The sensitive measurement of electrical signals is at the heart of modern technology. According to the principles of quantum mechanics, any detector or amplifier necessarily adds a certain amount of noise to the signal, equal to at least the noise added by quantum fluctuations. This quantum limit of added noise has nearly been reached in superconducting devices that take advantage of nonlinearities in Josephson junctions.

The effects of different stall surface materials were evaluated in an unheated building in which only a small amount of bedding was used. The lying time and preferences of 18 cows using 3 stall surface materials (concrete, soft rubber mat, and sand) were compared.

Cows were fed four different red clover silages and two timothy-meadow fescue silages as controls. The red clover silages contained daidzein, formononetin, biochanin A and genistein, whereas the timothy-meadow fescue silages contained no isoflavones.

Further, no information exists on the effects on calf behavior and performance of different water delivery systems during these stages. Therefore, the objectives of this study were first, to examine the water intake of calves fed acidified milk replacer ad libitum during the milk-feeding and weaning stages, and second, to determine whether the method of water delivery affected water and feed intake and growth during these periods or oral behavior during weaning.

A total of 52 dairy cows were kept either on straw bedded concrete stalls or sand stalls for at least 21 wk. The lying behavior was observed, and hock lesions, hoof health, and cleanliness of the cows and stalls were measured.

Milk samples from 328 udder quarters of 82 dairy cows (30 primiparous, 52 multiparous) were collected 2 wk before calving, at calving, and every 4 wk thereafter until the end of lactation or until the cow left the herd. The CNS isolated from the milk samples were analyzed with the API Staph ID 32 (bioMérieux, Marcy l'Etoile, France) test (API) and genotyped using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) analysis.

We found 411 +/- 65 ng/mL of equol and traces of formononetin and daidzein in organic skimmed milk whereas conventionally produced milk contained 62 +/- 16 ng/mL of equol and no formononetin or daidzein.

Eighty-four calves with respiratory disease from 18 herds in different parts of Finland were chosen for a study evaluating the capacity of different respiratory pathogens to cause changes in different acute phase protein concentrations, white blood cell (WBC) count and clinical signs. The selected acute phase proteins were fibrinogen, haptoglobin, serum amyloid-A, lipopolysaccharide binding protein and alpha1-acid glycoprotein. From each calf, a paired blood sample was obtained for serological studies of bovine parainfluenza virus-3, bovine respiratory syncytial virus, bovine coronavirus, bovine adenovirus-3 and bovine adenovirus-7.

Sample Population: Samples of TBLF obtained from 11 calves with clinical signs of respiratory tract disease and growth of P multocida and Mycoplasma spp during culture of TBLF and samples of TBLF from 6 clinically normal calves with no bacterial growth during culture of TBLF.
Procedure: MMPs in TBLF were analyzed by use of gelatin zymography.
Data from the national dairy cow recording systems during 1997 were used to calculate lactation-specific cumulative risk of mastitis treatments and cumulative risk of removal from the herds in Denmark, Finland Norway and Sweden. Sweden had the lowest risk of recorded mastitis treatments during 305 days of lactation and Norway had the highest risk. The incidence risk of recorded mastitis treatments during 305 days of lactation in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden was 0.

Compared to cows in a warm loose-housing system, cows in a cold loose-housing system had the same period from calving-to-first-service, a significant 6% lower first-service-pregnancy risk and the same repeated-service-conception hazard.

In a retrospective cohort study 101,793 cows from 5844 tie stalls and 11,811 cows from 437 loose-housing systems from all over Finland were followed from calving in 2000 until the end of lactation. The observed incidences of those cows were then analysed using generalised linear mixed models.

Quarter milk samples were taken from 48 clinically healthy, pregnant Finnish Ayrshire and Friesian dairy cows at the last milking before drying-off, and 2 and 6 days later to determine the lactoferrin and citrate concentrations in the udder secretion. The mean lactoferrin concentration in the milk increased from 5.29 mg ml(-1) on the last day of drying-off process to 8.
