The estimation of crop evapotranspiration (ETc) is crucial for irrigation water management, especially in arid regions. This can be particularly relevant in the Po Valley (Italy), where arable lands suffer from drought damages on an annual basis, causing drastic crop yield losses. This study presents a novel approach for vegetation-based estimation of crop evapotranspiration (ETc) for maize.

Article Synopsis
  • The rising prevalence of food allergies emphasizes the need for new prevention methods, effective treatments, and reliable risk assessment tools due to the varying degrees of allergen digestion in individuals.
  • Recent research highlights the importance of understanding the digestive system and its impact on food allergens, focusing on how food processing and digestion contribute to allergen stability.
  • It is noted that allergen digestibility is influenced by food processing, digestive conditions, and the overall food matrix, making it difficult to predict allergen immunogenicity based solely on protein stability.

Frailty is a dynamic clinical condition characterized by the reduction of interconnections among different psychobiological domains, which leads to a homeostatic vulnerability. The association between physical frailty and cognitive dysfunctions is a possible predictor of poor prognosis in patients with neurodegenerative disorders. However, this construct has not been fully analyzed by a multidimensional neuropsychogeriatric assessment matched with multimodal neuroimaging methods in patients with behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD).

Aim: The aim of this review was to analyze the discontinuation rates during long-term treatment with second-generation antipsychotic long-acting injection (SGA-LAI) in adults with either schizophrenia spectrum or bipolar disorders.

Methods: A systematic search (PubMed, Scopus, and the Cochrane Library) of studies published in English (1 January 2001-12 October 2018) identified 1214 abstracts, which were analyzed independently by the author and two colleagues. Studies were retrieved and reviewed if they reported primary data on the discontinuation rate before the study end during treatment lasting ≥36 weeks.

The first aim of this article is to analyze the risk/benefit ratio of using psychotropic drugs approved in some countries for treating fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) during pregnancy. Assessing the effectiveness of non-pharmacological interventions is the second scope of this article, in order to help clinicians to manage FMS in pregnancy in those countries were no drugs are approved for treating the disease. Following the PRISMA guidelines for systematic reviews, a literature search was conducted on PubMed and Google Scholar.

Background It has been recently suggested that second-generation antipsychotic long-acting injection (SGA-LAIs) are underutilized in clinical practice, despite that their costs significantly impact on national health system budgets. Hence, an updated analysis of safety data shown by SGA-LAIs may contribute to clarify their role in clinical practice. Materials and methods English-language, peer-reviewed articles reporting updated, primary findings on the SGA-LAI safety were identified (updated through an electronic search of five databases - PubMed, EMBASE, PsycInfo, DARE and the Cochrane Library).

The term frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) describes a spectrum of neurodegenerative disorders associated with deposition of misfolded proteins in the frontal and temporal lobes. Up to 40% of FTLD patients reports a family history of neurodegeneration, and approximately 1/3 of familial cases shows an autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance of the phenotype. Over the past two decades, several causative and susceptibility genes for FTLD have been discovered, supporting the notion that genetic factors are important contributors to the disease processes.

The clinical utilization of psychotropic medications in pregnant women represents a significant challenge. Indeed, the risks of untreated severe mental disorders, particularly when complicated by substance-related and addictive disorders, must be carefully balanced against the potential teratogenic risks of pharmacological treatment. In this case, an alcohol addict, diagnosed with borderline personality disorder was treated successfully with several classes of psychotropic agents during the first trimester.

Until 2005, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), the class of antidepressants most frequently used in clinical practice, had been deemed devoid of any teratogenic effects. However, in recent years several concerns have been raised about their reproductive safety, including: disturbed fetal development, increased rates of congenital anomalies, increased risks of neonatal complications, neuro-motor delay and even autism. Specific concerns are also arising about the safety of SSRIs for infants breastfed by mothers who take such medications in puerperium.
