Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to enhance healthcare practices, including periodontology, by improving diagnostics, treatment planning and patient care. This study introduces 'PerioGPT', a specialized AI model designed to provide up-to-date periodontal knowledge using GPT-4o and a novel retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) system.
Methods: PerioGPT was evaluated in two phases.
The motivating premise of this study is to improve the treatment of periodontal disease by elucidating sex-specific mechanisms of periodontal disease progression. Men and women experience inflammation in fundamentally different ways and understanding the sex-specific biology leading to inflammation and bone loss in the periodontium will inevitably improve patient outcomes. Materials And Methods: Mandibular, chronic, standardized, bilateral, and vertical defects in 12 beagle dogs were evaluated using four modalities: a xenograft alone (XENO; n = 6); rhBMP-2 alone (BMP; n = 6); a technique with rhBMP-2 close to the host bone covered by xenograft (SAN; n = 6); and a technique with rhBMP-2 close to the flap on top of the xenograft (LAS; n = 6). After 8 weeks, a series of in vivo inspections, fluorescence microscopy, histologic and histomorphometric evaluations, and micro-CT analyses.
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder and presents with challenges in social communication. A hypothesized underlying contributing mechanism is the imbalance in excitation and inhibition (E/I), partly influenced by the levels of excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate (Glu) and inhibitory neurotransmitter γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the brain. Data for this observational retrospective study were collected from dental charts of patients who had received periodontal therapy and at least annual follow-up visits for >10 years were analyzed by linear regression generalized estimating equations and generalized linear models. Among 399 adults (199 males, 200 females), those with the least mean annual treatment cost experienced the greatest mean annual costs for extraction/replacement, indicating general cost-effectiveness.

Materials And Methods: The MMPPI scores were computed at baseline by summarizing scores allocated for individual factors. The cohort was treated, followed up, and placed under regular periodontal maintenance.
Regenerative periodontal therapy aims to form new cementum, periodontal ligament, and alveolar bone, all sealed by gingival tissue. The root surface acts as the wound margin during this regeneration process. Root surface biomodification (root conditioning/root decontamination), therefore, seems instrumental in promoting surface decontamination and enhancing tissue attachment by removing the smear layer, exposing collagen fibrils, and facilitating blood clot formation and stabilization.

Despite the various treatments proposed with barrier membranes, one of the main challenges for guided bone regeneration (GBR) is maintaining space for large defects and ensuring an adequate blood supply. The presented feasibility case series aims to introduce an original titanium frame (TF) design, customized for each defect, as a modification of well-known principles and materials for GBR to achieve an enhanced and more predictable horizontal and vertical bone augmentation. Three patients with significant horizontal defects were treated with pre-trimmed TFs to create needed space, and then a 50/50 mixture of autograft and bovine xenograft was placed and covered with a collagen membrane.

Background: Non-perforated Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membranes are effectively utilized in guided bone regeneration (GBR) but may hinder cell migration due to limited interaction with the periosteum. This study compared bone regeneration using occlusive or perforated membranes combined with acellular collagen sponge (ACS) and recombinant human bone morphogenic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) in a canine mandibular model.
