The lack of standardization in patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) has made measurement and comparison of quality of life (QoL) outcomes in research focused on obesity treatment challenging. This study reports on the results of the second and third global multidisciplinary Standardizing Quality of life measures in Obesity Treatment (S.Q.

Article Synopsis
  • COVID-19 poses a higher mortality risk for individuals with diabetes, severe obesity, and cardiovascular disease, potentially due to chronic inflammation linked to type 2 diabetes.
  • This study involved 350 patients with type 2 diabetes hospitalized for moderate-severe COVID-19, comparing the effects of pioglitazone against a placebo over 28 days, focusing on severe clinical outcomes and inflammation levels.
  • Although pioglitazone reduced certain inflammatory markers, it did not significantly improve outcomes, as more patients treated with it required ICU care and showed no notable difference in CRP reduction compared to those on placebo.

Objectives: Bariatric surgery is a well-established treatment for obesity and type 2 diabetes. Tirzepatide, a dual GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonist, has emerged as a promising therapy for type 2 diabetes. This study aimed to compare the effects of bariatric surgery, semaglutide (a GLP-1 receptor agonist), and tirzepatide in Sprague-Dawley rats fed a high-fat diet.

Purpose: The focus of measuring success in obesity treatment is shifting from weight loss to patients' health and quality of life. The objective of this study was to select a core set of patient-reported outcomes and patient-reported outcome measures to be used in clinical obesity care.

Materials And Methods: The Standardizing Quality of Life in Obesity Treatment III, face-to-face hybrid consensus meeting, including people living with obesity as well as healthcare providers, was held in Maastricht, the Netherlands, in 2022.

Introduction: The International Federation for Surgery for Obesity and Metabolic Disorders (IFSO) Global Registry aims to provide descriptive data about the caseload and penetrance of surgery for metabolic disease and obesity in member countries. The data presented in this report represent the key findings of the eighth report of the IFSO Global Registry.

Methods: All existing Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (MBS) registries known to IFSO were invited to contribute to the eighth report.

Background: Metabolic and bariatric surgery (MBS) is the most effective treatment for obesity and improvement of obesity-associated comorbidities. However, a proportion of these patients may suffer from weight recurrence and recurrence of obesity-associated comorbidities.

Method: A retrospective cohort study of patients who underwent SG between January 2008 and August 2022 and sought treatment for weight recurrence with semaglutide or tirzepetide from January 2022 onwards.

Objective: 44% of Kuwait's population live with obesity and the health consequences place a significant burden on the public health system. This study provides an assessment of the cost burden of obesity-related comorbidities (ORC).

Methods: A retrospective micro-costing analysis was conducted to quantify the direct cost associated with ORCs.

The rising prevalence of severe obesity has led to a parallel increase in bariatric surgeries, raising a complex array of medicolegal issues. This review aims to analyze and synthesize literature on bariatric surgery malpractice, focusing on patient demographics, surgical complications, litigation costs, and the nature of malpractice cases. A systematic search was conducted across multiple databases for relevant studies published up to May 2023.

Background: This cross-sectional cohort study assessed the inequalities in oesophageal carcinoma risk by age, sex and nativity in Kuwait: 1980-2019.

Methods: Using oesophageal cancer incidence data from the Kuwait National Cancer Registry, relevant Kuwaiti population data and World Standard Population as a reference, age-standardized incidence rates (ASIR) (per 100,000 person-years) overall and by subcohorts were computed. The incident oesophageal cancer cases count was overdispersed with excessive structural zeros, therefore, it was analyzed using multivariable zero-inflated negative binomial (ZINB) model.

Purpose: Revisional bariatric surgeries following laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) have demonstrated a dramatic increase worldwide. Recently, one-anastomosis gastric bypass (OAGB) has become a contender as an appropriate revisional procedure; however, no long-term data currently exist on the effectiveness of it as a revisional surgery post-LSG.

Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed on all patients who underwent LSG at a public hospital in Kuwait from 2008 to 2017.

Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (SG) is the most frequently performed bariatric procedure worldwide. Long-term complications such as insufficient weight loss (IWL) and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) may necessitate SG conversion to Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB). The aim of this review was to determine the indication-specific weight loss and diabetes remission after SG conversion to RYGB (STOBY).

Purpose: This study aims to investigate the rate of short- and long-term complications as well as the need for operative revisions after abdominoplasty for patients following surgical versus non-surgical weight loss methods.

Methods: This is a retrospective chart review that enrolled consecutive patients undergoing abdominoplasty across a 5-year period, aged 18 years and above, opting for abdominoplasty after weight loss achieved through bariatric surgery or diet and exercise alone.

Results: A total of 364 patients lost weight through bariatric surgery and 106 by diet and exercise alone.

Objective: The novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has triggered public anxiety around the world. So far, the evidence suggests that prevention on a public scale is the most effective health measure for thwarting the progress of COVID-19. Another critical aspect of preventing COVID-19 is contact tracing.

Background: The transmissibility and associated morbidity and mortality of severe acute respiratory syndrome-related coronavirus (SARS-Cov-2), have overwhelmed worldwide healthcare systems, resulting in an urgent need to understand this virus and its associated effects. The aim of our study was to identify patient symptoms, clinical characteristics, laboratory, and radiology findings that are associated with serious morbidity and mortality in COVID-19 patients.

Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted in Jaber Al Ahmad Hospital, the designated COVID-19 center in Kuwait between August 1st, 2020 and January 31st, 2021.

Article Synopsis
  • Emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants are driving a global health crisis, necessitating an understanding of their evolution to inform interventions.
  • A study employed a Bayesian phylodynamic method to track five variants (Alpha, Beta, Delta, Kappa, and Eta) in the Arabian Peninsula, uncovering distinct patterns related to air travel and public health measures.
  • The Alpha, Beta, and Delta variants showed marked changes in spread and introduction patterns linked to various regions, while Kappa and Eta variants demonstrated limited spread, suggesting they are less critical for genomic monitoring in the area.

Introduction: The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in governments implementing new regulations to divert healthcare resources, which in return led to the postponement of elective and semi-elective surgical procedures. Therefore, many surgeons and as well as surgeons in training reported feeling redundant, which eventually resulted in psychological distress. This study aimed to assess the sociodemographic differences in the psychological impact resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic and outline the effect it had on surgical training.
