Background: Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) can lead to metabolic syndrome (MS) and is implicated in ADT-resistance. Metformin showed antineoplastic activity through mTOR inhibition secondary AMPK-activation.

Materials And Methods: To investigate whether metformin mitigated ADT-related MS, we conducted a randomized double-blind phase II trial of metformin 500 mg TID or placebo in non-diabetic patients with biochemically-relapsed or advanced PC due for ADT.

The Bovine Genome Database (BGD; http://BovineGenome.org) strives to improve annotation of the bovine genome and to integrate the genome sequence with other genomics data. BGD includes GBrowse genome browsers, the Apollo Annotation Editor, a quantitative trait loci (QTL) viewer, BLAST databases and gene pages.

Background: A key open question in biology is if genes are physically clustered with respect to their known functions or phenotypic effects. This is of particular interest for Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL) where a QTL region could contain a number of genes that contribute to the trait being measured.

Results: We observed a significant increase in gene density within QTL regions compared to non-QTL regions and/or the entire bovine genome.

Article Synopsis
  • - The cattle genome was sequenced to enhance the understanding of ruminant biology and evolution, containing at least 22,000 genes with 14,345 orthologs shared across seven mammal species.
  • - Certain regions in the cattle genome have a higher density of segmental duplications, indicating unique evolutionary changes, particularly in genes linked to lactation and immune responses.
  • - This genome sequence serves as a valuable resource for studying mammalian evolution and improving livestock genetics, which can lead to better milk and meat production.

Background: Cattle are important agriculturally and relevant as a model organism. Previously described genetic and radiation hybrid (RH) maps of the bovine genome have been used to identify genomic regions and genes affecting specific traits. Application of these maps to identify influential genetic polymorphisms will be enhanced by integration with each other and with bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) libraries.
