Defining the Histologic Support Structures of the Nasal Ala and Soft Triangle: Toward Understanding the Cause of Iatrogenic Alar Retraction.

Background: As rhinoplasty techniques have evolved to more extensive dissections, the incidence of iatrogenic deformities, such as alar rim retraction, has risen. Its mechanism is presently unknown. This study examined the microscopic anatomy of the nasal ala to define architectural support elements at the histologic level to determine why rhinoplasty dissection creates such deformities.

Role of CTA in Women with Abdominal Scars Undergoing DIEP Breast Reconstruction: Review of 1,187 Flaps.

Background:  This study examines the effect of prior abdominal surgery on flap, donor-site, and overall complications in women undergoing deep inferior epigastric artery perforator (DIEP) flap breast reconstruction and assesses whether preoperative computed tomography angiography (CTA) affects outcomes.

Methods:  All DIEP flaps performed at our institution between 2004 and 2015 were identified retrospectively. Patients were stratified based on a history of prior abdominal surgery and whether or not they underwent a preoperative CTA.

Two-stage prosthetic breast reconstruction with latissimus flap: Prepectoral versus subpectoral approach.

Background: Use of latissimus flap in prosthetic breast reconstruction after mastectomy is an established approach, particularly in patients who have failed breast-conserving therapy. This study presents a comparison of the prepectoral and the subpectoral approach for two-stage prosthetic breast reconstruction with a latissimus flap.

Methods: A retrospective review of outcomes and complications was completed between the prepectoral group (n = 33 patients, 50 reconstructed breasts) and the subpectoral group (n = 22 patients, 36 reconstructed breasts).

Evaluating Outcomes Following Open Fractures of the Distal Radius.

Purpose: A paucity of evidence exists regarding the optimal treatment of open fractures of the distal radius. The purpose of this study was to compare short-term complication rates between various treatment options following open fractures of the distal radius.

Methods: We performed a retrospective review of all open fractures of the distal radius at a single level 1 trauma center over a 10-year period.

A Comparative Multimetric Assessment of English and Spanish Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Materials.

Background: Spanish-speaking Hispanics living in the United States utilize the internet as a primary means to obtain health information. Accurate, accessible information is important for English speakers; however, it could have even greater utility for Spanish speakers who have lower health literacy levels. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare online English and Spanish carpal tunnel surgery materials provided by using a multimetric approach.

Wieacker-Wolff syndrome with associated cleft palate in a female case.

Wieacker-Wolff syndrome is a rare congenital syndrome with few reported cases in the current literature. It is traditionally described in males as an X-linked recessive disorder associated with congenital contractures of the feet, progressive neurologic muscular atrophy, and intellectual delay caused by ZC4H2 mutations. The purpose of this paper is to present a female individual with a classic phenotype and cleft palate, a previously undescribed finding in this syndrome.
