Objective: The presence of micropapillary and solid adenocarcinoma patterns leads to a worse survival and a significantly higher tendency to recur. This study aims to assess the impact of pT descriptor combined with the presence of high-grade components on long-term outcomes in early-stage lung adenocarcinomas.

Methods: We retrospectively collected data of consecutive resected pT1-T3N0 lung adenocarcinoma from nine European Thoracic Centers.

Objectives: Lung cancer is increasingly diagnosed as a second cancer. Our goal was to analyse the characteristics and outcomes of early-stage resected lung adenocarcinomas in patients with previous cancers (PC) and correlations with adenocarcinoma subtypes.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed data of patients radically operated on for stage I-II lung adenocarcinoma in 9 thoracic surgery departments between 2014 and 2017.

Objective: To evaluate the influence of lung adenocarcinoma second predominant pattern on the maximal standard uptake value (SUVmax) and its prognostic effect in different histologic groups.

Methods: We retrospectively collected surgically resected pathologic stage I and II lung adenocarcinoma from nine European institutions. Only patients who underwent preoperative PET-CT and with available information regarding SUVmax of T (SUVmaxT) and N1 (SUVmaxN1) component were included.

Background And Objectives: Adenocarcinoma patterns could be grouped based on clinical behaviors: low- (lepidic), intermediate- (papillary or acinar), and high-grade (micropapillary and solid). We analyzed the impact of the second predominant pattern (SPP) on disease-free survival (DFS).

Methods: We retrospectively collected data of surgically resected stage I and II adenocarcinoma.

Well-differentiated thyroid cancer (WDTC) is characterized by favorable disease course and excellent survival. However, some histologic subtypes, known as aggressive histologic variants (AHVs), present a more aggressive behavior than conventional WDTC. The aim of this study was to evaluate the pattern of nodal involvement and factors influencing prognosis in N1b patients with AHVs.

We herein report a case of a 43-year-old man with a right 8th-rib bone tumor exhibiting features of malignancy at CT-scan. Considering that a SPECT/CT with Tc-MDP showed solitary intense radio-tracer uptake and the inconclusive results from a fine-needle biopsy, surgical en bloc tumor resection was performed. Pathologic analysis revealed a well-limited benign bone lesion ("fibrous rib dysplasia") composed by a cellular fibrous proliferation.

Background: Neck dissection is considered the treatment of choice in patients with lateral neck metastases from well-differentiated thyroid cancer.

Methods: A multicenter, retrospective review of patients who underwent therapeutic lateral neck dissection for well-differentiated thyroid carcinoma was carried out.

Results: The study included a total of 405 lateral neck dissections performed in 352 patients; 197 women (56%) and 155 men (44%).

The finding of collections of macrophages/histiocytes in lung biopsy and bronchoalveolar lavage is relatively common in routine practice. This morphological feature in itself is pathological, but the exact clinical significance and underlying disease should be evaluated together with clinical data, functional respiratory and laboratory tests and imaging studies.Morphological characteristics of macrophages and their distribution along the different pulmonary structures should be examined carefully by pathologists.

Here we describe a 77-year-old man with a solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura showing increasing tracer uptake at Ga-DOTATOC PET/CT, demonstrating that solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura may overexpress somatostatin receptors, therefore mimicking neuroendocrine tumors at somatostatin receptor PET/CT.

Objective: Data on the presence of varicella-zoster virus (VZV) in temporal arteries of patients with giant cell arteritis (GCA) are controversial. We analyzed VZV infection in temporal arteries from Italian patients with temporal artery biopsy (TAB)-positive GCA, TAB-negative GCA, and controls.

Methods: A total of 79 formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) TABs performed between 2009 and 2012 at a single institution from 34 TAB-positive GCA patients, 15 TAB-negative GCA patients, and 30 controls were retrieved.

Objective: False-negative (FN) uptake of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) can be divided into those cases related to technological limitations of positron emission tomography (PET) and those related to inherent properties of neoplasms. Our goal was to clarify possible factors causing FN PET results in patients with solid-type pulmonary adenocarcinomas (PAs).

Methods: From January 2007 to December 2014, of the 255 patients with p-stage-1 non-small-cell lung cancer observed and treated (surgically) in our institution, we retrospectively reviewed the PET/computed tomography (CT) records, the clinical information, the preoperative thin-section CT images, and the pathological features [classified by the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer/American Thoracic Society/European Respiratory Society (IASLC/ATS/ERS) subtyping criteria] of 94 consecutive solid-type p-stage-1 PAs.

Objective: To correlate histopathological features of positive temporal artery biopsy (TAB) and clinical manifestations of the disease in a large single-center population-based cohort of patients with biopsy-proven giant cell arteritis (GCA).

Methods: A pathologist with expertise in vasculitis and blinded to clinical data and final diagnosis reviewed all TABs performed for suspected GCA at our hospital between January 1986 and December 2013. Histopathologic features evaluated were: the severity of inflammation and intimal hyperplasia, both graded on a semiquantitative scale (mild = 1, moderate = 2, severe = 3), the presence of intraluminal acute thrombosis, calcifications, giant cells, fibrinoid necrosis and laminar necrosis.

Malakoplakia in the colon has been described either as part of a systemic disease with a diffuse presentation or as a rare incidental finding associated usually with an adenocarcinoma. To our knowledge, the association of malakoplakia with colonic adenoma is very rare and only 5 cases, including the present case, have been reported so far. Here, we describe a case of malakoplakia coexisting with multiple sigmoid colonic adenomas in a 67-year-old patient without any underlying inflammatory or infectious disease and with no history of immunosuppressive treatment.

Pseudocarcinomatous hyperplasia (PCH) is a reactive proliferation of the epidermis that can be associated with many inflammatory and neoplastic conditions. Histologically, it is characterized by irregular strands of epidermis, usually at the level of the follicular infundibulum, projecting downward into the dermis. The differentiation between a well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma and PCH can be particularly challenging when the biopsy is superficial and the causing lesion is dermal-based.

Although the pathophysiology of chronic urticaria is not fully understood, it is possible that dysfunctioning of peripheral cutaneous nerve fibres may be involved. It has also been suggested that fibromyalgia syndrome, a multi-symptomatic chronic pain condition, may be associated with alterations and dysfunctioning of peripheral cutaneous nerve fibres. The aim of this study was to determine whether patients with chronic urticaria are also affected by fibromyalgia syndrome.
