Background: This study aims to examine the impact of sociodemographic and clinical factors on hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) mortality in New South Wales (NSW), Australia.

Methods: We conducted a 15-year retrospective study (2001-2015) using data linkage of health records and cancer registry databases, to identify all HCC cases and analyse HCC-related and all-cause mortality rates. Location-based socioeconomic status (SES) was determined using the Socioeconomic Indexes for Areas (SEIFA).

Background And Aim: Most patients with cirrhosis have compensated disease and are cared for in primary care; however, the exact epidemiology within Australia remains largely unknown. The aim of this study was to assess cirrhosis care in an Australian primary care setting by evaluating rates of cirrhosis diagnosis, appropriate hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) surveillance and specialist communication.

Methods: Electronic medical records in consenting general practices were reviewed using the "Liver Toolkit" to identify patients with an existing cirrhosis diagnosis.

Article Synopsis
  • - The global prevalence of Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), formerly known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), is increasing, but effective treatments are still scarce.
  • - Research is focusing on the connection between the gut microbiome and MASLD, with the potential for gut-targeted therapies to help manage or prevent the disease.
  • - This review will explore how the gut microbiome's structure and function relate to MASLD, evaluate gut microbiome signatures for diagnosing disease severity, and look into both current and potential therapies targeting the interactions between the gut microbiome and liver.

Background: Identifying patients with undiagnosed advanced chronic liver disease (ACLD) is a public health challenge. Patients with advanced fibrosis or compensated cirrhosis have much better outcomes than those with decompensated disease and may be eligible for interventions to prevent disease progression.

Methods: A cloud-based software solution ("the Liver Toolkit") was developed to access primary care practice software to identify patients at risk of ACLD.

Background: Colorectal cancer is the second most common cause of cancer-related mortality in Australia. As such, timely access to colonoscopy following a positive faecal occult blood test (FOBT) is an important aspect of the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program to reduce morbidity and mortality related to this condition. To reduce waiting times, a Sydney-based referral centre introduced a nurse-led virtual clinic (VC) in order to facilitate direct access colonoscopy for patients referred with a positive FOBT.

Background And Aim: Liver cirrhosis is the primary risk factor for the development of hepatocellular carcinoma. Most conditions that lead to cirrhosis are treatable, or modifiable. Therefore, a community-based screening program targeting high-risk groups was designed for early diagnosis and intervention of liver disease, to offset the rising burden of hepatocellular carcinoma in Australia.

Our aim was to evaluate the protective effect of lipoic acid (LA) on fetal outcome of diabetic mothers. Diabetes was induced in female rats using streptozotocin and rats were made pregnant. Pregnant control (group 1; = 9; and group 2; = 7) or pregnant diabetic (group 3; = 10; and group 4; = 8) rats were treated daily with either LA (groups 2 and 4) or vehicle (groups 1 and 3) between gestational days 0 and 15.

The current study investigated the effect of natural diosgenin extracted from fenugreek seeds, in comparison with the pure standard diosgenin, plus chromium chloride (CrCl3) supplementation on high-cholesterol fed Japanese quails. Quails were randomly divided into four groups. Group one (n = 25) fed experimental diet only (control; contained basal diet supplemented with 1% cholesterol), group 2 (n = 20) fed experimental diet supplemented with CrCl3 only (400 microg kg(-1) of body weight), groups 3 and 4 (n = 30 per group) were fed experimental diet supplemented with either 0.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease characterized by hyperglycemia with various complications including diabetic hand syndrome (DHS); a condition characterized by association of distinct entities; limited joint mobility (LJM), Dupuytren's disease (DD), flexor tenosynovitis (FTS) and carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) resulting in significant morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of these changes and their association to diabetes duration. We studied 142 type 2 and 45 type 1 DM patients and investigated the presence of these hand changes and peripheral neuropathy (PNP).
