In the past two decades, religious leaders have garnered increased interest from health ministries and NGOs as promoters, educators, and implementers of sensitive health programs such as family planning in several African countries. While religious leaders' role as public health actors has been well-documented, there are few ethnographic accounts of how religious leaders engage with public health programs, especially family planning. Informed by twelve months of ethnographic study in three rural and peri-urban locations in Kilombero district in 2014-2016, this article examines how Muslim religious leaders experienced and negotiated their role as implementers of family planning services.

Anhidrotic/hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia is a rare disorder, genetically heterogeneous, commonly X-linked recessive inherited, characterized by hypoplasia up to the absence of the eccrine glands with hypo-anhidrosis and secondary hyperpyrexia, hypodontia and some typical craniofacial features. Some papers have described how these patients may show poor growth, while other recent research shows normal growth. We report a boy with anhidrotic/hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia and growth hormone neurosecretory dysfunction, an association not previously reported, and we discuss the possible causes as well as the patient's response to growth hormone treatment until he reached final height.

Introduction: Monoallelic microdeletion of chromosome 22q11 (22q11DS) is considered to be the commonest human microdeletion syndrome. Abnormalities of thyroid function are sporadically reported in this syndrome, but very few studies have specifically assessed this issue, and thyroid morphology has not been systematically studied.

Design: To evaluate the prevalence of abnormalities of thyroid function and morphology in a cohort of paediatric and adult patients with 22q11DS.

Background: The arginine test is used for the diagnosis of growth hormone deficiency (GHD), but its duration is not uniform and varies from 180 to 90 min.

Subjects And Methods: To standardize this test, evaluating the possibility to shorten it to 90 min, we investigated the response of GH to the arginine test in 208 children evaluated for short stature (height less than -2 SD); 67 were diagnosed with idiopathic short stature (ISS) and 141 with GHD. We calculated the frequency distribution of the GH peaks to arginine in GHD and in ISS at various times and the percentage of GH peaks to arginine before and after 90 min in all and in ISS children.

In the Williams-Beuren syndrome (WBS), disorders of the thyroid function and morphology have been reported and programs of thyroid screening and surveillance are recommended. However, the frequency of biochemical thyroid assessment, particularly in the first year of life, is being debated. In this report we describe an infant with WBS and congenital hypothyroidism, due to an important thyroid hypoplasia.

Objective: The reported data on thyroid function and anti-thyroid autoantibodies in adults with untreated hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection are controversial. Data are scarce for HCV-infected children, and only in those treated with interferon-alpha (IFN-alpha). We investigated thyroid function and anti-thyroid autoantibodies in a cohort of untreated children with vertically acquired, chronic, HCV infection.

Introduction: Oral clonidine is one of the most frequent drugs used for the diagnosis of growth hormone deficiency (GHD), but the duration of the test, depending on which European centres use it, is not uniform and can vary from 120 to 150 min or even 180 min.

Subjects And Methods: To standardize this test, evaluating the possibility to shorten it to 90 min, we investigated the response of GH to the oral clonidine test in 291 children evaluated for short stature (height <-2 SD). Of these, 164 were diagnosed as idiopathic short stature (ISS) and 127 as GHD.

Objectives: Changes in magnetic field are associated with a decrease in nocturnal urinary melatonin excretion. Television screens emit low and very low frequency electromagnetic waves (radiofrequencies and light) and exposure to them may be associated with a decrease in 24-hour melatonin in children's urine. Design and setting.

Through a review of 83 cases reported in literature, including our experience of two successful right laparoscopic adrenalectomies performed in a 3-year-old girl for androgen-secreting adenoma and in a 9-year-old male for pheochromocitoma, we have anaIyzed the indications, the techniques and the results of laparoscopic or retroperitoneoscopic adrenalectomy in children. Nineteen pheochromocytomas, 18 neuroblastomas, 15 adenomas, 12 ganglioneuromas, 9 hyperplasias, 2 carcinomas, 1 teratoma and 1 adrenogenital syndrome have been treated with excellent results (follow-up 1 month to 4 years) with no evidence of recurrence. The age range is from 1 month to 16 years with an equal female/male ratio.

Objective: Children and adolescents with type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus (T1DM) show several impairment of bone metabolism and structure, resulting in a higher risk of decreased bone mass and its related complications later in life. Alterations of the nuclear factor-kappaB ligand (RANKL)/osteoprotegerin (OPG) system have been implicated in several metabolic bone diseases characterized by increased osteoclast differentiation and activation and enhanced bone resorption.

Design: We aimed to assess OPG levels and to investigate the possible relation between OPG levels, bone status and glycemic control in a group of prepubertal children with T1DM without microvascular complications.

A multi-center four-hourly sampling of many tissues for 7 days (00:00 on April 5-20:00 to April 11, 2004), on rats standardized for 1 month in two rooms on antiphasic lighting regimens happened to start on the day after the second extremum of a moderate double magnetic storm gauged by the planetary geomagnetic Kp index (which at each extremum reached 6.3 international [arbitrary] units) and by an equatorial index Dst falling to -112 and -81 nT, respectively, the latter on the first day of the sampling. Neuroendocrine chronomes (specifically circadian time structures) differed during magnetically affected and quiet days.

"Chronoastrobiology: are we at the threshold of a new science? Is there a critical mass for scientific research?" A simple photograph of the planet earth from outer space was one of the greatest contributions of space exploration. It drove home in a glance that human survival depends upon the wobbly dynamics in a thin and fragile skin of water and gas that covers a small globe in a mostly cold and vast universe. This image raised the stakes in understanding our place in that universe, in finding out where we came from and in choosing a path for survival.

Type I Chiari malformation is a disorder characterized by a displacement of the cerebellar tonsils through the foramen magnum into the upper cervical spinal canal and, contrary to type II Arnold-Chiari malformation, without the presence of myelomeningocele. As described in the literature, patients suffering from Arnold-Chiari malformation with myelomeningocele can frequently present with precocious puberty, whereas only one report shows an association between Chiari I malformation and early puberty. We describe three young males--8.

An inferential statistical quantification of chronomes (time structures) in the range of everyday physiology has earlier revealed changes affecting the circadian amplitude of melatonin in the absence of changes in the chronome-adjusted mean value (MESOR) or in the acrophase. A chrono-meta-analysis of published data on patients with the Smith-Magenis syndrome herein quantifies the average extent of shift in the acrophase of the circadian melatonin rhythm, reported earlier by others time-macroscopically as an antiphase. Time-microscopically, the phase shift averages 9.
