Background: Arterial catheterisation is a common procedure in intensive care units (ICUs), typically performed using the palpation technique. Ultrasound (US)-guided catheterisation remains underutilised, particularly when performed by nonphysician operators.

Objective: The objective of this study was to assess the effectiveness of US-guided arterial catheterisation performed by nurses in critically ill patients.

Impact of Complex Anatomy and Patient Risk Profile in Minimally Invasive Mitral Valve Surgery.

Background: We aimed to assess the impact of complex mitral valve disease and patient risk profile on operative outcomes in the large cohort of the Mini-Mitral International Registry.

Methods: Patients were assigned to categories of complex degenerative mitral valve regurgitation (DMR; bileaflet or anterior mitral leaflet prolapse/flail) and simple DMR (posterior mitral leaflet prolapse/flail). Subgroup analyses was performed in low-risk (EuroSCORE II <8%) and high-risk (EuroSCORE II >8%) cohorts.

Immunologic signatures of response and resistance to nivolumab with ipilimumab in advanced metastatic cancer.

Identifying pan-tumor biomarkers that predict responses to immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) is critically needed. In the AMADEUS clinical trial (NCT03651271), patients with various advanced solid tumors were assessed for changes in intratumoral CD8 percentages and their response to ICI. Patients were grouped based on tumoral CD8 levels: those with CD8 <15% (CD8-low) received nivolumab (anti-PD-1) plus ipilimumab (anti-CTLA4) and those with CD8 ≥15% (CD8-high) received nivolumab monotherapy.

From spelling to reading: An intervention program with children at risk of reading failure.

This study aimed to assess the impact of an interactive spelling program on reading acquisition of children at risk of developing reading difficulties as well as to assess its effect on spelling and phonemic awareness. From an initial pool of 144 first-grade children attending four Portuguese primary schools, 53 children with low performances in letter knowledge and phonemic awareness tasks, and considered by their teachers to be at risk of developing reading difficulties, were selected. These children were randomly assigned to three groups: an experimental group that underwent an interactive spelling program, a comparison group that underwent a phonological awareness program, and a control group that underwent a copying program.

Pacemaker implantation after concomitant tricuspid valve repair in patients undergoing minimally invasive mitral valve surgery: Results from the Mini-Mitral International Registry.

Methods: From 2015 to 2021, 7513 patients underwent minimally invasive MV with or without cTVR in 17 international centers (MV: n = 5609, cTVR: n = 1113).

Leptospirosis, caused by the spirochete bacteria , is a zoonotic disease of humans and animals, accounting for over 1 million annual human cases and over 60,000 deaths. We have characterized operon transcriptional units, identified novel RNA coding regions, and reported evidence of potential posttranscriptional polyadenylation in the transcriptomes for the first time using Oxford Nanopore Technology RNA sequencing protocols. The newly identified RNA coding regions and operon transcriptional units were detected only in the pathogenic transcriptomes, suggesting their significance in virulence-related functions.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine the incidence and predictors of stroke after minimally invasive mitral valve surgery (mini-MVS) and to assess the role of preoperative CT scan on surgical management and neurological outcomes in the large cohort of Mini-Mitral International Registry.

Purpose: Effective, empathic communication is crucial for pediatric oncology clinicians when discussing palliative and end-of-life (PC/EOL) care with parents of children with cancer. Unfortunately, many parents report inadequate communication at these distressing times. This study evaluates the communication skills training (CST) clinicians received to deliver a PC/EOL communication intervention as part of a multi-site randomized-controlled trial (RCT).

The Many Hosts of Mycobacteria 9 (MHM9): A conference report.

The Many Hosts of Mycobacteria (MHM) meeting series brings together basic scientists, clinicians and veterinarians to promote robust discussion and dissemination of recent advances in our knowledge of numerous mycobacterial diseases, including human and bovine tuberculosis (TB), nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) infection, Hansen's disease (leprosy), Buruli ulcer and Johne's disease. The 9th MHM conference (MHM9) was held in July 2022 at The Ohio State University (OSU) and centered around the theme of "Confounders of Mycobacterial Disease." Confounders can and often do drive the transmission of mycobacterial diseases, as well as impact surveillance and treatment outcomes.

Having entered into its second century, the eradication program for bovine tuberculosis (bTB, caused by Mycobacterium bovis) in the United States of America occupies a position both enviable and daunting. Excepting four counties in Michigan comprising only 6109 km (0.06% of US land area) classified as Modified Accredited, as of April 2022 the entire country was considered Accredited Free of bTB by the US Department of Agriculture for cattle and bison.

