Genetic diversity of Fusarium graminearum sensu lato isolates from wheat associated with Fusarium Head Blight in diverse geographic locations of Argentina.

Fusarium Head Blight is an important wheat disease in the Argentine Pampas region, being Fusarium graminearum the predominant pathogen. DNA polymorphism of the isolates was analyzed by IGS-RFLP and ISSR. IGS-RFLP and ISSR profiling were carried out using six endonucleases and eight primers, respectively.

Scent of a Dragonfly: Sex Recognition in a Polymorphic Coenagrionid.

In polymorphic damselflies discrimination of females from males is complex owing to the presence of androchrome and gynochrome females. To date there is no evidence that damselflies use sensory modalities other than vision (and tactile stimuli) in mate searching and sex recognition. The results of the present behavioural and electrophysiological investigations on Ischnura elegans, a polymorphic damselfly, support our hypothesis that chemical cues could be involved in Odonata sex recognition.

Refractory absence seizures: An Italian multicenter retrospective study.

Background: To evaluate evidence and prognosis of refractory cases of absence seizures.

Methods: Subjects with refractory absence seizures were identified retrospectively in 17 Italian epilepsy pediatrics Centers. We analyzed age at onset, family history, presence of myoclonic components, seizure frequency, treatment with antiepileptic drugs (AEDs), interictal electroencephalography (EEG) and neuropsychological assessment.

Are pharmacogenomic biomarkers an effective tool to predict taxane toxicity and outcome in breast cancer patients? Literature review.

Purpose: Breast cancer is a heterogeneous disease, characterized by various molecular phenotypes that correlate with different prognosis and response to treatments. Taxanes are some of the most active chemotherapeutic agents for breast cancer; however, their utilization is limited, due to hematologic and cumulative neurotoxicity on treated patients. To understand why only some patients experience severe adverse effects and why patients respond and develop resistance with different rates to taxane therapy, the metabolic pathways of these drugs should be completely unraveled.

Serum Cystatin C for the Diagnosis of Acute Kidney Injury in Patients Admitted in the Emergency Department.

Background: Early diagnosis of acute kidney injury (AKI) at emergency department (ED) is a challenging issue. Current diagnostic criteria for AKI poorly recognize early renal dysfunction and may cause delayed diagnosis. We evaluated the use of serum cystatin C (CysC) for the early and accurate diagnosis of AKI in patients hospitalized from the ED.

The larva of the dragonfly Onychogomphus forcipatus (Anisoptera, Gomphidae) has a burrowing lifestyle and antennae composed of four short and broad segments (scape, pedicel and a two-segmented flagellum). The present ultrastructural investigation revealed that different sensilla and one gland are located on the antenna. There is a great diversity of mechanoreceptors of different kinds.

Taxane induced neuropathy in patients affected by breast cancer: Literature review.

Taxane induced neuropathy (TIN) is the most limiting side effect of taxane based chemotherapy, relative to the majority of breast cancer patients undergoing therapy with both docetaxel and paclitaxel. The symptoms begin symmetrically from the toes, because the tips of the longest nerves are affected for first. The patients report sensory symptoms such as paresthesia, dysesthesia, numbness, electric shock-like sensation, motor impairment and neuropathic pain.

Antennal gustatory perception and behavioural responses in Trissolcus brochymenae females.

Trissolcus brochymenae (Hymenoptera: Platygastridae) is an egg parasitoid that could be used to control stink bugs like Murgantia histrionica (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae), a pest of brassicaceous crops. Before laying their eggs, parasitoid females spend considerable time examining the substrate with their antennae, which are also used during feeding and mating behaviours. This suggests that contact chemoreception plays a prominent role in many aspects of parasitoid ecology.

New phenotype and neonatal onset of sodium channel myotonia in a child with a novel mutation of SCN4A gene.

