Introduction: Triorchidism is a rare anomaly whose management raised considerable discussion. Several factors must be considered, including the patient's age, the testes location, their functional status, and the accessibility and compliance for follow-up. We present a case of triorchidism diagnosed incidentally during a routine hernioplasty procedure, serving educational and informative purposes.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to examine the clinical and epidemiological data regarding impaired functional outcomes, specifically low anterior resection syndrome (LARS), following rectal surgery for tumors.
  • It involved a retrospective analysis of 42 patients treated between 2009 and 2021, revealing that approximately 50% developed LARS, with major LARS occurring in 14 patients.
  • The researchers identified age and advanced tumor stage (pT3T4) as independent risk factors for major LARS, suggesting that these factors should be considered in managing rectal cancer patients.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the impact of omentoplasty (OP) after surgery for hepatic cystic echinococcosis on infection and complications, finding lower rates of deep organ space/surgical site infections (OS/SSI) with OP compared to external tube drainage (ETD).
  • The review analyzed eight studies, identifying significant differences in morbidity rates, leading to fewer infections and complications with OP, while showing no notable differences in mortality and recurrence rates between the two methods.
  • Overall, the findings suggest that omentoplasty could be a more effective approach than external tube drainage for reducing post-operative complications in patients undergoing surgery for hepatic cystic echinococcosis.

Introduction: Self-directed learning digital tool aims to enable students to acquire skills in an autonomous way. The aim of this work was to compare a self-directed learning digital tool in non-traumatic abdominal emergencies with tutorials under the guidance of the educator in two parallel groups of second-year of second-cycle of medical students selected by means of a draw.

Methods: We performed a controlled trial with draw comparing the self-directed learning digital tool and tutorials under the guidance of a teacher.

Background: Foot ulcers are diabetes-related complications which occur in 10%-25% in diabetic patients. They are an important cause of morbidity and mortality in diabetes. This retrospective study aimed to assess, using an administrative database, the morbidity and the mortality risk of infected diabetic ulcers.

Background: Major amputation of the lower limb is defined by a leg or thigh amputation. The aim of our work was identifying predictive factors for lower limb major amputation in patients with diabetes admitted on for foot lesions through using an administrative data base.

Methods: It was a retrospective study ranging from June 1st, 2008 to December 31st, 2011, which included all the patients admitted on for an infected diabetic foot to the surgery unit B of Charles Nicolle hospital in Tunis.

Background: The ideal way to show treatment effectiveness is through randomized controlled trials the 'gold standard' in evidence-based surgery. Indeed, not all surgical studies can be designed as randomized trials, sometimes for ethical and otherwise, for practical reasons. This article aimed to compare laparoscopic cholecystectomy to open cholecystectomy, according to data from an administrative database, managed by a propensity matched analysis.

Selective extraction of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH) without structural modification of the Natural Organic Matter (NOM) from a heavily contaminated sediment was investigated using various solvents mixtures. Structural modification of the NOM was monitored after extraction using 3D-fluorescence spectroscopy. Better results were obtained with a 15-h PAH extraction under reflux with a dichloromethane/cyclohexane 20/80 mixture.
