Chronic diseases usually require repetitive dosing. Depending on factors such as dosing frequency, mode of administration, and associated costs this can result in poor patient compliance. A better alternative involves using drug delivery systems to reduce the frequency of dosing and extend drug release.

Background: The diagnosis of a sports-related concussion (SRC) relies heavily on self-report from the athlete; therefore, the true percentage of those sustaining an SRC is not readily known. Concussed athletes are at higher risk for permanent or more catastrophic injury, especially without a diagnosis. Limited research has been done to determine the factors associated with concussion reporting behaviors in high school athletes.

A visuocentric bias has dominated the literature on spatial navigation and reorientation. Studies on visually accessed environments indicate that, during reorientation, human and non-human animals encode the geometric shape of the environment, even if this information is unnecessary and insufficient for the task. In an attempt to extend our limited knowledge on the similarities and differences between visual and non-visual navigation, here we examined whether the same phenomenon would be observed during auditory-guided reorientation.

Trans-acting acyltransferases (trans-ATs) are standalone enzymes that select and deliver extender units to polyketide synthase assembly lines. Accordingly, there is interest in leveraging trans-ATs as tools to regioselectively diversify polyketide structures. Yet, little is known regarding the extender unit and acyl carrier protein (ACP) specificity of trans-ATs, particularly those that utilize unusual ACP-linked extender units.

The North American river otter (Lontra canadensis) is a biomonitor for organohalogenated compounds (OHCs) associated with a wide range of deleterious health effects in wildlife and humans. We determined concentrations of twenty OHCs in livers of 23 river otters salvaged by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources from 2009 to 2011, determined sex-dependent distribution of OHCs, and compared our results to the reported concentrations of four OHCs in Illinois river otters from 1984 to 1989. Since these contaminants have been banned for over 30 years, we predicted smaller mean concentrations than those previously reported in Illinois otters.