Myotonia is rare in newborns, and not well-known. Mutations of the skeletal muscle sodium channel gene SCN4A are associated with several neuromuscular disorders including sodium channel myotonias. We reported a 4-year-old female who presented with diffuse stiffness, bilateral clubfoot, hip dislocation, facial dysmorphisms and myotonia at birth.

On and off metronomic oral vinorelbine in elderly women with advanced breast cancer.

Background: Elderly patients with metastatic breast cancer (MBC) have more problems receiving chemotherapy than younger patients, especially with the presence of multiple comorbidities, adverse drug events and functional decline. Low-dose oral administration of cytotoxic agents such as vinorelbine, a semisynthetic vinca alkaloid that interferes with microtubule assembly, leading to arrest of cell division, is usually effective and well tolerated.

Methods: From February 2010 to February 2014, 32 patients with MBC, median age 76 years (range 69-83) were treated with oral vinorelbine 30 mg (total dose), one day on and one day off, until disease progression or unacceptable toxicity levels were reported.

Sucrose in cyanobacteria: from a salt-response molecule to play a key role in nitrogen fixation.

In the biosphere, sucrose is mainly synthesized in oxygenic photosynthetic organisms, such as cyanobacteria, green algae and land plants, as part of the carbon dioxide assimilation pathway. Even though its central position in the functional biology of plants is well documented, much less is known about the role of sucrose in cyanobacteria. In those prokaryotes, sucrose accumulation has been associated with salt acclimation, and considered as a compatible solute in low-salt tolerant strains.

[Long-term survival metastatic ovarian cancer elderly patient].

Ovarian cancer is the sixth diagnosed cancer among women worldwide, it has a high mortality and in most cases it's diagnosed in advanced stage (stage III-IV). Combination platinum-paclitaxel chemotherapy administered every 3 weeks is considered the gold standard for first-line treatment of patients with advanced ovarian cancer. Elderly patients with ovarian cancer represents a subgroup with poor prognosis because they are often treated less radically for comorbidities and age.

Preoperative evaluation before MitraClip®: present and future perspective.

Mitral regurgitation (MR) is the second most common heart valve disease worldwide. Currently, the management of MR is based on medical therapy (including biventricular pacing), surgery (mitral valve replacement or repair) and percutaneous therapy. However, in spite of guideline recommendations, 50% of individuals assessed in the Euro Heart Survey were not referred to surgical intervention due to comorbidities or real or perceived high risks for cardiac surgery; thus, in recent years, the focus of research has shifted to the development of percutaneous approaches to treat severe MR in order to restore valve function in a minimally invasive fashion.

Egg parasitoid attraction toward induced plant volatiles is disrupted by a non-host herbivore attacking above or belowground plant organs.

Plants respond to insect oviposition by emission of oviposition-induced plant volatiles (OIPVs) which can recruit egg parasitoids of the attacking herbivore. To date, studies demonstrating egg parasitoid attraction to OIPVs have been carried out in tritrophic systems consisting of one species each of plant, herbivore host, and the associated egg parasitoid. Less attention has been given to plants experiencing multiple attacks by host and non-host herbivores that potentially could interfere with the recruitment of egg parasitoids as a result of modifications to the OIPV blend.

Chemotherapy of rare skin adnexal tumors: a review of literature.

Malignant skin adnexal tumors are rare neoplasms which are derived from adnexal epithelial structures of the skin: hair follicle, or sebaceous, apocrine or eccrine glands. Among them, eccrine porocarcinoma is the most frequent, with an aggressive behavior compared to other more common forms of non-melanoma skin cancer. Only few reports describe the treatment of metastatic adnexal tumors, and there is no consensus about the better strategy of chemotherapy.

Neuropsychological implications of adjunctive levetiracetam in childhood epilepsy.

Introduction: Levetiracetam (LEV) is an effective antiepileptic drug also used in childhood and adolescence. Literature data regarding the long-term effects of LEV in childhood epilepsy and based on extensive neuropsychological evaluations using standardized tools are still scanty. Our study aimed to address this topic.

The sense of smell in Odonata: an electrophysiological screening.

