Understanding the microbial ecology of a system allows linking members of the community and their metabolic functions to the performance of the wastewater bioreactor. This study provided a comprehensive conceptual framework for microbial communities in wastewater treatment electro-bioreactors (EBRs). The model was based on data acquired from monitoring the effect of altering different bioreactor operational parameters, such as current density and hydraulic retention time, on the microbial communities of an EBR and its nutrient removal efficiency.

Germplasm collections are rich sources of genetic variation to improve crops for many valuable traits. Nested association mapping (NAM) populations can overcome the limitations of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) in germplasm collections by reducing the effect of population structure. We exploited the genetic diversity of the USDA-ARS wheat (Triticum aestivum L.

Article Synopsis
  • Terminal sterilization of bone allografts using gamma radiation is necessary to lower infection risks, but it can compromise their mechanical properties.
  • This research investigates the effect of free radical scavengers, hydroxytyrosol (HT) and alpha lipoic acid (ALA), on the structural and chemical changes in gamma-sterilized cortical bone.
  • Results showed that using HT and ALA before gamma radiation helped maintain the chemical structure of bone, particularly the ratios of amide I and II and collagen cross-links, which were negatively affected by the radiation treatment.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to establish reference values for visceral adipose tissue (VAT) mass measured by DXA in a cohort of 677 men and 738 women aged 18-65 from Western Australia.
  • High correlations between VAT mass and waist circumference were found in men, while in women, only the waist-height ratio showed a strong correlation.
  • The research provides the first reference data for DXA-derived VAT mass in Western Australians and identifies anthropometric measures that can effectively detect excessive VAT mass in both genders.

Background: Hip hemiarthroplasty is a well-established treatment of displaced femoral neck fracture, although debate exists over whether cemented or uncemented fixation is superior. Uncemented prostheses have typically been used in younger, healthier patients and cemented prostheses in older patients with less-stable bone. Also, earlier research has suggested that bone cement has cytotoxic effects and may trigger cardiovascular and respiratory adverse events.

There has been considerable recent interest in employing computer models to investigate the relationship between the structure of a molecule and its dermal penetration. Molecular permeation across the epidermis has previously been demonstrated to be determined by a number of physicochemical properties, for example, the lipophilicity, molecular weight and hydrogen bonding ability of the permeant. However little attention has been paid to modeling the combined effects of permeant properties in tandem with the properties of vehicles used to deliver those permeants or to whether data obtained using synthetic membranes can be correlated with those obtained using human epidermis.

Background: The trial aimed to prospectively compare the functional outcomes of patients undergoing arthroscopic rotator cuff repair using transosseous-equivalent double-row (TEDR) or single-row (SR) suture anchor techniques at 3 years postoperatively for both large (>3 cm) and small (<3 cm) tears.

Methods: Eighty patients with a symptomatic and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-proven full-thickness rotator cuff tear, who had failed conservative management of at least 6 months' duration and who had a complete passive range of motion of the affected shoulder, were enrolled in the trial. Patients were randomized to TEDR repair (n = 40) or SR repair (n = 40).

Neurodegenerative diseases have different types according to the onset of the disease, the time course, and the underlying pathology. Although the dogma that brain cells cannot regenerate has changed, the normal regenerative process of the brain is usually not sufficient to restore brain tissue defects after different pathological insults. Stem cell therapy and more recently cell reprogramming could achieve success in the process of brain renewal.
