Factors Associated With Acute Kidney Injury After Cardiopulmonary Bypass in Children.

Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common complication after cardiovascular surgery in children, noted in approximately 40% of children undergoing cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). We sought to determine the risk factors including inflammatory and vascular endothelial markers associated with AKI in children undergoing cardiac surgery.

Recently, interest has increased in using bio-additives, herbs, and their extracts as feed additives because of their potential role in improving chick's health and productivity, especially during stress. Thus, our aim in this study is to examine whether nutritional supplementation (probiotics and clove essential oils) will help mitigate the negative effect of heat stress on the bird by modifying the microbial content, boosting immunity, oxidative status, metabolic, and growth. In this study, three hundred one-day-old broiler chicks (Ross 308) were fed the following experimental diet: (CON) basal diet (control diet); (CEO) CON with clove essential oils (300 mg/kg); (PRO) CON with probiotics (2 g/kg); (PC) CON with probiotics and clove essential oils.

The use of lung ultrasound in COVID-19.

This review article addresses the role of lung ultrasound in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) for diagnosis and disease management. As a simple imaging procedure, lung ultrasound contributes to the early identification of patients with clinical conditions suggestive of COVID-19, supports decisions about hospital admission and informs therapeutic strategy. It can be performed in various clinical settings (primary care facilities, emergency departments, hospital wards, intensive care units), but also in outpatient settings using portable devices.

The Physical and Chemical Characteristics of Seeds Oil of Local Sudanese Pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata Duchesne).

This study aimed to evaluate the physical and chemical properties of pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata Duchesne) seed oil obtained from local Sudanese pumpkins. Three different genotypes of the pumpkin fruits as round, elongated and bell shapes were collected from Elgadarif State, Sudan. The oil's seeds' physical and chemical characteristics were determined by viscosity, specific gravity, refractive index, oil content peroxide value, acid value, saponification, unsaponifiable, pH, iodine value, total polyphenols and fatty acid content.

Induction of Systemic Resistance in Maize and Antibiofilm Activity of Surfactin From MS20.

Surfactin lipopeptide is an eco-friendly microbially synthesized bioproduct that holds considerable potential in therapeutics (antibiofilm) as well as in agriculture (antifungal). In the present study, production of surfactin by a marine strain MS20 was carried out, followed by physico-chemical characterization, anti-biofilm activity, plant growth promotion, and quantitative Reverse Transcriptase-Polymerase Chain Reaction (q RT-PCR) studies. From the results, it was inferred that MS20 was found to produce biosurfactant (3,300 mg L) under optimized conditions.

The potential value of plasma Circ-ITCH in hepatocellular carcinoma patients with current hepatitis C virus infection.

Antenatal Doppler ultrasound implementation in a rural sub-Saharan African setting: exploring the perspectives of women and healthcare providers.

Background: The World Health Organization recommends research to evaluate the effects of a single third trimester Doppler ultrasound examination on preventable deaths in unselected-risk pregnancies, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where the evidence base is scarce. While evaluating such technologies, researchers often ignore women and health care provider perspectives. This study explored the views and experiences of women and healthcare providers regarding the use of advanced ultrasound technology to optimize the health of mothers and their babies in a rural community in mid-western Uganda.

The functional nutritional and regulatory activities of calcium supplementation from eggshell for obesity disorders management.

The present study was to investigate the effective role of renewable sources of Ca from eggshell (ES) with different doses to restrict obesity disorders. Rats were classified as follows, G : normal diet for 26 weeks; G : high-fat diet (HFD) for 26 weeks; G , G , and G were supplemented with HFD for 16 weeks and treated with 7.2 g Ca ES/Kg rat chow, 18 g Ca ES/Kg rat chow, and 2% diet containing fat (DCF), respectively, for the remaining 10 weeks.

Long-term outcomes of the hip shelf arthroplasty in adolescents and adults with residual hip dysplasia: a systematic review.

Background and purpose - The shelf arthroplasty was the regular treatment for residual hip dysplasia before it was substituted by the peri-acetabular osteotomy. Yet, evidence regarding the survival of shelf arthroplasty surgery has never been systematically documented. Hence, we investigated the survival time of the shelf procedure until revision to THA in patients with primary hip dysplasia.

Effects of gamma-irradiation on antibiotic resistance and diagnostic molecular markers of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in Egyptian cancer patients.

This in-vitro study aimed to assess in 120 [40 community-acquired (CA-MRSA) & 80 hospital-acquired (HA-MRSA)] isolates from cancer patients whether the transmissible staphylococcal cassette chromosome (SCC) typing, and the Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL) virulence genes detection could be employed as tools for molecular diagnostic purposes to distinguish both methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) categories in radiotherapy treated cancer patients. SCC typing was determined by the combination of the type of the cassette chromosome recombinase genes () gene complex and the class of the methicillin resistance () gene complex. Besides, a rapid slide latex agglutination test (LAT) and antibiotic resistance spectrum determination before and after irradiation were performed.

Vaccination timeliness and associated factors among preterm infants at a tertiary hospital in Uganda.

Background: Preterm infants are at increased risk of infections including vaccine preventable diseases. Therefore, timely vaccination is crucial to ensure adequate disease protection. Information on whether preterm infants are vaccinated according to chronological age as recommended is limited in low-income countries.

Measurement error of mean sac diameter and crown-rump length among pregnant women at Mulago hospital, Uganda.

Background: Ultrasonography is essential in the prenatal diagnosis and care for the pregnant mothers. However, the measurements obtained often contain a small percentage of unavoidable error that may have serious clinical implications if substantial. We therefore evaluated the level of intra and inter-observer error in measuring mean sac diameter (MSD) and crown-rump length (CRL) in women between 6 and 10 weeks' gestation at Mulago hospital.

Expression of CD163 in hereditary gingival fibromatosis: A possible association with TGF-β1.

Background: Although several studies have discussed some of the molecular and cellular changes associated with hereditary gingival fibromatosis (HGF), its pathogenesis is still largely unclear. This study was directed to detect and outline the degree of relationship between the immunophenotyped macrophages (M2) expressing CD163 and TGF-β1 in patients with gingival overgrowth due to HGF.

Methods: Biopsies from 20 patients suffering from HGF and 20 normal control subjects were harvested, histologically and immunohistochemically stained then, analyzed and statistically compared and correlated for CD163 immunoexpression and TGF-β1.

Roselle is cardioprotective in diet-induced obesity rat model with myocardial infarction.
