Published data from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region indicate suboptimal quality of cancer care, while the World Health Organization predicts an increase in cancer cases in developing countries. Major advances in breast cancer management mandate the development of guidelines to improve the quality and efficacy of oncology practice in the MENA region. A Breast Cancer Regional Guidelines Committee was organized and activated, comprising experts from various regional cancer institutions.

Purpose: To assess the systematic errors in liver methylene fraction (LMF) resulting from fat-fat interference effects with dual- and triple-echo gradient-recalled-echo Dual/Triple GRE) sequences and to test the robustness of these sequences after iron overloading.

Materials And Methods: Forty type-2 diabetic patients underwent LMF measurement by 3.0T ¹H magnetic resonance spectroscopy (corrected for T1 and T2 decays) as the reference standard and liver fat fraction (%Fat) measurement by four Dual/Triple GRE sequences with 20° and 60° flip angle (α), corrected for T1 recovery.

Background And Objectives: Cardiac events and death are not uncommon in adults with beta-thalassemia (b-TM) taking deferoxamine (DFO) monotherapy because of poor compliance and possibly the less effectiveness of DFO in controlling cardiac iron overload. We sought to assess compliance with DFO, the percentage of shift to other iron chelators, and the occurrence of cardiac siderosis, and cardiac events and death in b-TM patients on DFO monotherapy.

Design And Setting: Prospective, observational, 10-year follow-up of patients attending Ain Shams Thalassemia Unit, Cairo, Egypt.

Background: Corticosteroids are mainstay of dermatological therapy and they are also a well known cause of osteoporosis. The objective of the present study was to find out the influence of the systemic intake of corticosteroids, either by the oral route or by IV pulse administration, on bone mineral density in dermatological patients using dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA).

Materials And Methods: This study was carried on 100 patients and 55 controls.

Background: The most serious side effects of systemic steroids include osteoporosis and suprarenal suppression. Many steroid regimens have been suggested to minimize these side effects; one of them is oral steroid pulse therapy.

Objective: To compare the side effects of a daily oral steroid regimen versus a weekly oral steroid pulse regimen on bone mineral density and suprarenal suppression.

Purpose: To evaluate the agreement and diagnostic accuracy of Contrast enhanced magnetic resonance angiography (CE-MRA), Doppler ultrasound (DUS) and Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) in the assessment of carotid stenosis.

Methods: DUS, CE-MRA and DSA were performed in 56 patients included in the Carotide-angiographie par résonance magnétique-échographie-doppler-angioscanner (CARMEDAS) multicenter study with a carotid stenosis ≥ 50%. Three readers evaluated stenoses on CE-MRA and DSA (NASCET criteria).

Purpose: To determine whether a relationship exists between the tumor volume (TV) or relative choline content determined using magnetic resonance spectroscopy imaging (MRSI) at 3T and the clinical prognostic parameters for patients with localized prostate cancer (PCa).

Methods And Materials: A total of 72 men (mean age, 67.8 ± 6.

Retainer-medicine primary care practices, commonly referred to as "luxury" or "concierge" practices, provide enhanced services to patients beyond those available in traditional practices for a yearly retainer fee. Adoption of retainer practices has been largely absent in academic health centers (AHCs). Reasons for this trend stem primarily from ethical concerns, such as the potential for patient abandonment when physicians downsize from larger, traditional practices to smaller, retainer-medicine practices.

Klippel-Trenaunay-Weber syndrome (KTWS) is a rare syndrome in which patients harbor cutaneous hemangiomas, venous varicosities, and osseous-soft tissue hypertrophy of the affected limb. The clinical presentation of this syndrome is variable and the etiopathogenesis is presumably genetic in view of recent discoveries of RASA1 gene mutations in KTWS patients. Similarly, the KRIT1 gene is involved in pathogenesis of cavernous angiomas.

Article Synopsis
  • * Case-fatality rates were found to be 15.6% at 1 month and 16.8% at 6 months post-hospitalization, indicating a slight increase in rates over the decades studied.
  • * The results suggest that despite advancements in management, SAH remains a severe condition, with most deaths occurring within the first 30 days after diagnosis.

Background: It is unknown whether defining chronic kidney disease (CKD) based on one versus two estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) assessments changes the prognostic importance of reduced eGFR in a community-based population.

Methods: Participants in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study and the Cardiovascular Health Study were classified into 4 groups based on two eGFR assessments separated by 35.3 +/- 2.

Article Synopsis
  • A 46-month-old child exhibited developmental delays and unique physical characteristics, including micropenis and facial dysmorphism, along with multiple cysts in the corpus callosum.
  • Genetic testing revealed a new (de novo) microdeletion in the 15q24.1q24.2 region of the child's chromosomes.
  • The presence of these cystic lesions is rare in pediatric cases, suggesting a possible link to the identified genetic abnormality, and emphasizes the importance of checking for chromosomal issues when such brain lesions are found.

In this study, the authors proposed a classification of inflammatory breast disorders based on which a practical systematic scheme in diagnosis was applied aiming to differentiate simple forms of mastitis from more complicated and malignant forms. The study population included 197 female patients who were clinically or pathologically diagnosed as having mastitis. All patients underwent Ultrasound examination.

The purpose of this study was to validate a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique for mapping liver fat, using (1)H magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((1)H-MRS) as the reference standard. In 91 patients with type 2 diabetes, 3.0-T single-voxel point-resolved (1)H-MRS was used to calculate the liver fat fraction (LFF) from the water (4.

Nasopharyngeal cysts.

Int J Pediatr Otorhinolaryngol

August 2009

Introduction: Nasopharyngeal cysts are uncommon, and are mostly asymptomatic. However, these lesions are infrequently found during routine endoscopies and imaging studies. In even more rare cases, they may be the source for unexplained sinonasal symptoms, such as CSF rhinorrhea, visual disturbances and nasal obstruction.

Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is strongly associated with age, and epidemiologic studies are needed to evaluate the impact of both aging of the population and the use of anticoagulant therapy in patients with AF on the incidence of cardioembolic stroke with AF (CE/AF stroke).

Methods: We evaluated trends in incidence rates, risk factors, prestroke therapy, and survival in CE/AF stroke from a prospective population-based registry, from 1985 to 2006.

Results: A total of 3,064 ischemic strokes, including 572 (18.

Unlabelled: The global health community faces a challenge with breast cancer being the most common cause of cancer related death among women around the globe. Since breast cancer's pathogenesis is poorly understood, primary prevention is still a distant goal. Thus secondary prevention through early detection is the only feasible approach at present.

Our objective was to investigate the influence of hypertension on N-acetylaspartate (NAA) and choline (Cho) ratios in brain tissues in a community-dwelling elderly population. Brain flexibility was also evaluated with regard to the same metabolite ratios. Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) and the Trail Making Test (TMT) were performed in 80 subjects (75.

Although previous studies have found that cerebral white matter hyperintensities are associated with balance-gait disorders, no proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy data at the plane of the basal ganglia have been published. We investigated a possible relationship between balance performance and brain metabolite ratios or structural MRI measurements. We also included neuropsychological tests to determine whether such tests are related to structural or metabolic findings.