Volatile chemicals mediate a great range of intra- and interspecific signalling and information in insects. Olfaction has been widely investigated mostly in Neoptera while the knowledge of this sense in most basal insects such as Paleoptera (Odonata and Ephemeroptera) is still poor. In the present study we show the results of an electrophysiological screening on two model species, Libellula depressa (Libellulidae) and Ischnura elegans (Coenagrionidae), representatives of the two Odonata suborders Anisoptera and Zygoptera, with the aim to deep the knowledge on the sense of smell of this insect order.

Manipulation of radiation-induced bystander effect in prostate adenocarcinoma by dose and tumor differentiation grade: in vitro study.

Purpose: This in vitro study evaluated the ability of prostate adenocarcinoma (ADC) cells to induce radiation-induced bystander effect (RIBE) exploring the factors that may be responsible and affect its intensity. The idea was to mimic a strong, clinically applicable RIBE that could lead to the development of innovative approaches in modern radiotherapy of prostate cancer, especially for those patients with hormone-refractory ADC in which radiotherapy might have a limited role.

Materials And Methods: Two human prostate cancer cell lines of different differentiation, PC-3 and DU-145, have been irradiated using wide range of doses to obtain radiation-conditioned medium (RCM), which was used to treat the unirradiated cells and to evaluate the cytokines level.

Usefulness of combining galectin-3 and BIVA assessments in predicting short- and long-term events in patients admitted for acute heart failure.

Introduction: Acute heart failure (AHF) is associated with a higher risk for the occurrence of rehospitalization and death. Galectin-3 (GAL3) is elevated in AHF patients and is an indicator in predicting short-term mortality. The total body water using bioimpedance vector analysis (BIVA) is able to identify mortality within AHF patients.

Elderly woman with triple-negative metastatic breast cancer successfully treated with metronomic capecitabine.

Triple-negative breast cancer phenotype (estrogen receptor-, progesterone receptor- and human epidermal growth receptor 2-negative) is one of the most aggressive molecular subtypes, accounting for 15-20% of all breast tumors. There is no standard treatment for this setting of patients except anthracyclines and taxanes, but not all elderly patients can tolerate these kinds of agents. We describe the case of an elderly woman affected by triple-negative breast cancer with bone and brain metastases who has been treated for five years with metronomic capecitabine.

Functional characterization of Synechococcus amylosucrase and fructokinase encoding genes discovers two novel actors on the stage of cyanobacterial sucrose metabolism.

Plants and most cyanobacteria metabolize sucrose (Suc) with a similar set of enzymes. In Synechococcus sp. PCC 7002, a marine cyanobacterium strain, genes involved in Suc synthesis (spsA and sppA) have been characterized; however, its breakdown was still unknown.

Structural myocardial alterations in diabetes and hypertension: the role of galectin-3.

Background: Galectin-3 is a protein widely distributed in the heart, brain and blood vessels, and has a regulatory role in inflammation, immunology and cancer. Many studies demonstrated that the increased level of galectin-3 is associated with progressive fibrosis and stiffening of the myocardium. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of galectin-3 in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D) and/or arterial hypertension (HT).

A torted wandering spleen: a case report.

Introduction: A torted wandering spleen is a rare clinical occurrence with fewer than 500 cases reported and an incidence of less than 0.2%. It is brought about through laxity of the gastrosplenic and splenorenal ligaments; however, the precise aetiology remains unknown.

Comparison between white blood cell count, procalcitonin and C reactive protein as diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers of infection or sepsis in patients presenting to emergency department.

Background: Procalcitonin (PCT) is currently the most studied infection biomarker and its blood levels seem to mirror the severity of illness and outcome. PCT is widely used together with other biomarkers, such as white blood cells (WBC) count and C reactive protein (CRP), in order to guide antibiotic therapy. This study aimed to verify the diagnostic and prognostic power of WBC, CRP and PCT in patients with suspected infection in emergency department (ED).
