Background: Dysphagia (difficulty swallowing) is a common morbidity resulting from the treatment of head-and-neck squamous-cell carcinoma (HNSCC) due to surgery and chemoradiation. Transoral robotic surgery (TORS) is a minimally invasive surgical technique for the management of HNSCC, which ideally avoids many of the known complications of open surgery. Research describing physiologic swallowing impairment after surgery using videofluoroscopy is lacking.

Methods: The Merative Marketscan Commercial Claims and Encounters database was retrospectively analyzed for hepatitis A-related inpatient, outpatient, and emergency department (ED) claims from January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2018. We calculated the hepatitis A incidence proportion per 100,000 enrollees, healthcare resource utilization, and costs (in 2020 USD).

Our multicenter, medical chart review, cost-of-illness study used a micro-costing approach to evaluate the economic burden associated with varicella in Bangkok, Thailand, from a societal perspective. We reviewed medical charts of adults and children with a primary diagnosis of varicella (2014-2018) from 4 hospitals in Bangkok. Reported healthcare resource utilization and missed school or workdays were extracted from medical charts.

Practice Trends in Plastic Hand Surgery: An Evaluation of Cases in the TOPS Database.

Background: Previous studies have sought to outline the clinical practice of hand surgeons with plastic surgery training backgrounds. Still, minimal data exist characterizing the scope of hand surgery among plastic surgeons, regardless of the subspecialty fellowship training.

Methods: All hand procedures logged in the Tracking Operations and Outcomes for Plastic Surgeons (TOPS) database from 2002 to 2016 were identified by the Common Procedural Technology (CPT) code and/or "upper extremity" anatomic classification.

The clinical and economic costs associated with regional disparities in varicella vaccine coverage in Italy over 50 years (2020-2070).

Italy implemented two-dose universal varicella vaccination (UVV) regionally from 2003 to 2013 and nationally from 2017 onwards. Our objective was to analyze regional disparities in varicella outcomes resulting from disparities in vaccine coverage rates (VCRs) projected over a 50-year time-horizon (2020-2070). A previously published dynamic transmission model was updated to quantify the potential public health impact of the UVV program in Italy at the national and regional levels.

Mitochondrial alternative oxidase (AOX) is an important protein that can help in regulating reactive oxygen species and nitric oxide in plants. The role of AOX in regulation of nitro-oxidative stress in chickpea is not known. Using germinating chickpea as a model system, we investigated the role of AOX in nitro-oxidative stress tolerance.

A Unique Case of Coexisting Anaplasmosis and Blastomycosis.

Introduction: In presenting this case of tick-borne illness in a patient with known disseminated blastomycosis, we aim to discuss the clinical reasoning and decision-making process when treating a septic presentation in a complex patient with multiple exposures and risk factors, from identifying and addressing the most devastating differentials to selecting appropriate empiric anti-infective regimens.

Case Presentation: We present the case of a 60-year-old male with a medical history of diastolic heart failure, cirrhosis, sarcoidosis, hypertension, splenectomy, and recently diagnosed disseminated blastomycosis, who developed sepsis following a recent tick exposure.

Discussion: While a review of the literature revealed a paucity of cases of coexisting fungal and tick-borne illness, each is independently well-studied.

Hypoxia occurs when oxygen levels fall below the levels required for mitochondria to support respiration. Regulated hypoxia is associated with quiescence, particularly in storage organs (seeds) and stem cell niches. In contrast, environmentally induced hypoxia poses significant challenges for metabolically active cells that are adapted to aerobic respiration.

Convolutional LSTM model for cine image prediction of abdominal motion.

In this study, we tackle the challenge of latency in magnetic resonance linear accelerator (MR-Linac) systems, which compromises target coverage accuracy in gated real-time radiotherapy. Our focus is on enhancing motion prediction precision in abdominal organs to address this issue. We developed a convolutional long short-term memory (convLSTM) model, utilizing 2D cine magnetic resonance (cine-MR) imaging for this purpose.

Objective: To understand the preferences of healthcare providers (HCPs) in Switzerland for pediatric hexavalent vaccine attributes.

Methods: A discrete-choice experiment included a series of choices between 2 hypothetical pediatric hexavalent vaccines with varying attributes: device type (including preparation time and risk of dosage errors), proportion of infants seroprotected against type b (Hib) at 11-12 months (pre-booster), packaging size, years on the market, and the thermostability at room temperature. Odds ratios (ORs) and conditional relative attribute importance (CRAI) were calculated using random-parameters logit.

Study of Involuntary Limb Movements as a Presenting Feature in Nonketotic Hyperglycemia.

Background Hyperglycaemia can rarely manifest as hemichorea/hemiballismus, which subsides with adequate control of blood sugar. Our study accounted for patients with abnormal, involuntary limb movements with high blood sugar, excluding other conditions leading to or mimicking such a clinical appearance. It is very important to identify such patients as chorea secondary to an underlying etiology like hyperglycemia, which can be cured.
