: Biliary fistulas (BFs) occur in approximately 3-8% of patients undergoing pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD), and the bile duct diameter ≤ 5 mm is the most important risk factor. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of biodegradable biliary stents (BSs) in reducing complications in patients undergoing robotic pancreaticoduodenectomy (RPD) with a bile duct diameter of ≤5 mm. : A retrospective single-centre observational study was conducted.

Introduction: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are linked to higher rates of psychiatric disorders in adults. Previous neuroimaging studies with small samples have shown associations between ACEs and alterations in brain volume, connectivity, and blood flow. However, no study has explored these associations in a large clinical population to identify brain regions that may mediate the relationship between ACEs and psychiatric diagnoses.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study evaluated the efficacy of the MVA-BN-RSV vaccine, designed for older adults (≥60 years), against respiratory disease caused by RSV during the 2022-2023 season, involving 18,348 participants who received either the vaccine or a placebo.
  • - Vaccine efficacy was reported as 42.9% against RSV-associated lower respiratory tract disease (LRTD) with 3 symptoms and 59.0% against LRTD with 2 symptoms; however, the primary endpoint was not met due to the lower confidence interval being below a predetermined success criterion.
  • - The vaccine demonstrated mild to moderate side effects, showed promise by confirming immunogenicity (increased antibody responses), but provided

Several studies have described the proteomic profile of different immune cell types, but only a few have also analysed the content of their delivered small extracellular vesicles (sEVs). The aim of the present study was to compare the protein signature of sEVs delivered from granulocytes (i.e.

Background: Although cases of rabies in international travellers are uncommon, they are a fatal risk which can be alleviated through vaccination prior to travel. As international travel recovers post-COVID, it is vital that travellers are made aware of the risk of rabies when travelling to endemic countries and supported to receive the vaccine when eligible.

Methods: Online surveys were conducted in the US, Germany, Sweden and Switzerland between November 2022-January 2023 with both patients and healthcare providers (HCPs).

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how asthma affects naïve/memory lymphocyte proportions through CD26 levels, aiming to link asthma phenotype/severity with variations in CD26 among various lymphocyte populations.* -
  • Methods included flow cytometry analysis of blood samples from healthy and asthma patients to measure CD26 levels and characterize CD4CD26 T cell subsets, leading to the identification of four distinct inflammatory profiles.* -
  • Results showed that neutrophilic asthma had lower CD4CD26 cells correlated with inflammation, while eosinophilic asthma had expanded CD26 subsets, particularly in atopic patients, indicating a role in chronic inflammation associated with allergic asthma.*

Article Synopsis
  • Carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (CRPA) is a major public health concern in Chile, mainly linked to ventilator-associated pneumonia, with limited molecular epidemiological data available.
  • A study characterized the phylogenomics and molecular characteristics of ST654 CRPA isolates collected between 2016 and 2022, involving 89 samples from various hospitals.
  • Results showed that 38.2% of the strains belonged to the high-risk ST654 clone, primarily associated with KPC production, a broad resistome, and specific virulence factors, highlighting the need for ongoing molecular surveillance.

Background: Work-related injuries and diseases have a significant impact on workers and their families, society, and the economy. There is a gap in the literature regarding the structures, content, quality, and outcomes of international occupational health systems serving injured and ill workers. This global round table was an attempt to elucidate, evaluate, and identify areas needing improvement.

In pregnancy, a plethora of factors causes changes in maternal immunity. Uveitis flare-ups are more frequent in the first trimester and in undertreated patients. Management of non-infectious uveitis during pregnancy remains understudied.

In recent years, significant progress has been made in laser wakefield acceleration (LWFA), both regarding the increase in electron energy, charge and stability as well as the reduction of bandwidth of electron bunches. Simultaneous optimization of these parameters is, however, still the subject of an ongoing effort in the community to reach sufficient beam quality for next generation's compact accelerators. In this report, we show the design of slit-shaped gas nozzles providing centimeter-long supersonic gas jets that can be used as targets for the acceleration of electrons to the GeV regime.

Introduction: Purslane (Portulaca oleracea L.) is a non-conventional food plant used extensively in folk medicine and classified as a multipurpose plant species, serving as a source of features of direct importance to the agricultural and agri-industrial sectors. This species is considered a suitable model to study the mechanisms behind resistance to several abiotic stresses including salinity.

Unlabelled: Extubation failure (EF) after cardiac surgery is associated with poorer outcomes. Approximately 50% of children with Down syndrome (DS) have congenital heart disease. Our primary aim was to describe the frequency of EF and identify risk factors for its occurrence in a population of patients with DS after cardiac surgery.

Objective: To describe the IMPACTO-MR, a Brazilian nationwide intensive care unit platform study focused on the impact of health care-associated infections due to multidrug-resistant bacteria.

Methods: We described the IMPACTO-MR platform, its development, criteria for intensive care unit selection, characterization of core data collection, objectives, and future research projects to be held within the platform.

Results: The core data were collected using the Epimed Monitor System® and consisted of demographic data, comorbidity data, functional status, clinical scores, admission diagnosis and secondary diagnoses, laboratory, clinical, and microbiological data, and organ support during intensive care unit stay, among others.

Dogs are thought to be highly exposed to environmental pathogenic leptospires, possibly acting as potential sources of infection for zoonotic transmission. Vaccination stands as the cornerstone strategy to prevent disease and urinary shedding in dogs, yet the success of vaccination is highly dependent on the correspondence of leptospires circulating locally with those used in vaccine compositions. To provide evidence for vaccine compatibility, and to assess whether there are regional differences on serogroup distribution, we conducted a systematic review with meta-analysis on serological data, characterization of leptospiral isolates and risk factors for seropositivity in dogs from Brazil.

Introduction: The definition of asthma phenotypes has not been fully established, neither there are cluster studies showing homogeneous results to solidly establish clear phenotypes. The purpose of this study was to develop a classification algorithm based on unsupervised cluster analysis, identifying clusters that represent clinically relevant asthma phenotypes that may share asthma-related outcomes.

Methods: We performed a multicentre prospective cohort study, including adult patients with asthma (N=512) from the MEGA study (Mechanisms underlying the Genesis and evolution of Asthma).

Xenobiotic reductase B (XenB) catalyzes the reduction of the aromatic ring or nitro groups of nitroaromatic compounds with methyl, amino or hydroxyl radicals. This reaction is of biotechnological interest for bioremediation, the reuse of industrial waste or the activation of prodrugs. However, the structural factors that explain the binding of XenB to different substrates are unknown.

Helicobacter pylori colonizes half of the world's population and is responsible for a significant disease burden by causing gastritis, peptic ulcers, and gastric cancer. The development of host inflammation drives these diseases, but there are still open questions in the field about how H. pylori controls this process.

The antiviral endoribonuclease, RNase L, is activated by the mammalian innate immune response to destroy host and viral RNA to ultimately reduce viral gene expression. Herein, we show that RNase L and RNase L-mediated mRNA decay are primarily localized to the cytoplasm. Consequently, RNA-binding proteins (RBPs) translocate from the cytoplasm to the nucleus upon RNase L activation due to the presence of intact nuclear RNA.
