Article Synopsis
  • - The study evaluated the effectiveness of atraumatic restorative treatment (ART) for elderly patients needing home dental care, using a cohort of 35 individuals who received 103 restorations.
  • - One year post-treatment, ART showed a high success rate (73.8% of restorations remained without replacement), with specific surface types exhibiting better outcomes than others.
  • - The findings suggest that ART is an effective and practical option for providing dental care in home settings for the elderly, who often face mobility challenges.

An 84-year-old female patient presented for routine CT angiography (CTA) of the arteries of the neck following right carotid endarterectomy for 75% stenosis, which had been performed without incident 2 months prior. The patient had also been diagnosed with 72% stenosis of the left carotid artery, although it was asymptomatic and thus endarterectomy was not required. The medical history included arterial hypertension and an incomplete left bundle branch block.

Proximal jejunal enteroliths, a rare form of small bowel pathology, involve calculi formation within the proximal ileum, leading to complications such as bowel obstruction and perforation. Due to their rarity and nonspecific presentation, enteroliths pose diagnostic and management challenges for clinicians. A 73-year-old male with a history of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth was admitted with acute abdominal pain, small bowel obstruction, and hypovolemic haemorrhagic shock.

Immersive virtual reality (IVR) and augmented reality (AR) are emerging technologies with significant potential in ultrasound education. IVR, utilizing head-mounted devices (HMDs), and AR, enhancing real-world views with digital overlays, have demonstrated their value in various educational and training scenarios. This narrative review examines the use of IVR and AR in ultrasound education, evaluating their effectiveness compared to traditional methods.

Introduction: Home care provided by dentists is crucial for ensuring adequate oral care. However, oral health professionals face challenges in delivering treatment at patients' residences due to a lack of resources. Our objective was to explore dentists' perspectives and experiences of dental home care and potential challenges for its implementation.

Lipiodol, an oil-based contrast medium first introduced in 1944, was commonly used for various radiological exams until the 1980s, when it was replaced by water-soluble contrast media due to complications such as arachnoiditis and chronic irritations. Due to its slow resorption rate, asymptomatic lipiodol deposits can occasionally be found incidentally. This case report describes a 93-year-old man who presented to the emergency department after a fall.

Unlabelled: Idiopathic focal unilateral skull thinning is a rare finding. An explanation, such as trauma or disease, can often be found. However, in some cases, no explanation is forthcoming, and thus, we must look further into their history for a possible cause.

Article Synopsis
  • Many kids feel anxious and scared before medical procedures, especially when they have to get an MRI, which is a big machine that takes pictures of the inside of your body.
  • Researchers tested if using virtual reality (VR) could help reduce this anxiety by letting kids experience a pretend MRI with sounds and sights before their actual appointment.
  • The study found that kids who used VR felt less anxious before their MRI, which could help make the experience easier for them, even though it didn't change the success rate of the MRI itself.

Renal failure is relatively common in children presenting to the emergency department, suggesting that the assumption of normal renal function is not always valid. Although some computed tomography (CT) scans necessitate the use of intravenous contrast, one should probably consider whether a blood test is necessary to assess the patient's renal function and possibly consider other imaging modalities before proceeding. With no pediatric-specific guidelines and no validated pediatric prevention strategies, further research is needed to establish clear recommendations for contrast-enhanced exams in stable and unstable pediatric patients with unknown renal function.

Virtual reality (VR) is an emerging method that can be used in many scenarios involving children. VR has been increasingly studied as it has become cheaper, more widely available, and of better quality. In this review of current meta-analyses on the use of VR in children in the medical setting, we examined its role in 5 broad settings where it is used to alleviate pain and anxiety as well as in therapeutic scenarios.

Knee pain is one of the most common indications for radiography in the evaluation of musculoskeletal disorders in children and adolescents. According to international guidelines, knee radiographs should be obtained when there is the suspicion of an effusion, limited motion, pain to palpation, inability to bear weight, mechanical symptoms (such as "locking"), and persistent knee pain after therapy. When indicated, radiographs can provide crucial information for the clinical decision-making process.

Introduction: Accurate bracket positioning remains challenging. To avoid angulation errors, some recommend examining the panoramic radiograph during bonding. However, it can cause distortions.

Introduction: Fibromatosis colli (FC) is a rare pseudotumor of the sternocleidomastoid muscle with an incidence of 0.4%, generally diagnosed using ultrasound between 2 and 4 weeks of age. This is an important entity considering the clinical concerns it causes due to its appearance as a cervical mass with torticollis.

We explore the use of shear wave elastography (SWE) for assessing muscle stiffness and treatment response in cerebral palsy (CP) children by way of a systematic review. SWE offers real-time muscle stiffness measurements, showing significant differences between CP patients and controls. Studies suggest that SWE can be used to follow muscle stiffness post-botulinum toxin treatment, correlating with clinical improvement.

To assess real-world clinical outcomes with standard therapies for advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (aNSCLC) with METexon14 skipping mutation (METex14). In an oncologists-led retrospective review of medical records, data were abstracted and analyzed for patients initiating first-line (1L) systemic therapy after 1 January 2017. In total 287 aNSCLC patients with METex14, the real-world best overall response rate was 73.

Chest compressions, used in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), cause rib and sternum fractures in around 79% and 54% of patients, respectively. Spinal fractures resulting from CPR are far rarer. We present the case of a 70-year-old man who underwent mechanical CPR after choking whilst eating.

Article Synopsis
  • Macrocephaly is when head size is significantly larger than average for a child's age and sex, and the case presented involves a 16-month-old boy who had congenital progressive macrocephaly and required a shunt for hydrocephalus.
  • After initially experiencing complications following the shunt placement, including seizures and anomalies in brain wave patterns, further examination revealed abnormal brain blood vessels indicative of a dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF).
  • The DAVF, which is a rare but significant cause of macrocephaly, was treated successfully with interventional procedures, highlighting the importance of carefully monitoring head size in diagnosing related conditions.

We briefly describe the case of a 4-year-old girl, referred for imaging of a small, firm, round, skin-colored, subcutaneous nodule that suddenly appeared at her right sternoclavicular junction. A plain radiograph was non-contributory, but ultrasonography revealed a small cystic structure, leading to the diagnosis of a sternoclavicular ganglion cyst. Sternoclavicular ganglion cysts are a rare diagnosis, with only seven reported pediatric cases.

van Neck-Odelberg disease, a condition involving the ischiopubic synchondrosis in children, is a commonly encountered but poorly known ailment, which is now considered a normal variant. Symptoms can include pain, discomfort, and fever, leading to van Neck-Odelberg disease often being discovered in the context of patients presenting with non-specific clinical manifestations. In this essay, we describe what is currently known about van Neck-Odelberg disease and illustrate the condition using images acquired from multiple patients, with some using multiple imaging techniques from the same patients.

Background: Several pathological conditions can lead to variations in bone mineral content during growth. When assessing bone age, bone mineral content can be estimated without supplementary cost and irradiation. Manual assessment of bone quality using the Exton-Smith index (ESI) and automated assessment of the bone health index (BHI) provided by the BoneXpert® software are available but still not validated in different ethnic groups.
