We present a search for the lepton flavor violating decay B+-->K+ tau-/+ mu+/- using 383 x 10;{6} BB[over ] events collected by the BABAR experiment. The branching fraction for this decay can be substantially enhanced in new physics models. The kinematics of the tau from the signal B decay are inferred from the K+, mu, and other B in the event, which is fully reconstructed in one of a variety of hadronic decay modes, allowing the signal B candidate to be fully reconstructed.

The data sample comprises 232x10(6) Upsilon(4S)-->BB decays collected with the BABAR detector. From a combined fit to B- and B0 channels, we obtain the branching fractions B(B-->Dtau-nutau)=(0.

Three observers with different levels of expertise (a hip surgeon [O1], a fellow [O2], and a medical student who is a research assistant of the laboratory in which the software was developed [O3]) determined the 2-dimensional wear and wear direction with the Hip Suite software (University of Chicago, Chicago, Ill). For intraobserver and interobserver comparisons, we used intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and repeatability.

Stems with a rough surface finish require greater force to disrupt their interface with the cement than do stems with a smooth or polished surface. However, if micromotion occurs at the cement-metal interface, the fretting of a smoother surface implant results in less cement and metallic abrasion than an implant with a rough surface finish.

The G-rich strand of telomeric DNA can fold into a 4-stranded structure known as the G-quadruplex (G4), whose stabilization alters telomere function limiting cancer cell growth. By inhibiting Ras-MAPK kinase and phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase with different means, we find that both pathways play crucial roles in controlling v-Src-sustained growth factor and anchorage independence for proliferation. The Ras-MAPK kinase pathway also contributes to block of differentiation independently of cell proliferation since inhibition of this pathway both in proliferating and growth-arrested v-Src-transformed myoblasts induces expression of muscle-specific genes, fusion into multinucleated myotubes and assembly of specialized contractile structures.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFTotal hip arthroplasty is an operation with a high risk for venous thromboembolism. Three decades of research conducted at the Hospital for Special Surgery identified the exact timing of the thrombogenic stimulus during surgery, defined the role of magnetic resonance venography, and established the role of certain genetic and acquired predispositions. Based on these studies, we implemented a multimodal prophylaxis consisting of a series of safe preventive measures applied before, during, and immediately after surgery to reduce the risk of venous thromboembolism.
