Article Synopsis
  • Erectile dysfunction (ED) can occur in men who have had bilateral nerve-sparing surgery, with corporo-venocclusive dysfunction (CVOD) being a primary cause of permanent ED after radical prostatectomy (RP).
  • A study examined comorbidity factors linked to CVOD in men without prior ED who underwent RP, finding significant associations with increased age and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).
  • The research highlights that comorbidities, particularly OSA, influence recovery of erectile function post-surgery; however, the findings may not apply broadly to all patients, as the study focused on men already seeking treatment for ED.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to evaluate whether testosterone therapy (TTh) affects the rates of biochemical recurrence (BCR) in men with low-intermediate prostate cancer who have undergone radical prostatectomy (RP).
  • - A total of 5,199 men were studied, with 198 receiving TTh post-RP; the analysis adjusted for factors like age and preoperative PSA levels.
  • - Results showed a slightly lower risk of BCR in men on TTh, but overall BCR rates were low in both groups, suggesting TTh can be safe for select men after RP without increasing BCR risk.

The influence of global climate change on temperature-related health outcomes among vulnerable populations, particularly young children, is underexplored. Using a case time series design, we analysed 647,000 hospital admissions of children aged under five years old in New Zealand, born between 2000 and 2019. We explored the relationship between daily maximum temperatures and hospital admissions across 2139 statistical areas.

Article Synopsis
  • PI4KA-related disorder is marked by a variety of neurological and gastrointestinal issues, including spasticity, developmental challenges, and recurrent infections, with specific attention given to the impact on B-cell function and immunodeficiency in some patients. * -
  • The study involved analyzing 13 patients with PI4KA variants, revealing common traits such as B-cell deficiency and hypogammaglobulinemia, alongside significant changes in B-cell subsets and functioning due to metabolic disruptions. * -
  • Findings indicate that mutations in PI4KA lead to disturbances in lipid production and metabolic pathways in B cells, fostering mitochondrial dysfunction and abnormal immune responses, suggesting a critical role of PI4KA in B-cell differentiation and health. *

Background: Prostate cancer (PCa) diagnosis and treatment can have a significant negative impact on sexual health, affecting patients and their partners; however, the impact on partners is insufficiently addressed in current practice.

Objective: We describe the development and validation of an instrument to measure sexual health in female partners of patients with PCa.

Design, Setting, And Participants: Questions assessing sexual health were developed through a literature review, two qualitative studies, and an expert consensus process.

Objective: To characterize unmet sexual health resource needs and preferences for interventions to address unmet needs among female partners of patients with prostate cancer (PCa), given the significant negative impact of PCa on the sexual health of partners.

Methods: We conducted an exploratory sequential mixed methods study of female partners recruited from multiple U.S.

Recent extreme weather events attributable to climate change have major implications for policy. Here we summarize and evaluate the current state of climate change adaptation policy, from a health perspective, for Aotearoa New Zealand, based on government sources. Legislation relating to both environmental management and health are currently subject to major reforms.

As one of five Laurentian Great Lakes, Lake Erie ranks among the top freshwater drinking sources and ecosystems globally. Historical and current agriculture mismanagement and climate change sustains the environmental landscape for late summer cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms, and consequently, cyanotoxins such as microcystin (MC). Microcystin microbial degradation is a promising mitigation strategy, however the mechanisms controlling the breakdown of MCs in Lake Erie are not well understood.

Introduction: Although human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) care is a recommended competency for family medicine training, many programs report a lack of HIV expertise among faculty. After the departure of faculty with HIV care experience, an interprofessional HIV quality improvement team (HIV-QIT) of physicians and pharmacists aimed to maintain on-site HIV care and retain learning opportunities for residents, using process improvement and panel reviews with a remote HIV specialist faculty member.

Methods: This study reports on a multicycle quality improvement pilot project with pre- and postintervention chart reviews between December 2019 and May 2021.

Introduction: Access to surgical care for gender-affirming surgery (GAS) has been a persistent challenge within the DoD due to long waiting lists, strict insurance requirements, and surgeon/subspecialty scarcity. These issues were magnified during the COVID-19 pandemic response, as limited resources led to postponement of "elective" surgeries. To remedy this, our center organized a multidisciplinary collaboration to perform simultaneous GAS.

Introduction: Research exploring the mistreatment of birthing people in the United States is emerging rapidly within the context of increasingly poor maternal health outcomes that include unacceptable racial disparities. Previous research has explored overlap between psychological birth trauma and mistreatment using patient descriptions of birth experiences, but no previous studies have explored these issues from the perspectives of clinicians. The aim of this study was to explore whether maternity care providers' descriptions of patient birth trauma overlap with categories of mistreatment from a globally accepted typology.

Background: Prostate cancer (PCa) and its treatments can have a significant negative impact on the sexual health of survivors and couples, but few studies have specifically examined the impact of PCa-related sexual dysfunction on female partners of survivors.

Aim: Our objective was to perform a qualitative study to comprehensively characterize female partners' perceptions of the implications of PCa on their sex lives, as well as partners' sexual health concerns and unmet needs.

Methods: We conducted semi-structured telephone interviews about sexual health and unmet needs with female partners of PCa survivors recruited from multiple clinical locations and support groups for PCa caregivers from September 2021 to March 2022.

SnoRNAs are frequently processed into snoRNA-derived RNAs (sdRNAs) that function much like traditional microRNAs (miRNAs). That said, our analyses suggest a global switch from DICER-dependent (predominately miRNA) to DICER-independent (predominately sdRNA) biogenesis/gene regulation in colon cancer. Whereas the expressions of 259 of 288 appreciably expressed miRNAs are significantly decreased (avg.

Context: COVID-19 has worsened health disparities among vulnerable populations, including minority and non-English-speaking populations. Community outreach is an effective method to bridge the gap for those populations. Virtual Community Outreach (VCO) emerged as a novel and sustainable approach during the pandemic but is unstudied.

Isoprene is one of the most abundant and most frequently evaluated volatile organic compounds in exhaled breath. Recently, several individuals with background levels of exhaled isoprene have been identified. Here, case study data are provided for an individual, identified from a previous study, with this low prevalence phenotype.

Efforts to make research environments more inclusive and diverse are beneficial for the next generation of Great Lakes researchers. The global COVID-19 pandemic introduced circumstances that forced graduate programs and academic institutions to re-evaluate and promptly pivot research traditions, such as weekly seminar series, which are critical training grounds and networking opportunities for early career researchers (ECRs). While several studies have established that academics with funded grants and robust networks were better able to weather the abrupt changes in research and closures of institutions, ECRs did not.

Imagery rescripting (ImRs) is a therapy technique that, unlike traditional re-living techniques, focuses less on exposure and verbal challenging of cognitions and instead encourages patients to directly transform the intrusive imagery to change the depicted course of events in a more desired direction. However, a comprehensive account of how and in what circumstances ImRs brings about therapeutic change is required if treatment is to be optimised, and this is yet to be developed. The present study reports on the development of a coding scheme of ImRs psychotherapy elements identified in the literature as potential ImRs mechanisms.