Molecular epidemiology and transmission dynamics of multi-drug resistant tuberculosis strains using whole genome sequencing in the Amhara region, Ethiopia.

Background: Drug resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis prevention and care is a major challenge in Ethiopia. The World health organization has designated Ethiopia as one of the 30 high burden multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) countries. There is limited information regarding genetic diversity and transmission dynamics of MDR-TB in Ethiopia.

Endoscopic aortic valve surgery in isolated and concomitant procedures.

Objectives: To evaluate early outcomes of endoscopic aortic valve replacement (AVR) and risks of concomitant procedures done through the same working port.

Methods: At our institution, we performed a data analysis of 342 consecutive patients (from July 2013 to May 2021) who underwent endoscopic AVR with or without associated major procedure. Preoperative, intraoperative, postoperative data were evaluated.

Genomic epidemiology of infection in sympatric badger and cattle populations in Northern Ireland.

Bovine tuberculosis (bTB) is a costly, epidemiologically complex, multi-host, endemic disease. Lack of understanding of transmission dynamics may undermine eradication efforts. Pathogen whole-genome sequencing improves epidemiological inferences, providing a means to determine the relative importance of inter- and intra-species host transmission for disease persistence.

Prior anti-CTLA-4 therapy impacts molecular characteristics associated with anti-PD-1 response in advanced melanoma.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), including CTLA-4- and PD-1-blocking antibodies, can have profound effects on tumor immune cell infiltration that have not been consistent in biopsy series reported to date. Here, we analyze seven molecular datasets of samples from patients with advanced melanoma (N = 514) treated with ICI agents to investigate clinical, genomic, and transcriptomic features of anti-PD-1 response in cutaneous melanoma. We find that prior anti-CTLA-4 therapy is associated with differences in genomic, individual gene, and gene signatures in anti-PD-1 responders.

The selection of software and database for metagenomics sequence analysis impacts the outcome of microbial profiling and pathogen detection.

Shotgun metagenomic sequencing analysis is widely used for microbial profiling of biological specimens and pathogen detection. However, very little is known about the technical biases caused by the choice of analysis software and databases on the biological specimen. In this study, we evaluated different direct read shotgun metagenomics taxonomic profiling software to characterize the microbial compositions of simulated mice gut microbiome samples and of biological samples collected from wild rodents across multiple taxonomic levels.

A low BUN/creatinine ratio predicts histologically confirmed acute interstitial nephritis.

Introduction: In hospitalized patients with acute renal injury (AKI), acute tubulointerstitial nephritis (AIN) constitutes one of the leading etiologies. The objective of this study was to identify clinical and biochemical variables in patients with AKI associated with kidney biopsy-confirmed AIN.

Methods: For our prospective study, we recruited hospitalized patients aged 18 years and older who were diagnosed with AKI based on biochemical criteria.

Objectives: With the popularization of catheter-based mitral valve procedures, evaluating risk-specific differentiated clinical outcomes after contemporary mitral valve surgery is crucial. In this study, we assessed the operative results of minimally invasive mitral valve operations across different patient risk profiles and evaluated the value of EuroSCORE (ES) II predicted risk of mortality model for risk prediction, in the large cohort of Mini-Mitral International Registry (MMIR).

Methods: The MMIR database was used to analyse mini-mitral operations between 2015 and 2021.

Totally Endoscopic Constrictive Pericarditis Treatment: A Case Series.

Minimally invasive cardiac surgery has increased in popularity to reduce the morbidity associated with open heart surgery. In this article, a totally endoscopic case series is presented in which anterior pericardiectomy is performed by peripheral femoral arterial and venous cannulation. Right periareoal incision and right submammary incision were used for male and female patients, respectively, to access the heart by the fourth intercostal space.

Introduction: Surgery of the midface for non-syndromic patients with maxillo-malar hypoplasia exclusively has had many breakthroughs lately. The surgical techniques for midface surgery are varied and must be selected according to the patient's problem.

Purpose: The technique is a modification of the Z Osteotomy, the Modified Anterior Z Le Fort III Osteotomy (MAZLFIIIO), is used to correct posteroanterior midface deficiency of 6 mm at most.

Wandering spleen: An unsuspected presentation at a general hospital in Uganda.

Introduction And Importance: Wandering spleen is an uncommon condition marked by splenic hypermobility due to laxity or underdevelopment of the supporting splenic ligaments. Patients may be asymptomatic, have a palpable mass in the abdomen, or exhibit acute, long-lasting, or sporadic symptoms as a result of the spleen's pedicle torsion. The management should be determined by the spleen's vitality.
