Developing nonenzymatic chemistry that is nontoxic to microbial organisms creates the potential to integrate synthetic chemistry with metabolism and offers new remediation strategies. Chlorinated organic compounds known to bioaccumulate and cause harmful environmental impact can be converted into less damaging derivatives through hydrodehalogenation. The hydrodechlorination of substituted aryl chlorides using Pd/C and ammonium formate in biological media under physiological conditions (neutral pH, moderate temperature, and ambient pressure) is reported.

To grow more robust cardiac tissue for implantation in vivo, strategies to improve survival of implanted stem cells are required. Here we report the protective effects of hypoxic preconditioning (HPC) and identify mechanisms for improving survival of adipose-derived stem cells (ASC) in vitro. Human ASC were preconditioned for 24 h with hypoxia and then exposed to simulated ischemia for a further 24 h.

There are various treatment options available, but the growing field of regenerative therapy offers promise to restore or replace tissue lost in those with either congenital or acquired cardiac defects. In this study, we evaluated cardiomyogenic differentiation protocols using a DNA demethylating agent 5-azacytidine (5-aza), a modified cardiomyogenic medium (MCM), a histone deacetylase inhibitor trichostatin A (TSA) and co-culture with neonatal rat cardiomyocytes. 5-aza treatment reduced both cardiac actin and TropT mRNA expression.
