Speeding is a prevalent and complex risky behavior that can be affected by many factors. Understanding how drivers speed is important for developing countermeasures, especially as new automation features emerge. The current study seeks to identify and describe types of real-world speeding behaviors with and without the use of partial-automation.

Article Synopsis
  • Current Pedestrian Automatic Emergency Braking (P-AEB) systems often rely on radar and cameras, which can have limited fields of view (FOV), potentially missing pedestrians; advanced sensors like LiDAR may improve detection with wider FOVs.
  • A study used simulations of vehicle-pedestrian crashes to examine how varying FOV (from ±10° to ±90°) and sensor range (from 25 to 100 m) affected the effectiveness of P-AEB systems in preventing collisions.
  • Results indicated that while sensor range had minimal impact on performance, FOV significantly influenced crash avoidance, with wider FOVs capable of avoiding up to 91-92% of collisions, resulting in lower average impact speeds when crashes

Article Synopsis
  • - The research aims to evaluate how beneficial automated emergency braking (AEB) systems with pedestrian detection would be for pedestrians if installed in all U.S. vehicles, using real-world collision data for analysis.
  • - The study modeled different AEB systems and compared the impact speeds of vehicles with and without these systems, finding that AEB significantly reduces the risk of pedestrian fatalities and serious injuries (MAIS 3+).
  • - The most effective AEB system, which initiates braking when a collision is imminent, could lower fatality risk by 84-87% and injury risk by 83-87%, especially when combined with driver braking actions.
