Article Synopsis
  • Microscopic unilateral laminotomy for bilateral decompression (ULBD) is a minimally invasive surgery for lumbar spinal stenosis that may offer advantages like reduced instability and improved outcomes compared to traditional laminectomy (CL).
  • A scoping review covering studies from 1990 to 2022 found 17 relevant articles, with different research designs, including randomized trials and retrospective analyses, examining the effects of ULBD.
  • The findings suggest ULBD might result in shorter surgery times and less blood loss while maintaining similar clinical outcomes compared to CL, but the limited and varying quality of the studies makes it hard to draw definitive conclusions.

Article Synopsis
  • - Scoliosis in children is a common spinal deformity that may lead to worsening aesthetics and could require surgical intervention, especially when conservative treatments fail; sometimes, it's linked with intramedullary tumors, complicating management.
  • - The study details a surgical method that combines titanium implants for initial correction of scoliosis in two adolescents with tumors, which are later swapped for carbon fiber implants to preserve the correction and enable better post-op imaging.
  • - The proposed technique is noted for being safe, reliable, and effective, allowing for improved MRI evaluations post-surgery while minimizing metal-related imaging issues.

Purpose: Paediatric spine trauma is uncommon and is managed differently from adults due to the anatomical differences of the paediatric spine. The paediatric spine is less ossified, with lax ligaments and a higher fulcrum in the c-spine which results in a different pattern of injuries. The aim of this study is to provide a contemporary audit of paediatric spinal trauma.

Posterior fossa syndrome (PFS), or cerebellar mutism syndrome (CMS), is a collection of neurological symptoms that occur following surgical resection of a posterior fossa tumour, and is characterised by either a reduction or an absence of speech. Some authors suggest that CM is only one symptom of the CMS complex that also includes ataxia, hypotonia and irritability as well as cranial nerve deficits, neurobehavioral changes and urinary retention or incontinence. It is seen almost exclusively in children.

Schwannomas of the skull base can pose a surgical challenge due to their anatomical location. To date extensive craniofacial approaches have had to be used to access these lesions. We present a patient where an expanded endoscopic endonasal approach was used to address a large skull base schwannoma with good results.

Objective: To quantify the frequency and severity of nasal morbidity following endoscopic endonasal skull base surgery using patient-reported outcome measures.

Methods: Retrospective review and follow-up of all patients who underwent endoscopic endonasal skull base surgery at University Hospital Southampton between January 2007 and December 2011. Demographic data were collated from case notes and patients were asked a standardised questionnaire by telephone interview.
