladder or Boari flap is a useful technique for ureteroneocystostomy when the distal ureter is too short to reach the bladder without undue tension. We report our experience with laparoscopic Boari flap ureteroneocystostomy in the chronic porcine model.

Materials And Methods: Six female farm pigs underwent unilateral laparoscopic Boari bladder flap ureteroneocystostomy.
