Background: Hospital re-admission for persons with Crohn's disease (CD) is a significant contributor to morbidity and healthcare costs. We derived prediction models of risk of 90-day re-hospitalization among persons with CD that could be applied at hospital discharge to target outpatient interventions mitigating this risk.

Methods: We performed a retrospective study in persons with CD admitted between 2009 and 2016 for an acute CD-related indication.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study focuses on finding effective ways to differentiate Crohn's disease from cryptoglandular disease in patients with isolated perianal fistulas who showed no visible inflammation during traditional imaging tests like ileocolonoscopy and enterography.
  • - Researchers used video capsule endoscopy to evaluate 45 adults with isolated perianal fistulas and discovered that 26% of these patients had signs of Crohn's disease, significantly higher than the 3% found in controls without perianal fistulas.
  • - The study concludes that video capsule endoscopy is a promising tool for detecting small intestine inflammation in these patients, although more extensive research is necessary to confirm these findings.

Background: Pancolonic dye spray chromoendoscopy (DCE) is used as an adjunct to white light endoscopy (WLE) to enhance the detection and delineation of ill-defined neoplastic (dysplastic) lesions in persons with colonic inflammatory bowel diseases (cIBD). We evaluated the utility of DCE as follow-up to high-definition WLE (HD-WLE) to "unmask" and/or facilitate endoscopic resection of neoplastic lesions.

Methods: We retrospectively studied persons with cIBD who underwent DCE as follow-up to HD-WLE between 2013 and 2020.

Objective: To describe celiac disease (CD) screening rates and glycemic outcomes of a gluten-free diet (GFD) in patients with type 1 diabetes who are asymptomatic for CD.

Research Design And Methods: Asymptomatic patients (8-45 years) were screened for CD. Biopsy-confirmed CD participants were randomized to GFD or gluten-containing diet (GCD) to assess changes in HbA and continuous glucose monitoring over 12 months.

Background: Wait times for gastroenterologists in Canada continue to exceed recommended targets. Electronic consultation (eConsult) may reduce the need for face-to-face gastroenterologist visits.

Objective: The goal of this study was to identify the cases submitted to gastroenterologists though the Champlain BASE™ (Building Access to Specialists through eConsultation) eConsult service and explore their impact on primary care physicians' (PCPs) courses of action.

Two recent cases of glomus tumors (GTs) of the gastrointestinal tract presented with symptoms of GI bleeding. GTs, typically benign lesions of mesenchymal origin, are rarely seen in the GI tract, and most commonly involve the distal appendages. This case series discusses the tumor biology, presentation, imaging, endoscopic findings, pathology and management of GTs.

Pneumatosis intestinalis has been described in association with many gastrointestinal tract disorders including infection, ischemia and obstruction. It has also been described in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, connective tissue disorders, organ transplantation, leukemia and various states of immunodeficiency. In the present paper, the case of a 66-year-old woman with chronic bronchiectasis who subsequently developed pneumatosis intestinalis is described.

An aberrant right subclavian artery (ARSA) is a common aortic arch abnormality. A case of a 57-year-old man presenting with melena and hypotension secondary to an ARSA-esophageal fistula is reported. The current report is unique because it is the first reported case of ARSA-esophageal fistula associated with prior esophagectomy and gastric pull-up.

Background: Regulatory agencies have warned clinicians regarding the risk of electrolyte abnormalities if more than two 45-mL bottles of oral sodium phosphate (NaP) solution are administered within a 24-hour period.

Objective: To compare the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of different regimens of oral NaP and polyethylene glycol (PEG).

Design: Randomized controlled trial.

Until recently, celiac disease (CD) was felt to be a rare disease in the United States. The aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review of the prevalence of CD in general Western populations and in populations at high risk for CD. Standard systematic review methodology was used.

Clinicians are increasingly utilizing noninvasive serologic tests for the diagnosis and screening of celiac disease (CD). The aim of this study was to conduct a systematic review of the diagnostic performance of serologic tests for the diagnosis and screening of CD. Standard systematic review methodology was used.
