Unlabelled: The medical dashboard (DB) recording our clinical practices indicated on one hand the use of two different diagnosis terms, acute dermohypodermitis (ADH) or cellulitis, and on the other hand, an important antibiotic prescription heterogeneity. Our aim was to define these two diagnosis groups and to document compliance to our antibiotic therapy protocol.

Method: ADH and cellulitis were selected in our medical DB that records all patient data.

We investigated the relationship between the duration of antiretroviral exposure and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) evolution in CKD patients. In a cohort of 1,750 HIV-infected patients, we identified 121 CKD patients with a mean follow-up of 44 ± 35 months.

As the Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine does not confer long-lasting protection against lung Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection, the development of more efficient vaccines is greatly needed. Here, we used mycobacterial low-molecular weight proteins of the 6-kDa Early Secreted Antigenic Target (ESAT-6) protein family (ESX) antigens for the evaluation of a novel vaccine delivery strategy that enables versatile in vivo targeting of antigens into specialized dendritic cell (DC) subsets. ESX antigens were genetically fused to the tetramerizing core of streptavidin (SA) to form high-affinity complexes with biotin (biot)-conjugated antibodies recognizing DC surface receptors.

TLR2, TLR4 and the MYD88 signaling pathway are crucial for neutrophil migration in acute kidney injury induced by sepsis.

The aim of this study was to investigate the role of TLR2, TLR4 and MyD88 in sepsis-induced AKI. C57BL/6 TLR2(-/-), TLR4(-/-) and MyD88(-/-) male mice were subjected to sepsis by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP). Twenty four hours later, kidney tissue and blood samples were collected for analysis.

Adhesin-encoding genes from shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli are more prevalent in atypical than in typical enteropathogenic E. coli.

Four of six adhesin-encoding genes (lpfA, paa, iha, and toxB) from Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli strains were detected in typical and atypical enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) strains of various serotypes. Although the most prevalent gene was lpfA in both groups, paa was the only potential diarrhea-associated gene in atypical EPEC.

Isolation of yellow fever virus (YFV) from naturally infected Haemagogus (Conopostegus) leucocelaenus (diptera, cukicudae) in São Paulo State, Brazil, 2009.

After detecting the death of Howlers monkeys (genus Alouatta) and isolation of yellow fever virus (YFV) in Buri county, São Paulo, Brazil, an entomological research study in the field was started. A YFV strain was isolated from newborn Swiss mice and cultured cells of Aedes albopictus - C6/36, from a pool of six Haemagogus (Conopostegus) leucocelaenus (Hg. leucocelaenus) mosquitoes (Dyar & Shannon) collected at the study site.

Lysyl oxidase-like 2 (LOXL2), a new regulator of cell polarity required for metastatic dissemination of basal-like breast carcinomas.

Basal-like breast carcinoma is characterized by the expression of basal/myoepithelial markers, undifferentiated phenotype, highly aggressive behaviour and frequent triple negative status (ESR-, PR-, Her2neu-). We have previously shown that epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) occurs in basal-like breast tumours and identified Lysyl-oxidase-like 2 (LOXL2) as an EMT player and poor prognosis marker in squamous cell carcinomas. We now show that LOXL2 mRNA is overexpressed in basal-like human breast carcinomas.

Safety of liver transplantation with Chagas disease-seropositive donors for seronegative recipients.

The shortage of organs for transplantation has prompted the investigation of extended criteria donors, such as donors with transmissible infectious diseases. Here we report our recent experience with liver transplantation using organs from donors who were serologically positive for Chagas disease. We also provide a review of the literature and emphasize donor screening and preventive measures.

Mobile Emergency Care Service: analysis of Brazilian policy.

Objective: To analyze the configuration of mobile emergency health care policy in Brazil.

Methodological Procedures: The study was based on public policy analysis. Bibliographic and document review, analysis of official data and interviews with federal administrators related to formulation and implementation of the Mobile Emergency Care Service (SAMU) in Brazil in the 2000s were performed.

Adsorption of phenol on supercritically activated carbon fibres: effect of texture and surface chemistry.

The influence of texture and surface chemistry on the phenol adsorption capacity of activated carbon fibres (ACFs) was studied. ACFs were prepared by carbonization of a phenolic textile fibre under nitrogen flow, followed by activation with H(2)O and CO(2) (under atmospheric pressure and supercritical state). The materials were characterised by N(2) and CO(2) adsorption, and by temperature programmed desorption studies.

Blood pressure in young adults.

Introduction: Hypertension (HT) is a major cardiovascular risk factor. Elevated blood pressure (BP) in childhood predisposes to HT in adulthood. Epidemiological studies in young age-groups are scarce.

Prevalence and characteristics of the O122 pathogenicity island in typical and atypical enteropathogenic Escherichia coli strains.

The presence of the pathogenicity island (PAI) O122 genes, efa1 (lifA), sen, pagC, nleB, and nleE, in typical and atypical enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) strains was investigated. The simultaneous occurrence of all genes was statistically associated with diarrhea due to atypical EPEC. Detection of the complete PAI O122 could aid in the identification of potential pathogenic strains of atypical EPEC.

