Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on how the age of Plasmodium falciparum sporozoites (SPZ) in mosquitoes affects their infectivity and the immune response they trigger in humans, specifically examining SPZ that are 14, 17, and 20 days old.* -
  • Results indicated that while the number and viability of SPZ did not change with age, their motility decreased significantly over time, and the infectivity of SPZ dropped notably from 14 to 20 days.* -
  • Additionally, immune responses showed that macrophages were more effective at taking up SPZ at 14 days, resulting in higher expression of inflammatory markers compared to those that were 20 days old.*

Prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA) PET is used to select patients with recurrent prostate cancer for metastasis-directed therapy. A surgical approach can be achieved through radioguided surgery (RGS), using a Drop-In γ-probe that traces lesions that accumulate the radioactive signal. With the aim of guiding patient selection for salvage surgery, we studied the correlation between the SUV of lesions on preoperative PSMA PET/CT and their intraoperative counts/s measured using the Drop-In γ-probe.

Background: The occurrence of accidental nerve damage during surgery and the increasing application of image guidance during head-and-neck surgery have highlighted the need for molecular targeted nerve-sparing interventions. The implementation of such interventions relies on the availability of nerve-specific tracers. In this paper, we describe the development of a truncated peptide that has an optimized affinity for protein zero (P0), the most abundant protein in myelin.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how different navigational strategies using ultrasound and pre-interventional imaging improve needle placement in liver interventions for both novice and expert users.
  • Three exercises were conducted with a custom biopsy phantom, contrasting needle guidance methods: standard ultrasound (US), ultrasound with image registration (US + Reg), and ultrasound with both registration and needle navigation (US + Reg + Nav).
  • Kinematic analysis revealed novices benefited most from advanced strategies (improved performance scores), while experts had reduced performance with the most advanced method, highlighting a differential impact based on experience level.

Article Synopsis
  • This study looks at a new way to find cancer in the lymph nodes during surgery using a special magnetic imaging system called fhMPI.
  • The researchers combined this magnetic method with a glowing dye to help see where the particles are.
  • Results showed it works well in tests and during pig surgeries, helping doctors get better images and confirm exactly where the cancer might be.

Introduction: Nuclear medicine has a crucial role in interventional strategies where a combination between the increasing use of targeted radiotracers and intraprocedural detection modalities enable novel, but often complex, targeted procedures in both the fields of interventional radiology and surgery. 3D navigation approaches could assist the interventional radiologist or surgeon in such complex procedures.

Evidence Acquisition: This review aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of the current application of computer-assisted navigation strategies based on nuclear imaging to assist in interventional radiology and image-guided surgery.

Purpose: Decision-making and dexterity, features that become increasingly relevant in (robot-assisted) minimally invasive surgery, are considered key components in improving the surgical accuracy. Recently, DROP-IN gamma probes were introduced to facilitate radioguided robotic surgery. We now studied if robotic DROP-IN radioguidance can be further improved using tethered Click-On designs that integrate gamma detection onto the robotic instruments themselves.

With translation of the Drop-In γ-probe, radioguidance has advanced into laparoscopic robot-assisted surgery. Global-positioning-system-like navigation can further enhance the symbiosis between nuclear medicine and surgery. Therefore, we developed a fluorescence-video-based tracking method that integrates the Drop-In with navigated robotic surgery.