[Urinary pneumococcal or Legionella antigen detection tests and low-spectrum antibiotic therapy for community-acquired pneumonia].

Unlabelled: We performed urinary antigen tests for pneumococcus and Legionella for patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), to prescribe a documented antibiotic therapy. We report the efficiency of low-spectrum antibiotic treatment, illustrating the inappropriateness of bacteriological respiratory sampling.

Patients And Methods: Patients with CAP were enrolled from three different units; the pneumonia severity index was used to assess the disease.

[Evaluation of clinical practice, medical computerized database and improvement of antibiotic therapy for acute community-acquired pneumonia].

Unlabelled: The evaluation of clinical practice includes three successive phases: demonstration of suboptimal clinical practice, proposals for improvement, and assessment of effective changes. We present a medical computerized database used for this evaluation.

Patient And Methods: Our database includes 24 parameters for all hospitalized patients among which diagnosis and antibiotherapy.

From the limits of the classical model of sensitometric curves to a realistic model based on the percolation theory for GafChromic EBT films.

Purpose: Modern radiotherapy uses complex treatments that necessitate more complex quality assurance procedures. As a continuous medium, GafChromic EBT films offer suitable features for such verification. However, its sensitometric curve is not fully understood in terms of classical theoretical models.

[Satoyoshi syndrome: report of one case].

Satoyoshi syndrome is a rare multisystemic disease of presumed autoimmune etiology characterized by progressive painful intermittent muscle spasms, diarrhea frequently associated with malabsorption, alopecia, skeletal abnormalities and endocrine disorders with a poor long-term prognosis due to early crippling. We report a 14-year-old Chilean girl with clinical and radiological features of the syndrome who has been successfully treated with prednisone and carbamazepine. She remarkably recovered from muscle spasms, alopecia and diarrhea.

Advanced photoelectric effect experiment beamline at Elettra: A surface science laboratory coupled with Synchrotron Radiation.

We report the main characteristics of the advanced photoelectric effect experiments beamline, operational at Elettra storage ring, featuring a fully independent double branch scheme obtained by the use of chicane undulators and able to keep polarization control in both linear and circular mode. The paper describes the novel technical solutions adopted, namely, (a) the design of a quasiperiodic undulator resulting in optimized suppression of higher harmonics over a large photon energy range (10-100 eV), (b) the thermal stability of optics under high heat load via cryocoolers, and (c) the end station interconnected setup allowing full access to off-beam and on-beam facilities and, at the same time, the integration of users' specialized sample growth chambers or modules.

[Usefulness of C-reactive protein in the therapeutic follow-up of infected patients].

The authors publish the first precise, specific, valid questionnaire in Spanish which measures the quality of life related to health for patients who have undergone an intestinal or urological ostomy; furthermore, this questionnaire has been validated in a sample of Spanish population. The OPM Division of B. Braun Medical was the sponsor of the study which led to the creation of this QUALYPOLL questionnaire.

Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) strains may carry virulence properties of diarrhoeagenic E. coli.

To analyze whether Escherichia coli strains that cause urinary tract infections (UPEC) share virulence characteristics with the diarrheagenic E. coli (DEC) pathotypes and to recognize their genetic diversity, 225 UPEC strains were examined for the presence of various properties of DEC and UPEC (type of interaction with HeLa cells, serogroups and presence of 30 virulence genes). No correlation between adherence patterns and serogroups was observed.

The localized adherence pattern of an atypical enteropathogenic Escherichia coli is mediated by intimin omicron and unexpectedly promotes HeLa cell invasion.

Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) forms attaching and effacing lesions in the intestinal mucosa characterized by intimate attachment to the epithelium by means of intimin (an outer membrane adhesin encoded by eae). EPEC is subgrouped into typical (tEPEC) and atypical (aEPEC); only tEPEC carries the EAF (EPEC adherence factor) plasmid that encodes the bundle-forming pilus (BFP). Characteristically, after 3 h of incubation, tEPEC produces localized adherence (LA) (with compact microcolonies) in HeLa/HEp-2 cells by means of BFP, whereas most aEPEC form looser microcolonies.

Generation of calibrated tungsten target x-ray spectra: modified TBC model.

In spite of the recent advances in the experimental detection of x-ray spectra, theoretical or semi-empirical approaches for determining realistic x-ray spectra in the range of diagnostic energies are important tools for planning experiments, estimating radiation doses in patients, and formulating radiation shielding models. The TBC model is one of the most useful approaches since it allows for straightforward computer implementation, and it is able to accurately reproduce the spectra generated by tungsten target x-ray tubes. However, as originally presented, the TBC model fails in situations where the determination of x-ray spectra produced by an arbitrary waveform or the calculation of realistic values of air kerma for a specific x-ray system is desired.

Characterization of atypical enteropathogenic Escherichia coli strains that express typical localized adherence in HeLa cells in the absence of the bundle-forming pilus.

The characterization of nine atypical enteropathogenic Escherichia coli strains expressing localized adherence in HeLa cells in the absence of the bundle-forming pilus revealed a diversity of serotypes, plasmids, and virulence genes.
